I needed to schedule an appointment for STI testing relatively fast and I had a generally good experience here. They were running behind schedule, but otherwise the care team was so kind and really took a lot of nerves out of this office visit for me. They are very disrespectful! I have never felt so disrespected and disregarded from a doctors office in my life. They are always late on their appointments. Been here 3 times and they are never in time, but after my experience today, I will never go to a planned parenthood or support them again. They are very disrespectful and don't consider your time, and have no integrity. I feel like I can't trust them. They also don't like providing information when you asks questions and like to ask personal info right in front of everybody sitting in the lobby, and they can hear it. I arrived early for my 10am scheduled birth control appointment, only to wait 30 minutes in the lobby before they called to tell me that I can't get my appointment that day because I need a consultation, and they couldn't fit me in that same day. I booked the appointment, provided them my insurance only for them to tell me I can't get the birth control. Because I needed an additional appointment. Nobody bothered to call me to tell me and the appointment had been booked for 2 weeks. I asked if the consultation was covered by my insurance, and she said they only run insurance the day of the appointment when the patient is there. This place doesn't care about you or your time, and they wait to get you in the door just to give you last costs/ info on the costs. I feel scammed and will never come back. The also make you feel like you're just another number. The experience is never persona, if feels like you are one of the many and they want to hurry up and get you out. I only come to this location because it is near places in wicker I want to go after. I had an issue picking up birth control here recently and never want to go back. The last two times I have been here, they have brought up my financial status to obtain birth control. Literally talking about it in front of everyone is what I mean by that.. I can hear them behind the glass talking to each other about my status. It is super unprofessional to talk about anyone's financial status to pickup birth control. I am disappointed in Planned Parenthood. The last two times being here as a woman, I don't feel supported, my having rights to my privacy, not being courteous, I don't want to come back here. I have visit this Site before and after Covid and I would not recommend anyone go here!!! They take entirely too long! I literally waited an hour after my scheduled appointment for them just to check my vitals! Every time I visit their are long waits!!! The desk clerks are always on their phones and there is always only one doctor on site! I am going to take this opportunity to speak up for all of the Chicago women that are being ripped off! I needed to refill my birth control prescription ASAP and I really did not want to go to my usual gyno, so I made an appointment with the Wicker Park PP online. It was quick and easy. Since I always had to provide a Pap smear sample whenever I needed to refill my birth control at my usual gyno's office, I prepared my ho ha as needed--wax, scented lotions, all the good stuff. Everything needed to look presentable, right? WRONG! I did not wait long before I was called back into an exam room. The nurse practitioner asked me a bunch of medical questions, took my weight, blood pressure, temperature, and that was it!!!! She wrote the prescription on the spot. When I asked the practitioner why they did not need to perform a Pap smear, she informed me that a woman my age (26) should get a Pap smear done every 3 years! WHAT???!! You mean to tell me that I have been paying $350 a year for a test that I did not really need???!!! You have got to be kidding?! But wait....it gets better! As I began to check out with the woman up front, she asked me if I wanted to purchase my birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) there. I was happy to hear that I did not have to make the extra trip to Walgreens. However, my jaw hit the floor when the woman informed me that one pack was $33 and they were having a buy 3 get one free special. I was absolutely flabbergasted because not only did Walgreens refuse to give me more than one pack at a time, but they freaking charged me $140 for every single pack of 28 pills!!! Can you believe that?! How can Walgreens, and other big name pharmacies for that matter, cheat women like this? Women who take birth control are trying to prevent unwanted pregnancies and this is how businesses repay them? I left the PP facility with 4 packs of birth control pills that I purchased for $99. I couldn't even get one pack at Walgreens for that kind of money. How pathetic. It was then and there that I realized what a gem PP really is. They are a company that promotes women's health and women's rights. They are not just a place that women go to when they need an abortion- they offer so much more. I will always and forever support PP because they are one of the few companies out there that still looks out for us women. read more

