During a month-long work trip to Cambridge we indulged in Boston's superb culinary scene. Because our caloric intake upticked it was essential to find a gym for us to work off all those extra drinks and desserts. The nearest gym to our temporary residence was the Planet Fitness in Waltham and we could not have been more pleased. We want to thank the manager, Chan, and his staff for making us feel welcome and accomodating us for a short period membership. The Planet Fitness offers a full suite of both cardio and strength equipment that addresses all of workout requirements. And there is ample duplication to enable a large number of patrons to burn off excess calories, stress, and energy. This gym is well maintained and the staff was noticeably making rounds to ensure proper functioning and cleanliness. When repairs to equipment were needed it was usually accomplished within 24 hours. The gym hours are great and meshed nicely with our hectic schedule. Weekday hours are from 5:00 am until 10:00 pm which ensured we could get in a daily workout. The patrons here are very friendly and and we enjoyed the social dimensions of being in the gym. We also noted that everyone is meticulous about cleaning the equipment after completing a set. Great facility with a wide variety of equipment and an attentive staff and genial patrons made for an exceptional experience. They brought in technicians since my last review to perform maintenance on the machines, I witnessed this with my own eyes. However, the drinking fountain upstairs has been out of order for months without any end in sight and now the downstairs fountain is out of order, with little chance that will be repaired sooner. No functional drinking fountain is unforgivable. This is a high traffic gym between Waltham and Cambridge with lots of people stopping off before work and we need water. Photos attached. read more

Once or twice a week, I have to come to this location because it's less than five minutes from my house and I have to take care and be close to my home because my mother and this is how the bathroom always looks. It's disgusting. It's never cleaned anymore. the showers are the same way there's trash there's mold growing. It smells awful. I would tell anyone if they can avoid it. Please do not come here. If there was a way to rate this facility any less, I will probably give them a zero. I am eight months pregnant. Unfortunately for me, I am not mobile. I had my husband drop me off at this facility with the plan to walk home myself. After my workout, I came home after an over 30mins walk only to realise I had forgotten my earphone case at this facility. I had already maxed out on energy and couldn't go back to check for it at the time. I quickly put a call across to customer service at the gym calmly requesting them to secure it if they somehow saw it. The first lady who spoke to me was sweet and reassuring. After sometime, I called to see if there was any news of it. A guy answered this time, he began by telling me how ridiculous it was of me to ask them to search for my item. If I couldn't walk down to come search it myself then I shouldnt bother them coz it was non of their business. If I had nothing more reasonable to say he was going to hang up coz the call, "according to him" has taken quite long. He was so rude to me. I felt embarrassed and regretted registering with them. My review of 7/14/24 says it all. This place remains amazingly consistent. I returned recently after an absence and it was as if I never left.. The equipment is old and outdated. The TV monitors are either down of showing advertisements. The men's locker/bathroom is filthy and smells like one of the bathrooms in the old boston garden. Might be one of the absolute worst planet fitnesses around. Last time I was there about 5 treadmills were out of order. The locker room is filthy and always smells horribly and like mold. The best thing about planet fitness in Waltham is that Dina is always there and on time. Billy is very nice as well! I am always seeing Dina cleaning. She is such a joy to have considering we have had some unreliable and impolite people before but I find her people skills the best! If you can please make it cooler in there as now that its getting warmer, it still is very uncomfortable while working out. Who won the TV? It would have been nice had you actually had Dina pick the name out of the hat and uploaded it to your site..so we could see it was not "in the bag".... as some tend to think that was rigged. read more

Honestly say it's the worst gym i've ever been to. As soon as you walk in there is just a foul smell you are hit with and overall the cleanliness is below a one star. The gym has what you need but the vibe of the place really just ruins it. Stains all over the walls, paint chipping, no music, and broken machines. Absolutely do not recommend. read more

