Using a wood-fired stove, Pizzeria da Filippo Pisa does a very good, steady business of providing good Italian pies to tourists and locals alike.
It is located very, very close to the Pisa train station, and would be a good stop for passengers. We were staying for a couple of days, and it was very close to our hotel, so we walked over on our first night in Pisa. It was very busy with pickups and deliveries, but we were able to get the waitress' attention to get seated in a table for two in the front.
We had decided we were going to split a pizza and pasta dish, and kept it pretty simple. The house vino was available so went with their red, half a bottle (5€). Also got a bottled water (1,5€). The spinach and sausage pizza (8€) used ground sausage pieces with canned, wringed out spinach, and fresh mozzarella ...neither expected that way, but tasted good never the less. The crust was solid, and had been baked in a wood burning oven. The funny thing is that they were using a metal round pan to bake the pizza....eliminating the char on the crust completely. The pizzaiolo was very busy, constantly taking out pizzas left and right. We got ours in a very reasonable timeframe...the restaurant really is able to handle a large volume.
My wife got the tagliatelle ragu (10€), a small portion of fresh pasta mixed with a non-spicy meat sauce. It was good, reminding us of how much better fresh pasta is.
It was loud and hectic inside, but everyone was enjoying it. They do accept credit cards, you just have to pay for it up front in the register. This place demonstrated to us of how much more affordable pizza and pasta is here, vs where we are from. read more