Helpful, patient, and nice. I've never really had a bad experience at a PP and this one was no exception. I made an appointment to get my IUD done and since I have an HMO and my regular doctor works for a Catholic institution this is where my insurance sent me. No worries as mentioned I like PP and I was going to into the appointment very informed (I've been wanting this done for awhile.). They explained everything and took the time to clarify a couple of things for me and we were on to getting things done. Now let me tell you I do not have a strong tolerance for pain. Let's put it this way it "hurt" when they pricked my finger for the blood test. So ladies let me tell you this was quite possibly one of the most painful things I've done so far but so worth it. I went home with a pamphlet explaining things that could go wrong and what to look for and when I went to bed all things seemed good. Wrong! I woke up the next morning in hives. My hands were so swollen that when I made a fist you couldn't see my knuckles. I went to my regular doctor who put me on steroids to stop the swelling and then I called PP to find out if this was normal. They of course said no and like my regular doc they recommended I go see my dermo. I made an appointment and thank goodness I found out that the hives was actually from a medicine he had prescribed. The timing of the hives and the IUD was just a coincidence. It took about a month and half for all the hives to go away completely but at least I knew that I wasn't going to have to have the IUD taken out. Right around the time the hives were almost cleared up the nurse practitioner called me to find out how I was and if I had found out anything. She had done some more research and couldn't find anything about hives. I explained the problem to her and thanked her for her concern. She was of course happy to hear I was feeling better to. All of this just goes to show you that PP isn't the big bad wolf that some make it out to be. read more

I didn't realize the care I was receiving at a different Women's center was so inadequate until I came here. EXTREMELY lovely staff. Phenomenal experience. The monitor in the waiting room is great. Long story short: Planned Parenthood is apparently, officially now in the business of telling women what to do with their bodies. I am livid. Long story but still kinda long: I went to PP today to get a new birth control prescription. While I could explain the circumstances that led me here in detail (old doctor moved, new doctor bumped my appointment forward 6 weeks), they don't matter. Planned Parenthood advertises itsself as a place where women (and men) can receive thoughtful, judgement-free sexual health services regardless of circumstance or background. In any case, I waited nearly 2 hours before I met with a nurse practitioner (Michelle). She asked if I experienced migraines, and I do occasionally get migraines. And now as a woman of 36 years old, because I have both migraines and age, I apparently am REQUIRED to switch oral contraceptive medications because of an increased risk blood clots (a risk from 1 in 2000 for younger women to 2 in 2000 because I am one year older). Well, I like the progesterone in the OCP that I have been taking for over a decade. I like it because it controls my excruciating cramping and fainting every month. I started taking it specifically to treat my difficult periods, and now I am being told that I must return to my difficult periods and start using a foreign, unproven hormone. In actuality, I have been there and done that. More than 15 years ago. I tried the other ones and they didn't help. And to be honest, if Michelle had any bedside manner whatsoever I may have been convinced to try something new and unproven. But she instead sat there smirking. She seemed almost glad about dismissing all of my concerns as if I were a complete idiot who had no idea what she was talking about. She made no attempt whatsoever to understand why I would be upset that I was told - after a 2 hour wait, mind you - that I was not actually going to get what I came in there for. She kept robotically repeating that my former pill is no longer good for me and that my only choices were an on-the-spot depo provera shot or to get a progesterone only pill, end of story, because of slight statistical increase in risk. In the end I stormed out of there so angry I could spit nails. To be treated like an uninformed idiot; to be lectured about what is best for me as if this Nurse Practitioner took one SINGLE moment to consider my perspective, knowledge, and unique circumstances; to have my concerns brushed aside and TO BE SMUGLY SMIRKED AT as I was essentially told that I could do what she said or get out....I left feeling completely devalued. Way to go, Planned Parenthood - devaluing a woman and leaving her without access to a needed medication. You will notice that the majority of the recent reviews for this location are one star. You will also notice that a few other patients mentioning that certain types of birth control were pushed on them as well, against their will and better judgement. LISTEN TO THEM. I previously went to the North La Salle location and had a much better experience, and I would recommend you do the same. Maybe I will too. read more

This is a great, busy place. You get buzzed in the door, and in the waiting room you meet an interesting slice of Chicago life. Young couples filling out paperwork together, business-attired ladies perusing the literature, older frumpy women dozing while they wait for their name to be called. White, African American, Latino, Asian, and various mutts of humanity all hanging out together, waiting for their needs to be addressed by the busy and smiling folks behind the reception screen. Finding myself unemployed and broke, I came here hoping they had payment-plan birth control or something. I tell the receptionist my situation, and in no time before I even see the doctor for my initial exam, I'm enlightened to the Illinois Women's Health initiative that will get me free everything after I sign up for the program, and suddenly a great many worries are put at ease. The doctor was friendly and great as well. I was greatly amused by the goodie-bag that they are somewhat famed for. Strawberry-flavored condoms? I would have never bought them on my own, but am amused to have them now :-) read more

I went in to this PP for the first time today and was DENIED access to my birth control. I just needed a refill on my current prescribed birth control and they would not allow me to get it because I needed a consultation with a doctor beforehand and a scheduled appointment, which was not displayed anywhere. Even though I have been taking this birth control for several months, the PP associate still refused. I am really disappointed and unhappy since I support Planned Parenthood and what they stand for. read more

