I've been coming here to sell 3x a year for about 7+ years! Yes it's crowded, yes it's messy, yes a ton of items are damaged or shouldn't be sold. But when you pick around or come early enough, before the customers destroy the store, its a delightful experience. I have never encountered a rude employee from these ladies, ive had nothing but positivity from them. Yes i receive less than i want from them but that's ok since my clothes are now more for adults than teens so it's understandable! Im surprised they still take some of my clothes! Keep in mind, for the amount of customers they serve each day, they can't exactly have people on the floor picking up after everyone. Workers are rude and complained when I dropped off clothing behind my back. I have bought clothing and shoes from here that ended up being unauthentic (fake)!!! I went into there with 5 full duffle bags of name brand 9/10 condition clothing and they said they were interested in a pair of shoes for $5 In those bags were clothing items at least over $300-400 This wasn't even worth my time and they don't understand the value of clothes. I am not one for writing reviews but my interactions with this store and it's sister store have bothered me. I brought clothes in not knowing what to expect. My friend and I walk around browsing as I wait, I am not impressed with most of the items I see. Like a sundress that's faded and beaded from multiple washes. Nothing that I would have even donated to Goodwill. The items I wanted to sell were in much better condition that a lot of the items I saw in the store. Some of my items were even new with tags. But since they weren't from stores such as Forever 21, Rainbow or Charlotte Russe they would not take them. They told me to try their sister store Style Encore, they take "Labels". Seriously, Worthington, Joe Fresh, Old Navy, Gap? Those are considered labels. I guess I would have stumped them if I had come in with my St John's, Givenchy, Giorgio Armani, Nordstrom Signature, or Yves Saint Laurent. But I was optimistic since they take men's clothes, so I returned. I had men's new Polo style shirts, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy. They wanted to give me $1.75, yes that's right, one dollar and seventy five cents each. I am not sure who determines what is considered a "Label" but, Sellers Be Ware!!!!! This is a gently used clothing store. I haven't tryed to sell anything so I dont know about how much you would get for your stuff, but I did stop in to see what kinds of stuff they had and I was far from impressed its a salvation army with higher end stuff. Well so they clamed I saw very little high end and everything with a pretty high price tag i saw stuff from Deb, Abercrombie and fitch, Baby Phat, and lots of South Pole things I can get at Marshals or even Tj Max for the same price and new. I've been here twice, and the service is consistently cheerful, friendly, and accommodating, even on Black Friday. Yes, the items are gently used--but sometimes brand new with tags. The prices are reasonable for the brand. Yes, sometimes comparable to TJ Maxx and Marshalls, but nothing is guaranteed in any of these stores... That's the luck of the draw. In my opinion, it's worth the trip to look. I spent over $150 here and have a ton of new things, including Christmas gifts. One gift was a brand new with tags Coach hat & scarf set--marked retail over $175 and I paid $55. It's worth the trip to shop! read more

Absolutely horrible. It's terrible for selling and buying clothes. Their staff is extremely rude and treats the costumers like dead meat. If you're trying to sell your clothes, they will rip you off. Don't even try. If you have an originally $80 item that is new with tags, they will buy it from you for maybe a dollar, then they will sell it for $30. They don't except any clothes except for specific brands they are looking for, and they won't even tell you what it is. They have a list of brands and rules for what makes clothing acceptable on their website, so I only brought in the ones following the exact guidelines, and they refused to accept any. They don't buy seasonal clothes year round. Anything their website says, they do not follow. If you want to buy clothes, expect that they will have tears, stains, muddy, and some even with old gum and dog poop sticking to them. The clothes their reek worse than the inside of a 30 year old rental pair of rental skates. They are very picky about what brands they get, so they will pick the exact things they are looking for, even they are in trash condition. You would get better quality just going to a thrift store. At Plato's, they sell lots of converse shoes, the kind that you would want to throw away. The laces are frayed, the bottoms and inside are worn, they have holes, they are covered in dirt, smell like actual garbage, and have mysterious things stuck to the bottom, just to name a few flaws. They sell these for no less than $12. Don't buy garbage. A slumlord would rip you off less than Plato's. read more

