A measuring technician came out, took all the dimensions, and directed us to the 1020 W. San Carlos location to review their full carpet selection. At the store, we explained what we were looking for, compared carpet features and pricing, and worked with Dominic--who was very accommodating. His total project cost was competitive with the other quotes we received. We also wanted new baseboards that would match our freshly painted walls and trim. Dominic arranged to have the primed (but unpainted) 16' wood baseboards delivered ahead of installation, giving us time to paint everything before the carpet went in. Tip Our new carpet and pad are very soft and plush--great underfoot, especially on the stairs. Because the new flooring sits higher than the original laminate, our bedroom doors needed to be trimmed by about half an inch. We cut the doors ourselves, but it's worth asking whether your installer can include that as part of the project. Pros * Dominic is a true carpeting professional--he anticipated our needs and offered thoughtful guidance throughout the process. * Both the wood and carpet installation teams did solid, quality work. It's when the installers showed up that things went south. Carpeteria's operation manager gave his installers three days to do a job I thought should take two, maybe less, based on the couple hundred or so floor covering jobs I scheduled when I sold and managed real estate. But I figured that was Carpeteria's problem, not mine. I figured wrong. At around 8:30 PM the first day of the installation I get an email from my neighbor, who shares a common wall, complaining that the installers are still there and that she needs them gone by 11:00 PM. I'm staying off-site, which means that I have to drive a half hour at night to see if the installers are still in my house. They are. I tell them my neighbor is complaining and that they have to leave. The foreman tells me that Carpeteria gave them only one day to do the job, and that they'll have to work all night. I tell him that Carpeteria gave them three days and they have to go. This gets me lots of attitude. When I don't back down, he calls someone--probably not Gary, Carpeteria's operations manager, unless Gary takes calls at 10:00 at night and he's fluent in Spanish--who gives him the okay to pull off the job. We agree that they can come back the next day to rehang the doors. They leave reluctantly and noisily. One of them walks past me with an armful of his tools and one of my power strips. I point out that the power strip is mine, not his, and he puts it down. They finally pull away at 10:30 PM. A few days later I move back in and find a two-inch crack in one of my shoji screens and a three-inch crack in the facing screen--apparently someone played bumper cars with them. Maybe the guy who rehung them? I complain to Carpeteria. Gary suggests that he meet me at the house with the installers "so they can see the screens". Then what? The installers say "no, boss, the screens were like that when we got here", and we all hold hands and sing Kumbaya? As to why the installers were hellbent on finishing in one day a job they'd been given three days (and a Carpeteria van) to do, I'll leave that to your imagination.