Not a glorious moment but please, I need to put this gynecologist on blast from 3 years ago. Short haired woman who's name I not mention was very unprofessional, very condensing, and extremely temperamental. Sure doctors have a bad day & looking at private parts doing pap smears can get extremely aggravating/ monotonous but that does not excuse them from treating patients like crap. Rude as in flailing the door open, slamming it shut, saying "umm umm hold on hold on, gosh." I specifically ask for generic loestrin (discontinued now minastrin generic brand) and she writes a script for something completely different. As for wait time, you can't really complain because you show up when they want you & If the doctor is running behind schedule (it happens) and you wait your turn at a clinic. My advice is go see a legit OB-GYN, not some exhausted clinician. PPH can email me ;) or take this down. read more

Great magazine selection! Granted they were from 2006, but National Geographic gets my vote everytime. I read a fascinating article about nanotechnology which provided me with a lot of perspective since it was four years old. I should really check in now and see where this nano stuff is at! The receptionists were friendly and respectful and while I didn't go into the back, my other half did and she seemed satisfied with her experience. From a guy's point of view, I enjoyed the very calm, clean and entertaining waiting room. OVERALL: Happy when I left, better educated, curious about nanotech and protected from unplanned children. read more

I don't know why this location only has 3 1/2 stars. I just left and it was such a pleasant experience. Everyone was so nice and I only waited for 10-15 minutes (I came 15 minutes early to my appointment). So maybe people who had to wait long were walk ins or came right on time but they were busy. It always takes 2 hours before I'm out the door here even with an appointment, only maybe 7 mins of that time is spent doing anything other than waiting to be seen. So this little place is tucked away and if you blink you may miss it. Even though it's in a nice area the building its self is a little sketchy looking. When you get inside though it's really nicely put together. The ladies in the front are extremely happy and helpful. When you are in the room they do tend to dumb everything down and explain every little detail about everything that is going to go on in your appointment. It was rather annoying, like I've already had birth control for well over 10 years do we need to discuss how to take it properly? I suppose it's good just in case someone doesn't know, but I suppose maybe they should give you the option to skip the long instructions. I digress. I have come here a few times for regular STD testing/checkups. They are very close to the blue line which is why I initially chose this location. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable. This place is wonderful!! I have never been to a planned parenthood before and was expecting a much different experience. In the end, I stumbled across an extremely helpful and inviting environment. I was able to get my HPV shot here, birth control, and a bunch of other stuff. All the ladies are extremely helpful and kind and I would recommend this place to anyone. The building outside DOES look a bit shady but the inside is warm and inviting. Wait time isn't bad at all and everything is thoroughly and efficiently done. read more

I haven't been here in a while but today's appointment was amazing! Each staff member I interacted with was kind, positive, informative and put me at ease. The staff members are beautiful and did not hesitate to answer any of my questions. The questions they asked me never felt probing or inappropriate. In reality, it felt good to know they are watching out for women in abusive or unsafe situations by asking a few simple questions. I highly recommend this location (even though I have insurance and a regular doctor, I choose to come here for any "lady" checkups due to the convenience of the location and the positive outreach of this organization). read more

I had trouble finding an appointment. I got here for my 9:15am appointment at 9am. By 9:45, have not been called at all. I go up to ask about when I'd be called. I'm told, well you got here early soooooo. It was really condescending in the way I was spoken to. I mentioned my appointment being past 30 minutes. Even though I was actually there for 45 minutes but obviously the first 15 min don't count. This is a constant issue with this location. I've had to leave in the past because the wait time was unbelievably long. And when asked, I get blown off with their terrible attitude. How are they getting away with this? On a regular basis too. As I'm writing this review I still have not been called in for my appointment l, and my appointment time has passed an hour ago. read more

I was late to an appointment. 3mins outside of their 15min grace period. Absolutely my fault however the MANAGER told me that I could be seen if I'm at the end of my window to get my shot. If I am not at the end of my window then they can't see me today. If I have to be rescheduled I have to be rescheduled. It is unbelievably poor customer service to tell a patient that unless they are in the most compromising position possible that you will not help them. The MANAGER actually laughed when I sounded stressed about having to take more time off work to reschedule. She then continues to say that they suddenly don't have enough time because they lost my paperwork and I have to resign consent forms. So first you could see me, now the forms will take too long and it's not possible. This is disgusting behavior from a planned parenthood employee. No one answers the phone and when I have been on time I wait forever in this place. read more