If you need a treadmill or elliptical, or maybe this is the gym for you. If you want most anything else, every Planet Fitness I've gone to, in MA and other states, is a better version than this one. Equipment was in pretty rough shape most of 2023. These are old machines. Many machines didn't work and were slow to be repaired, padding on machines is (still in 2024) worn through, etc. Most machines were returned to working order before January (membership rush) season but has quickly fallen back into disrepair. Employees have revealed that there is one mechanic who services all the gyms (in Boston area?) and they must wait their turn for a visit that rarely seems to keep these machines in functioning order for long. Repairs often take 3+ weeks (yes I've tracked it because I'm frustrated and want to use the machines). There are waits for cable machines, smith machines, stair masters (if functioning) at most times of day. I've tried coming in off peak hours and it doesn't help. Management says there is no likelihood of removing the unused row of treadmills (seriously there are so many treadmills and ellipticals sitting unused) and replacing with some of the more popular equipment. Cleanliness is also an issue, but for $10/month, most PF goers overlook this. On the plus side: parking is okay. Maybe this gym was once good. It is overdue for an overhaul. read more

Can someone with money please buy this gym. Ideally an investor or a PF financially stable owner needs to acquire this gym since it's strategically positioned in a favorable location. While the gym boasts potential, there is major room for improvement, particularly in upgrading old outdated equipment and addressing the suboptimal condition of the locker rooms, reminiscent of a prison-style open concept. Regrettably, the current independent owner appears unmotivated to enhance or invest in the facilities despite collecting monthly membership fees. This place is great ! I signed up in September of 2020 and was amazed at the size of this place. I'm not big on machines (probably cause of other gyms lack of them) but here they have so many in duplicate that target different workouts....and you never really have to wait either. But by far the biggest plus about here....is Sandy , and how she and her staff keep this place so clean in the gym areas. And especially clean in the lockerroom. This Planet Fitness is good. You need to know what to expect. It's an entry level gym for which you pay $10/month. It's designed for accessibility for those just starting out. So you're not going to get a lot of amenities. But there are plenty of cardio machines and weight machines. If you want to lose weight or get strong there are plenty of ways to do that here but you're not gonna feel fancy about it. If you want a sauna or a pool or dietary help or oddly specific machines, go elsewhere. The only real basics a PF lacks for are your free standing racks and cages where you can load as many plates as you want. Kind of a bummer, but I can see how it does comport with the ethos of "no lunk" zone. The place is new, too. In the last several months they've replaced most (if not all) their equipment. Very rarely is any equipment out of order. The space is a good size. There is a stretching room upstairs with stability balls, mats, a stretching cage, some light weight dumbbells and plates, as well as the ab workout area. The second floor also has a handful of upright and recumbent bikes. Downstairs they have their 30-minute circuit area, which almost no one ever uses properly, but the principle of being able to get a quick whole body workout in in 30-minutes is nice. Again, it's not for the advanced gym goer but for those getting accustomed to being active every day and trying to figure out what the heck to do when they get to a gym it's great. They have three rows of treadmills and some stair masters, plenty of upright and recumbent bikes, rowing machines, and ellipticals. The weight room has half a dozen benches and smith machines, two sets of dumbbells from 5lbs to ~90lbs. They have two of each type of machine which helps to prevent crowding as well as four multi use machines that combine things like rows, seated lat pull downs, and adjustable pulleys. They also have a giant new jungle gym of a cage that has pulleys, an adjustable step for box jumps, pull up bars, battle ropes, etc. The women's rest/locker room and showers are older but clean and functional. The staff are friendly and I've never seen any of the militant kind of PF rule enforcement that has happened at other gyms (e.g. nit picky dress code violations, bothering people for not being completely silent during work outs, etc.). The patrons are mostly nice and considerate. Parking is easy. read more