Don't go! New staffing should be hired because the girls all look like they don't want to work they talk and lounge around. When I brought my clothes to sell they told me it would take 30 mins and they took 5 mins to look at "everything" and in the end they took one item out of the 3 bags of clothes I brought in. Not worth the 40 minute drive, or time. I can tell they didn't go through everything because they were lazy to un-tie a knot from a bag that I did. The things they asked for was basically 90% of what I brought in. It's obvious they didn't look. I left with 4 dollars and my all of my bag that I brought in. Typical Platos Closet. One annoying thing is when your selling clothes and you wait or stay close to the register they don't let you know when your items are done being reviewed. So you end up sitting there forever! It's a terrible policy. Store associates should notify you when your items are ready especially if your sitting right there. Plato's Closet is a chain retail store that sells gently used clothing geared towards the teenage and young adult crowds. I personally have not shopped there but have sold items and with each return trip I've become more displeased than the last. Those working within the store need a crash course in being able to recognize designer labels and high end clothing and shoes. I have had them purchase basic t-shirts from Old Navy while passing over a brand new, tags still attached, Michael Kors sweater. They've purchased AE and A&F denim from me but left the pairs of AG, KORAL, Joe's Jeans and J Jeans in my "We're Not Interested" bag. I questioned why that day and received a snippy, "Those aren't brand names. You can get them at, like, a Wal-Mart." The day Wal-Mart begins sellings $300 denim is the day I will start shopping there. My biggest grievance with Plato's Closet is the price they pay their sellers. I recently brought in a brand new Juicy Couture winter jacket, the $499 price tag still attached, and was offered $12 for it. Ha! When I asked for the coat back the girl behind the register shot me daggers as if, how dare I, the rightful owner, want it back! I later sold that same jacket in another consignment store for $400 on a 50/50 split. The prices they offer are, for lack of a better term, pitiful. I understand that it's a company and companies main focus is to make a profit, but offering next to nil for high cost items is sad. I'm sure that the aforementioned Juicy Couture jacket would have been on the rack for, at the minimum, $150. Those working within the store need to be taught professionalism. I've heard snarky remarks come out of their mouths when going through the clothing to be sold, and one time a very snarky remark was made right in front of the teenage girl who was selling her items. They have this "I'm better than thou" attitude towards sellers (for buyers I can't speak) and let's face facts: you work in a retail clothing store that sells used clothing. That does not make you better than me, a physician, who is just looking to sell what I am no longer wearing. Take your items to a consignment shop. They split the sale price fairly, either 30/70 or 50/50 for most stores in this area. It isn't instant money in your hands but you also know you aren't going to be ripped off. read more

Pros: You can get nice clothes for a lot less than if you buy them brand new. Also I do love the idea of turning in clothes you don't use anymore so someone else can enjoy them. Cons: The store is not organized well at all. I've found I spend more time trying to figure out where things are than I do actually picking things out. They make selling your clothes EXTREMELY difficult as their standards are unrealistic. I've tried multiple times to trade in clothes that were in near perfect quality and nice brands, but the staff will find the smallest reasons to deny your offer. Today I brought one full bag of clothes to this place. The clothes were purchased more than one year ago but they were certainly in great condition, gently used and had no stains. I had jean shorts, one pair of grey denim, a few bracelets, a brand new faux leather vest, and lots of shirts from Express, A&F, Old Navy and J Crew. The store claims to take clothing for all seasons, but they took NOTHING from my bag. This was very surprising because these clothes are definitely in great condition and much better than what I had seen in store. While I was there I decided to buy a pair of white shorts. I have two very lovely coats that just don't fit me any more, one and Ellen Tracy with a fox color that was purchased at Nordstrom and only worn about 3 times, and the other a very tailored knee length black wool coat by Ralph Lauren. I also have several Coach bags I wanted to bring in but after reading the reviews of what they pay for the items it isn't worth my time. Sellers Beware!! Make sure if they're giving you cash for any of your items, check what they take and what you get back! They will give you Next To Nothing for your clothing!!! I had some expensive pieces and got peanuts for them. I was naive and did not double check. They tell you "We'll give you this much for so many pieces". Your things are already packed up, ready for you to go. You've got to ask to see what they're buying and if it is acceptable to you. I'm writing this review so that other people don't do the same. This is a consignment store that alleges to sell only better brands of clothing. I have been here before and sold items they list specifically on their site, and they purchased everything I brought. This time I brought similar items and the store bought almost none of it, even though my things were better brands, in better condition than what is currently in their store. While looking through the racks, I saw many worn-out and stained items. Not to mention labels from WalMart, K-Mart and Target, which I'm not knocking, but you can buy new at those places for what they want at Plato's Closet for used. So after this trip, I'll wait for clearance sales on new items at the better stores, rather than pay the same price for used. I have been to 1 other Plato's Closet, in the state of Delaware, and it was smaller, but much nicer. You expect the same standards and quality at all stores in a franchise, but apparently not so in this case. read more