Ok, let me begin by saying I appreciate Planned Parenthood for all the services they provide for women. I was unemployed for nearly half of 2007, and being uninsured, I utilized this PP. I called to make an appointment on Friday (that's the day they reconfirm Sat appointments) and I got in for the following day. Yipee. I was just there for an annual. Everything going along swimmingly. I'm checking out and this is where everything gets a little bewildering. She hands me my bc and leans over to the nearby shelf and hands me a brown paper bag. Me: What's this? Receptionist: Just a goodie bag. I leave, throw my bc in the goodie bag and head out. Fast forward 3 hours and I'm in line at Jewel(s), am digging in my purse for my wallet and the goodie bag falls out of said purse and spills all over the counter at Jewel(s). What's in the goodie bag you ask? 30, that's right 30 condoms. I am mortified. I sheepishly scoop up the condoms, pay for my 2 bottles of wine (yes, just wine) and get the hell out of there. 30 condoms? Really? What am I? One of the Spears sisters? Oh no, they don't use condoms. The last time I bought a box condoms it took me 6 months to even put a dent in it. And I was in a relationship then. I might have been offended, had I not seen the receptionist grab the bag and it was clearly just one of identical bags on a shelf. All said and done, I still love PP. But I do need to find a new Jewel(s). read more

Three words: Mary Beth Shulien Worst gyne visits ever. I am a big supporter of PP and have been an on-again, off-again patient of theirs since age 16. This nurse practioner is rude, condescending and made various treatment decisions for me without asking. She doesn't like it when she's challenged (for example, when she makes treatment decisions without checking in or asking, and is checked). I have never, ever been cut as the result of a PAP smear, but on one visit to her, I bled for over 12 hours following the exam, which has literally never happened in my life. The way she was acting, it actually crossed my mind if this B*** intentionally cut me internally because I pushed back on her rudeness. In addition, she prescribed the wrong antibiotic for my urinary tract infection (the rx prescribed was determined to be ineffective with the particular bacterial strain I was infected with) and I had to really push to be re-treated and get the correct medication that would actually treat the infection. The way PP is organized now, everything goes through a central phone center (also staffed by very rude women) and it's difficult to actually reach someone at the clinic where you were seen or get a follow up visit scheduled or lab results, which should be a no-brainer to make that process more stream-lined for efficient, prompt care. I just can't recommend this clinic. Blech. read more

With the exception of my last annual being at Northwestern, I've only gone to this PP location since moving to Chicago 4 years ago. I send my girl friends here all the time, too. I should probably start handing out pamphlets for them or something. The goodie bag referred to below by MaryAnne has been a helper in non-conception for several of my friends! Unfortunately, not enough of them though hahaha! Not only do they give you the equivalent of 3 boxes of name brand condoms (lol), you also get a Plan B pill, a female condom (who the heck REALLY uses these?), booklets about STD's, self breast exams, and the HPV shot. But srsly ladies (and maybe gents?), you receive top notch care at a very reasonable price. If you're unemployed, they give you all the forms that you need for the Illinois Women's Pink Card, which means free annual gyno appointments, BC exams, STD testing, and birth control pills (and although it's a limited list, it's still popular name brand choices). Oh, and the mother of all goodie bags. Protect yourselves! read more

I've been to this location and the Roger's Park PP. Between the two I prefer this location. It is easy to get to by public transportation (bus and train) and the facility is nicer. I always try to get an appointment first thing in the morning. As the day progresses the appointments get pushed back more and more. I've had to wait for over an hour at least twice when I had an afternoon appt. However, I'm not bothered much by the wait when I think about the low cost and high quality of care. Everything is inexpensive or free if you get the Illinois Healthy Women Pink Card (get it, it's easy and totally worth it). The NP at Wicker Park is very professional, kind and obviously caring. I recently went in for my annual Pap and had to wait for 1.5 hours. I clearly remember on my way there for the first time, I was stuck in traffic and thought I was going to be a few minutes late, so I gave them a courtesy call to tell them that there's a possibilty that I might be late but I'm still coming in. The lady on the phone was really rude and said that they're going to have to cancel my current appointment and reschedule. I was so speechless as to how nonunderstanding and rude she was. But I let her have it her way, and showed up a week later with a new appointment. Once I was in there with my physician, everything went great. She was very nice, very helpful, and very understanding. I felt comfortable seeing her which is a great quality for a gyno. At the time, I was unemployed, so they signed me up for a "pink card". So for the next year I'll have free service and supply. Last week I had my annual Pap there and I had to wait for 1.5 hours!!!! I'm not even overexagerrating. It was extrememly upsetting because you know how for my first visit that lady cancelled my appointment because I called to say that I might be running a few minutes late, well, they were extremely late and there was no one to give me updates on how long it would be. I ended up getting a student physician from Rush who decided to use my vagina as an exam. I wasn't bothered though because that has happened to me before at UIC when I was a student there. If anything, I'll feel flattered that they can learn something from me. Her supervisor who was PP's gyno was very nice though. She made me comfortable even with two people in the room and my legs wide open. She gave me fun little facts which eased up the process. I guess the service is great if you're not getting checked up or have a medical student that you have to wait on. Two Things: If you qualify, DO ask to enroll for the pink card. Paps are only on Mondays. And you have to schedule EXACTLY 2 mondays before the date that you want to go in for the examination. Great for people with no insurance like me. read more

