Yeah, me neither, but here I was staying in my first youth hostel in I won't tell you how many years. Why? Well, it was part of a two-day tour package I bought through Galway Tours, and I assume to bring the cost down, they put people up in this place since it's right next to the Galway coach station where I was supposed to pick up the bus the following morning to Connemara. I have to admit I didn't pay attention to that detail in the online description and probably thought that it wasn't a big deal to stay in a hostel for one night. Well, it wasn't all that big a deal, but I have to tell you that the sight of six bunk beds in a small room (see photo) reminded me of the Dachau concentration camp tour I took years ago. I looked into the bathroom (granted a luxury since I assume most of the rooms have shared facilities) and saw that the shower stall had no real drainage, and there was little room to put any toiletries on the sink's ledge. I actually let myself think that perhaps I would have the room to myself until I noticed a huge backpack hidden under one of the bottom bunks. Then a young couple, a New York girl with her Peruvian boyfriend, came in to take another set of beds. OK, the adventure begins, and of course, I started to feel self-conscious about my age because I was surely the oldest lodger in that hostel that night. As it turned out, everyone was cool, and nobody snored. Thank heaven for small favors. But I just felt weird being in what felt like a crowded dorm room like I was spending spring break in Fort Lauderdale with Connie Francis and George Hamilton. I wasn't feeling my vibe here, and frankly it was much worse downstairs in the common area where the more rambunctious youth were making a racket until the wee hours. It was like a United Nations General Assembly meeting crossed with a slumber party. The following morning, when I tried to have a slice of toast, a young African girl looked at me and laughed in my face like a hyena. Gee, thanks for making me feel like an outcast. But I really can't complain much since the rate for a bed here is about $25 US. By the way, the young staff at the desk are quite nice, the other guests not so much.

If you enjoy such things, that's great. But even for guests such as myself who have never so much as picked up a golf club, there is still plenty to enjoy on these grounds. For example, I was amazed to see the original train cars from the classic film "Murder on the Orient Express" parked on a terrace nearby. It felt as though I had been immersed in my favorite scenes from that movie. (I can't wait to show the photos to my film buff friends back home!) It's difficult to convey the beauty of the fields and hills that surround the Abbey. They are dotted with tastefully manicured gardens and greens that stretch on for acres. My stay lasted only for one night, but I could have happily explored the property for a week. The guest rooms themselves exude five-star luxury. The bathroom in my two-queen room was especially spacious and thoughtfully appointed. Happily, I was just steps away from the Abbey's restaurant. It stays open late to offer scrumptious desserts for a nightcap. It opens again in the morning for a pleasant breakfast offering. (Breakfast was included for my booking.) I especially enjoyed the impressive tea selection there. In closing, I'm grateful to have stayed at this memorable and historic hotel. This is why people love the Irish countryside; its breathtaking landscapes offer such great serenity. I'm not sure when (or if) I'll have the opportunity to visit Ireland again, but choosing Glenlo Abbey for my brief stay was a fortunate decision.

I was early so I didn't expect my room to be ready, but I was hoping that it was because I had a very important 2:00 business call. They told me that I could take it in their waiting areas, but there were other people there waiting for their rooms, so ultimately I had to take the call outside in a slight drizzle. Before the call, I checked back in at reception one more time to see if it was ready and said that I was concerned that they wouldn't be able to contact me because I had an international number and they assured me that they would be able to or they would come find me. Neither one of those things happened and my room was sitting ready and no one told me. After I checked in and before my call, I had lunch at Palmers. It felt like they were a little short staffed. I was in a hurry and saw the other server getting to tables that came in later than I did before me. The food was good though. I went back one more time and sat in the bar area and that was a better experience. I had a nice plate of chocolates waiting for me in the room which I appreciated. My room was nice with a beautiful view. The grounds are gorgeous and nice to walk around. I also had a very good experience at the spa. They had a piano player the nights I was there, which was so nice to sit and listen to. The breakfast was very good and what I would say is probably a traditional European hotel breakfast. They had a buffet and then you could order hot items. I wanted a mimosa one day, but it was €26 which is ridiculous for a mimosa! I also did the falconry, but couldn't find a price for it anywhere. It ended up being €85 and was a cool experience. I had dinner at the Pullman and it was delicious with great service. What a cool space it is and excellent presentation. It did annoy me that I spent so much on the food and wine pairing and they still charged me €8 for water! I never got an option for tap and they just gave me the bottle. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend it.

We had all the amenities we needed between the drawer and closet space and excellent shower pressure from the bathroom. Everyone that worked there was very accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning, which included gluten-free options. We also grabbed dinner at the restaurant there on the first night. There's also another restaurant and bar there, which we enjoyed drinks. Given we had rented a car to drive to Galway, we had easy parking space options with no issues getting around to head over to Galway City Centre and the surrounding areas.

You MUST follow the written directions that the hotel will email you - or the GOS navigation will fail you (it failed us when we used it to return from a day trip !). I'll include that written direction below. The staff of the hotel are extremely friendly! Early in the morning, I really wanted better coffee than the instant coffee in the room. The reception worker gladly allowed me into the restaurant do use the instant espresso machine to make myself a good coffee... That's just one example of the kind of generous, kind staff there is at the hotel. The room is spacious, even with a king size bed. There is actually enough room in this bedroom to do a plyometric workout. That's important, since there is no fitness room in this hotel. The bathroom is also spacious and has a nice bathtub with the shower. The hotel is quiet, and the bed is very comfortable. The restaurant in the hotel is surprisingly excellent! You might not think that a smaller hotel restaurant would be so good, but the food was very flavorful and fresh! The local flavors were evident, and the locally caught Seabass fish was excellent and fresh! This is a great place to stay to explore Galway, the cliffs of Moher and the Burren! I can't say anything about the public transport or buses in relation to the hotel, as we rented a car to come here. By the way, if you are an American considering renting a car at Dublin to drive in Ireland, I would say, go for it! I had to learn to drive stick shift with the left hand, and on the left side of the road... The first 15 minutes leaving Dublin were a little hectic, but after that you get the hang of it pretty easily! The roads are as narrow and sketchy as they say in the blogs... One local driver zipped past me so fast on the narrow road that our side mirrors next to one another! So, I do recommend the extra insurance...! Anyway, Menlo Park hotel is a great place to stay very comfortable, accommodating, and has a great friendly staff! Friendliness of the staff really adds so much to the value of the place... The simple fact that they let me make my own coffee in the restaurant in the morning made me feel like I was staying in my own house or a friends house... The lobby has lots of comfy chairs and couches to sit and enjoy that early morning coffee while my spouse could stay asleep in the room. Additionally, the hotel has a laundry service. 420 pounds per load, we dropped off our laundry in the morning and picked it up clean and folded in the evening. That is such a great value added to our stay as well! Again- i have enjoyed my stay at the Menlo Park Hotel very much - and i recommend it to you!