You can't appreciate a new PF until you have to deal with an old one and unfortunately this is an old Planet Fitness that needs some renovations. Pros- PF is a great gym and strong bang for your buck. I used to pay the $10/month but since my new job has me in 2 locations- the black card allows me to work out at multiple PF's [before leaving the gym I make sure to plan for the 10minute hydro massage (body massage in a bed while playing solitaire or other games on the provided tablet machine) which is a perk of black card that makes a strong incentive to join the black card program.] Cons- To begin, the Waltham men's shower room is still a open floor plan - it's 2018 get real!- there is enough wall spacing to add some stalls for at least 4 privacy solo showers. I was baffled when I found out that only some Pf's have a stretching cage (when you see it, you will want it before and after every workout). That being said, this location is still in need of a stretching cage While the hydromassage is a pro benefit of joining black card, the machines at Waltham are a bit outdated and lay downs when the newer hydromassages act as a better recliner in couch like position. There is no ambiance music playing in the background at this location which is weird because at the other new location I go to, you can't help but here the different background music and ads playing within the workout spaces and even in the locker rooms. Final thoughts: For being metro-Boston I would hope that this location would close for a week and bang out some much needed renovations for all club members. From a new PF to this one, I specifically made it a point to come to Yelp to post this review in hopes of making somewhat of a difference. Luckily I can still deal with the amenities for the week at this location and use the newer PF on the weekends. I don't shower at Waltham Pf but I do at other one. Go PF! Progress is now. read more

The other has forty bulbs . With more than forty completely not functioning. Another words useless. Reported since I am member. Answer " working on it " . Absolutely nothing done . Watertown location everything seems to work. Throwing a bone or the finger to people in Waltham. Waltham location has potential seeming to be unfinished. And higher ups could care less. This is the smallest PF I've visited. It was a one time visit using the Black card membership while staying with a freind in Waltham. Pretty average, not many tanning beds. Clean and well ventilated for the most part. I think the patrons are the most uncomfortable part of the place. EVERYONE is on their phone, or taking pics in the mirror in front of the weights.... not really against PF Policy but still... pretty eh. Plenty of parking and cardio machines. They set up nee 30 minute express machines in the front. Most weight machines have been moved to the far back. Waltham gym is standard with weight machines, cardio, and a stretch area. Generally clean which is great. Employees aren't the most friendly which is why I've docked down a star. Also had a situation where a guy was grunting while lifting weights, dropping them when done, and being all together annoying. Employee commented to another person that they "shouldn't be doing that" and then walked away. If your gym's motto is to get rid of those aggressive workouts, then maybe mention it? As far as Planet Fitnesses go, this particular branch is slightly below average. It has most of the equipment you need, there's plenty of space, high ceilings, and there's rarely a wait to use anything. The facilities themselves feel dated however, with a slightly unpleasant smell constantly in the air, bathrooms worse than my old high school's (communal showers?? Really??), and subpar machines. They don't even have cup holders on the machines like most PFs do. The staff is nice enough though. I'd recommend looking into another PF branch if you have the choice. read more

