And a standard pizza for myself. My pizza was soggy but ok, but my wife's was completely uncooked. The vegan cheese was unmelted, the vege was raw, and everything just fell off the uncripsed base. I went to take it back and the girl serving at the front took us down back by the kitchen. Clearly the young curly haired guy managing didn't want complaints observed by others eating there. I said "sorry but this isn't good enough this pizza isn't properly cooked" his answer was "you should have asked for it well-done" (like it's a steak). I picked up a piece and said "would you eat this?" at which point all the toppings fell off. Then he said " now you've ruined it, I can't put it back in the oven now". This seemed to have become a bit of Little Britain/Monty Python moment. I said "enough of this ridiculousness I want my money back. To which he stated "I can't give you a refund, you to apply for a refund by email and it will take 3 days" I stormed out furious and my wife had no pizza. My wife went back to complain also and the guy said that I should have been more respectful if I wanted good service. I have almost infinite patience for people working in service - they work very hard, but this guy had such an entitled attitude I couldn't believe it. All he had to say was "I'm sorry, we'll sort it" and I would have said thank you and probably left a tip. If there is a problem with under cooked pizza then cook it more or make a new one (no arguments). If there is a problem with the vegan toppings sourced and they wont cook properly then do your best to sort it and if they won't cook properly then give a refund. In saying that we have ordered the same pizza from other Franco Manca's regularly without issue, so I must assume that it was this guy being a prize... Really? "you should have asked for it well done" for a pizza order. Who goes into a pizza restaurant and says "I would like my pizza well done please" It's hilarious, only if it wasn't true. He also suggested coming here for dinner which I decided to take him up on that even though where Franco Manca is located has a lot of very interesting food venues which reminds me of Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. The staff was helpful and sat me immediately. I ordered a glass of wine which was just okay. I'm not really knowledgable about wines so I guess my way through it and this one wasn't as good as others I've had. I ordered one of the more basic pies as I feel that should really be the tell-tale sign of a good pizza. The crust and dough of this pizza was truly excellent as was the cheese. The sauce lacked a bit of flavor and freshness. It wasn't a bad sauce, but I like when there's a fresh and very strong tomato taste which I didn't get eating this. After eating a full pizza, I didn't look to get a dessert and didn't even check to see if they had one. Overall, a decent pie to eat in a very peculiar area! When I arrived back to South Kensington, I noticed there was a location of Franco Manca a block away! Oh well. It was better to see a different area of London.

Franco Manca blew away my terribly low expectations and managed to rank up there with some of the better pizza I've ever enjoyed. A few basics, first. Lovely restaurant, much larger than it appears, good for groups in the back. The streamlined menu and seasonal specials amount to the selection of your average food truck: pizza, salads and sides, with great options for vegans/vegetarians, but you're here for pizza, that's your mission. Naturally, the beer/wine menu is simple as well, I enjoyed the Montepulciano. The crust on these sourdough pies are worthy of big smiles, soft and stretchy, a Neapolitan consistency. And because I could, I did: Described by our server as the "carb monster", I ordered the #3, simply because I really wanted to experience a pizza loaded with stilton cheese, potatoes and lamb sausage. And no, it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad, and it completely wiped away a terrible memory, 20 years back, of Manchester.

The crust was so flavorful and chewy, and the sauce was delicious. We added buffalo mozzarella to the Margherita, which IMO is the only way to go. We also tried the eggplant parm pizza, and this may just be the very best thing I've ever eaten! Note that you need to use a fork and knife for the middle, which is how Neapolitan pizza is in Naples. They also have a vegan section! I would definitely try a marinara or other vegetarian options. We didn't have room for dessert, but the tiramisu looked amazing and the other dishes like gianduja filled brioche sounded delicious!