I had such a great experience here. I was to undergo a minor outpatient procedure, and I nearly died from a heart attack I was so nervous. The nurse, Tina, was SO helpful and informative, by the end of our 15minute discussion I was confident enough to continue with the procedure. Tina also helped me complete paperwork that allowed me to get my Gardasil vaccine discounted. I feel like I'm in the driver's seat of my health every time I'm at Planned Parenthood. I've been going to Planned Parenthood for over 10 years. I've always had pleasant experiences with the doctors. Although I have had long waits, the staff at all the other locations have been very polite. They obviously have a lot of issues with organization. I started going to the Wicker Park branch the past year and a half. When I showed up on the Sunday (03/02/14) that I needed to start a new pill pack, (I'd been out of the country for a few weeks and just got back.) I was told that my prescription had expired and I needed to have a consultation before they could give me anything. They never told me that I had bought my last pack, or I would have scheduled an appointment ahead of time. After waiting for 45 min in the waiting room, the YOUNG LATINA RECEPTIONIST said they could fit me in at 10am the next morning (Monday, ugh). She seemed a bit rude to me, but I decided maybe she was just bored at her job. I'm sure my reaction wasn't exactly pleasant either, so I thanked her and left. I live a mile away and usually walk, but it was really cold. I left a half hour before my appointment to make sure I'd get there early. Unfortunately, I waited for the blue line for 20 min. I finally just left and started walking. No buses came by on my way. No cabs were available either. I showed up 20 minutes late frozen and knew that I was probably not going to be seen that day. Sure enough, the same receptionist informed me (with zero emotion) that I'd have to reschedule. To my surprise, she told me I could come in the same day at 3:15pm. I made sure to arrive 15 minutes early this time. The girl still didn't seem to remember me even though it was my 3rd time there in 2 days. After waiting for 45 minutes [AGAIN!], the girl called me up to the desk to return my ID and said they were running way behind and it would probably be another 30 minutes. I decided I might as well wait since they had pretty much already wasted my whole day. No point in wasting another one. Eventually another patient, who came in after me, asked how much longer it would be and looked a bit defeated after talking to them. Shortly after, she was called in. I started feeling paranoid that they were skipping me on purpose. When I went up to ask how much longer the wait was, she snidely told me it would probably be another 30 minutes. When I asked why people who had come in after me were let in ahead of me, she said that they must be there for a different department. I was tired of waiting (2 HOURS!!) and walked out. In my experience, a "consultation" consists of pretty basic questions that takes around 5 minutes. I have insurance, but I basically fork over full price. I'm pretty sure more than half the people that go to this establishment get free service or pay next to nothing, many of whom are working the system. You would think that they would appreciate the business of people who pay immediately, but it seems they could care less. I work in the service industry, and I was insulted by the way I was treated by the "gatekeeper" of Wicker Park Planned Parenthood. Based on the last several reviews, it looks like I'm not the only one that a bad experience. They should consider firing some of their receptionists and hiring a more professional staff that knows how to smile and provide actual customer service (like apologizing to people when they've had to wait for so long instead of being rude and unfriendly). The location is convenient otherwise I would have left sooner, but I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. They are clearly to busy to keep up with demand, and I don't want to give anymore money to a place that treated me like crap. Bad karma is coming your way little punk receptionist!! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to go to Planned Parenthood. I have a really bad, what I think is a, yeast infection - I cant even walk right that's how painful it is. I looked on yelp and on the website and there was nothing stated about needing appointments. So we went over and walked in the first door but the second was locked. The lady buzzed in through the phone "Can I help you?" I just stated that I'd like to see a doctor. She then said "Do you have an appointment?" I responded no. And she told me that "You have to get an appointment to see a doctor" So basically they turned me away without even asking what was wrong. And this lady had such a rude tone in her voice. She could have at least asked what was wrong. I will never go back to this location again. So disappointed in the customer service right off the bat. How can you turn someone away? read more