I have changed my review a couple times and finally decided this place deserves 1 star. I have been a member here well over a year. The management is nice and friendly and the price isn't ridiculous. Those are about the only positives. But when I am paying for a gym membership, I don't care as much about the price or the management, so long as they are decent. I care what equipment they have and what benefits I get from it. This gym is geared towards people who don't know anything about fitness or lifting and want a "fast food" version of getting in shape. In fact, a lot of gyms these days are geared that way. And in the process, gyms remove legitimate pieces of equipment that actually help you lose weight. In particular, this planet fitness removed their ONLY TWO squat racks and replaced them with assisted machines. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about lifting knows a REAL squat rack is completely essential. In fact you can get in shape with just a squat rack. When I asked why they removed the squat racks, and if they were coming back again, the manager said "no, they are outdated." That's like saying feet are outdated. P.S they serve free pizza here. I was a member at a Planet Fitness in NH that I LOVED!! It was super clean, super friendly staff, diverse crowd, cheap, etc. I moved to Boston September of 2010 and I had to transfer my membership. Because I work in Weston, the "most convenient" for me was the Waltham location, on my way home from work. I was very disappointed. The layout of this gym feels unnatural (why have the rows of cardio machines facing each other? i don't want to stare into this sweaty man's eyes for an hour) and the locker room came as a total shock. Tiny, dirty, old, whatever. Not impressed. The staff isn't very friendly. More than 50% of people in there are catty college girls giving you dirty looks who come in groups of 4 or 5, never leave each others' sides, stand around a machine a gossip - OR college boys in groups of 2 or 3 lifting weights and touching each others' muscles. It is totally annoying and in my opinion it is the opposite vibe that PF is meant to have. As you can imagine, I never wanted to go, so I didn't. I never tried to tanning as a black card member in this location, but I only saw booths, no beds, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. The massage chairs are right in the line of traffic of the front door. Instead I joined Healthworks. Way more expensive but a more motivational place. When I called to inquire about canceling my PF membership the girl on the phone was a complete moron. Conversation went as follows: Moron: Whats your last name? Me: _______ *spells it out for her* Moron: First name? Me: Kelley. Moron: I don't think you belong to this club. I can't find you. Me: *spells out my last name again* Moron: I only have a Kelley. This gym is only good because it's cheap. It PACKED ALL THE TIME. I work normal hours, so I prob get the brunt of the crowd. Ive gone at 530 in the morning and its still busy. The crowd is really young. There werent alot of pervy dudes, so i liked that. everyone cleans their machines. there are alot of crazy thin girls who are intimidating with their tight workout outfits and crazy preying mantis legs on the eliptical. we need more fatties at the gym to make me feel better about myself read more

It's crazy to think that people still tan in tanning beds. We all know better by now, yet Planet Fitness still has tanning beds for their hard-bodied gym goers. It's also crazy that they only charge you $10 a month to use their gym, when just down the road you can pay $60+ a month for a gym MINUS a tanning bed. I realized how expensive my previous gym was, and decided that my whopping five visits a month didn't justify the $58 monthly price tag. After realizing that it was jogging or Curves, I was stoked to hear my coworker talking about PF. Here's how she described it: "I don't like going to gyms where I feel like everyone is evaluating me. I also don't use anything but the cardio machines, so I don't care about weights and saunas and stuff like that. Plus it's only $10 a month." Hook, line, and sinker. Since then, five of us have signed up, made a pact to go EVERY WEEK TWICE DURING LUNCH, and so far, I've been once in the past month. So, although it's costing me virtually the same (per visit) as my last gym, I don't feel as bad when I don't go the other 30 days of the month. One day I will go, though. And when I do, I'll be able to choose from several different models of treadmills and ellipticals. I'll use their comfortably average women's room, sidestepping the tanning bed on the way in. I'll watch their preprogrammed televisions, and I'll drink their overpriced water. read more

How can you not be a fan of a gym that's 10 minutes away and costs $10 per month? I actually spring for the black card because I'm able to use other gyms in the area which came in handy when I traveled for work and still comes in handy so I can use a gym near my work during lunchtime. Here are the only reasons I can think of why PF isn't for you: 1. You would need to shower in the locker room regularly 2. You hate the colors purple and/or yellow 3. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. The reason- value for the money. I went with the more "expensive" option of $20/month. This allows me to bring some one with whenever I go, and use Planet Fitness in FL when I visit home.....and taneverycoupleofweekssoIdon'tgetpasty (said very quickly under her breath while blushing). Look, for $10-$20 per month you get a super clean gym with more cardio than you can ever use. All of the cardio machines are now new, and there is NEVER, I repeat, NEVER a wait for the cardio. The gym itself is fine, it had everything I needed, was kind of cleanish and was close to my office. 4 stars for that (im being a little generous there). Its fine while you are a member, but good luck ever quitting. After cancelling my membership in person over a month ago I'm still being billed and now have been told that I have to send a certified letter to quit since they have no record of it in "the system". How convieniant, I would love to take time out of my workday at my brand new job to pay to have a letter sent in to redo something I drove an hour round trip to accomplish in December. Its especially helpful that they were able to justify why they couldn't just process my RE-cancellation over the phone.
