Today I needed real tech support on my 11 year old Hot Springs Spa that is on a remote island. I thought I would be out of action for days! Justin from Oasis's service dept called me. We jointly executed a complex re-programming task including adding a disconnected jumper wire that needed to be connected to replacement controller board (installed by a non-Oasis third party). All done via phone and FaceTime. His help was flawless. 17 mins total time. Worth a fortune. Back up and running for a weekend of guests. Here is one of my lifetime rules. Buy quality products with excellent service and support. Oasis fits the bill. Give them your business and you will enjoy the benefits. Oh, did I say this was NO CHARGE on an 11 year old unit?? I was relieved to see that they did have at least two Keiser stationary bikes, which are increasingly rare these days as most gyms get suckered into the big lumbering fancy LOOKING bikes with the flashy screens and video-game simulations, that have lousy ergonomics making you feel like you're pedaling a toy not a real bike. They do have some Concept rowers at least, which is a good sign. Overall I'd say it's a fairly decent Y except for the sauna, which was sorely disappointing in that despite being brand new looking and quite pleasant/spacious, was being run at some geriatric 150-160 degrees tops. Oh and they close way the hell too early on weekends: 5pm on Saturday, 4pm on Sunday. Only slightly less lousy than my home Y in Cambridge (4pm both days). Argh!

Very unusual encounter here…read more.. I am temporarily in the area and had been looking for a gym membership. A friend had suggested FitLab as it is smaller and typically not as busy as some of the larger gyms in the area. I was going to swing by and get a workout in / sign up, but decided to check their office hours online first. Online they were offering a 30 day free membership, so I figured I would sign up. Knowing I would likely have to pay something if I was only planning on getting a month membership. I quickly received a text from FitLab Hudson asking to schedule a time to come in. Since I was literally right down the street, I popped in. The woman who had texted me, Tara, was working the desk. I told her who I was and she replied with "oh but you didn't text me back.." in a rather off put tone, which took me back. Nonetheless, I don't know her and this could just be her demeanor, which is totally fine. I was there to workout so it's all good. I explained what I was looking for, a one month membership. She said the best she could do was a two month membership for $49/month. I told her that really wouldn't make any sense since I'd be paying for an extra month... She stared blankly back at me until I said "okay, I guess this isn't the gym for me. Thanks." lol... Having been to many small gyms in the past, I know that they are frequently more than willing to accommodate and meet your needs in exchange for your business. They also will often encourage you to get a workout in and see if you like the gym itself. Well not FitLab Hudson. I did have good luck at BestFit, which is only a few minutes away. They were very welcoming and accommodating people who appreciate your business.

It's a large facility and really holds its own against some of the nicer gyms I've been to in the city. Over the years, I've really enjoyed seeing them continue to invest in the gym floor. They've added some new equipment, including the Rogers Athletic Pendulum Power Squat Pro and Hip Press, which are fantastic for leg day. They also have tons of cardio machines and two turf areas, including a longer one that's great for sled work. The women's locker room is clean, with plenty of lockers and I think four restroom stalls. There's also a steam room. My one wish is that they had a sauna because that would make this place 10x better. If they did, I'd probably take my time here after my workout. They also have separate rooms for classes and a daycare center. The price is another reason I think this place is such a good value. It's around $30-$40 a month depending on your membership, plus a $50 annual facility maintenance fee. The weekday hours are convenient too, with the gym open from 5AM to 10PM. Weekend hours are shorter, from 6AM to 6PM. They have a massive shared parking lot which can get a little crowded since it's right next to the casino, so timing can make a difference. Overall Service: Signing up was seamless. There's no pressure or having to sit through a long conversation while someone tries to upsell you. Once you signup, you can use their app, scan your QR code when you walk in, and there's usually someone there to greet you. Your membership also gives you access to other local locations in Chelmsford, Lowell, and Drum Hill. The whole process is easy and straightforward, as it should be for a gym.
