Always a must stop shop. This place has something for everyone, even our pup found a friend. I saw a Hallmark ornament Peter Pan Mickey Mouse that I really wanted and couldn't find one. The staff was very helpful and willing to sell the floor model and even had the box for it. I was so happy and not able to find prior. The prices here are competitive and you can find hard to find items here. Can't want to come back again. read more

What a great little store in the heart of old town Placerville! It's right by the parking garage and the tower. They are not usually open on Tuesdays but I got lucky and they were open on this Tuesday. Park in the garage - two hours free! There is a Hallmark store in the back with all the good Hallmark things: Cards, wrap, mugs, bows, ornaments, etc. They have the cutest plushies toys for the kids. They have art supplies!! (Good art supplies) and a great selection of sodas and candy. It's a really fun store and I got some cute things for gifts here. Can't wait to come back again. read more

Was at Placerville News Company for dinner with my daughter, SNL and granddaughter last summer. Food and service were awesome.

My daughter who is 14 went in there today, she was accused of stealing because she looks like those who have before. My daughter who for the first time was allowed to go walking through town with her best friend to spend money at local shops. The lady who accused her looked through her bag, and made her feel horrible. I don't think the lady knew my daughter was a high functioning autistic, has never stole anything in her life, and was very hurt that this lady said teenagers steal all the time here, and then targeted my daughter. My daughter didn't have an adult supervising as we normally do, but we trusted her enough to be free to walk around without us and shop. I seriously am concerned that any kid can get harassed because a worker thinks they might have stole something because of the way they look, dress, or they are young. She said sorry, but my daughter feels totally Embarrassed on a day that was supposed to be fun, a day that was her first time being away from her parents and trying to be independent and mature. I will be calling them to let them know how inexcusable their actions were. read more

It's impossible that over 15 months into the worst pandemic in modern world history, there are still businesses that refused to enforce the covid-19 safety measures. employees in the store are wearing masks. But that's not good enough. They must enforce that customers wear masks too. read more

When I think of gifts, or rather the starting point for shopping for gifts in downtown Placerville, I think of Placerville News. It is conveniently located very near to the downtown public parking lot. PVN has toys, books, small gifts, a nice art section, stocks cool Xmas ornaments during the holidays, and is perhaps the only place in Placerville to carve out a nook in their massive magazine section for: the porno mags (or, as I like to refer to them in these trying times, blackout provisions... and they don't bat an eye when you buy Taboo and Over 50; like a boss). Oh, and they sell Zig Zags, c'mon now. My only minor issue is prices on some items are a little high (so comparison shop if you have the time), but they do carry a bit of most things, which makes them a convenient one stop shop when you're in a pinch and in need of a gift. I'll admit, they hold their own, even with heavy competition within close proximity. They are worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

One of the oldest original businesses in Placerville; family-owned and operated. Love this place for its displays and decor and sheer variety of products; great books on local history like the Gold Rush, and some nice books on California getaways. Used to have a wonderful Fenton glass collection; they have art supplies, greeting cards, great selection of candy. Their popcorn is to die for, always get a bag when I am in there. Great magazine selection. Lots of quaint little knick knacks. Feels good to support one of a kind, local businesses like this one!! read more

The customer service here was quick and ever so friendly. I was looking at a few metal toys behind a counter and I was greeted quickly and with a smile. The gentleman was very Freud Luna during answered all my questions. He boxed up the one I wanted and held it for me until we were done shopping. So many neat items here. I will be back. My little sisters were yelled at for "stealing" and the lady even chased them out of the store and scolded them, until realizing they did not steal anything.which of course they did not, they are only 10. They were looking and playing with puppets and they were yelled at for doing that too. They also were lookin through drawing books and were accused with drawing in them. (All of the pages had already been drawn on). These girls are polite well maintained girls and it was very disrespectful. So keep in mind if your kids go into the store and they even look at a toy they will be yelled at. read more

Everything was going well until I got to the cashier's desk to checkout. There was only one lady before me when I was in line, and as the store was not packed at all I am sure that the elder cashier lady knew I was next. Within seconds another customer on the opposite side of me -- just as I was about to check out just blurted out that she needed something from the window, now, instead of the cashier saying something like, -how about I take care of you after I ring up this young lady that was before you-, she instead said to her, "Oh, okay, let me get that for you...and just looked at me quickly and said, 'I'll be right with you...and walked away to help the other lady that conveniently cut herself in line. Also wanted to point out that just as I was checking out, she had the vibe that she didn't want to even help me to begin with. With this in mind, another elder lady came up to the cashier's desk and rang me up. This was very disappointing and wrong in so many levels. I would like to believe that we have passed the stage of discrimination, but when something like this happens, I beg to differ. Charming, cute, quaint, home-town appeal. Family run and they are very nice folks. Books and magazines are not cheap anywhere nowadays, but the prices here are fair and reasonable. I like to drop in whenever I'm down strolling Main Street, the Hardware Store gets all of the attention (probably rightfully so), but this is a neat little gem of a local shop too. read more

I love this little shop. They always have the odd item that I can't find at the big store, either in stock or they know where they can order it for me. Every time I walk in I am always politely greeted with a smile and a "how are you today". The store is Family owned and operated by at least one family member at all times. My tale starts November 2013. It involves an 8 dollar topographic map, tax, and shipping since I'm out of town. I was greatful they had a wide variety of topo maps and was buying a quad of maps for the Folsom area. They had 3 of the 4. Well after discussing with the manat the counter (I think he was the owner after the woman requested he come over) helping me. I decide I wanted the map I paid up front at my own doing because I didn't know when I would be back and he said "I'm ordering after the 1st of the year and should have it to you no later than February. Well it came and went. I called and was told not ordered yet. (I really don't recall the month). Left message, no response. So July 2014 I was in Placerville. The woman at the counter said she does't understand why it wasn't ordered but will let the man know (I think) and would leave him a message to call me. No call. I was there in November 2014 at thanksgiving a year later. No the man was at lunch again verified my order for a map was in their little book (they had several) took a message for the guy to call me again. So Ive patiently waited giving opportunity to remedy a $13ish purchase with no avail. I'm letting you know if you don't see the item you want don't expect it to be ordered. He can keep my $. Otherwise, I do admit I like going into the store when I'm in Placerville and will again. read more
