I brought in 6 men's button-up shirts back in the fall (could've been August or October), that ranged from brands AE to H&M, to sell. When I came back to collect, none of them were bought. These shirts were near perfect and still had the thingy on them from the cleaners. This weekend, my daughter and I went there to shop since they have their 75% off sale going. As I was browsing, I noticed that they had a HANES UNDERSHIRT FOR SALE THAT CAME OUT OF A 6-PACK FROM WALMART FOR $8.99! How does my AE button-up shirt not make the cut but they buy a plain white under shirt from a multi-pack?! They also had CROC PLATFORM SHOES!!! Wtf am I doing wrong?! This place is becoming a joke, I think I'd rather deal with all the lowballers on Facebook marketplace. I've heard from multiple people that these young ladies don't know how to select stuff to buy. One friend brought in multiple items from Charlotte Russe that still had tags on that they refused to buy. I just don't get it. read more

This store is a joke. Called in advance regarding the items they purchase. Checked all my items to sell. Some brand new items, never worn. Made sure everything was in excellent condition . Brought everything fresh and folded, they returned just dumped into a bag. Bought nothing due to "condition" and they only buy items less than two years old. Brand new items were bought this year. That they wouldn't accept. Also note, they claim to be a "vintage" store. Do they know what vintage is? Not if they only buy items less than two years old. What a bust. Don't waste your time. Staff here is very young and obviously has not been appropriately trained in customer service. I brought in some clothes from Old Navy, Maurice's and American Eagle. The girl behind the counter dumps the bag out and says "these are too old looking for our customers." Confused I asked what made them old looking and she asked if they were my clothes. I said yes. She said "we're a 21 and under store, you're a lot older than that, maybe you should just give them to Goodwill" What does my age have to do with it?! read more

If you bring anything to sell, expect to take most if not all of it back with you. They rarely actually look through the things brought in - if the first few things they see don't interest them, they'll quit looking. The "staff" is a joke. They're all a bunch of young girls who hate their jobs and act like they are doing you a favor. They are either on their phone or talking to each other, you never see them actually working. The store is always trashed and nobody seems to care. They charge you ridiculous prices for things that you can buy at the store for the exact same price or cheaper AND ITS BRAND NEW! Thanks to this Plato's Closet and my ability to hoard clothing that I'll never wear, I'm now $205.30 richer. Most people probably aren't familiar with what it takes to pry $205.30 out of the hands of Plato's Closet, but just in case you're wondering, it's not that easy and it basically starts with roughly 6 totally full garbage bags full of my old sh*t. Of course, they didn't take everything, but for the dollar amount I got back, I left happy as a clam. Even though Rockford is quite a ways for me to drive to get rid of stuff, it was totally worth it and I was happy to see my master plan work out. You see, I was going to take my stuff to a regular ole Plato's Closet in the suburbs (probably Schaumburg), but knew that if I went there, they'd probably only take like 2 things and give me maybe $4 because for as much dingy, pilled, over-worn stuff as they have there, they sure are picky as sh*t. I'd gotten a tip from a friend a while ago that when she sells all the ugly stuff her mother-in-law buys her husband, she heads across the border to Indiana where the Plato's Closet standards are apparently a little lower. I went on a gut feeling that my stuff that wasn't cool enough for the PC's of Chicagoland might have wings out in Rockford, and turns out, I was $205.30 worth of right. Another tip if you're going anywhere to sell your stuff (and it's def going to seem kind of dumb, but it's true and it works), is to go only when you've got your sh*t together and are looking sharp. I'm talking make-up on and you have to be dressed nice, or at least be wearing something that's of current trend. I even went as far as to wear a nice dress... which is kind of a big deal for me since I never wear them. Dressing in simple but stylish attire is best because let's be real, no matter where you go, you're being judged and the nicer you look when you drop stuff off, the nicer people will assume your stuff is- but don't over do it with what you wear because if you walk in with a really complicated outfit and 10,000 pieces of jewelry on, they'll assume that your stuff can't possibly be that nice because if it were really that nice, you wouldn't be able to afford that much of it. Basically, there's a psychology to it. The store itself was mega impressive. It's HUGE. Like, whoa. Their selection of styles is really great and everything was hyper organized. Lots of staff ready to ring up clothing or check in goods and they were super efficient. All other Plato's Closet's should take note, because this place does it right. And the girls who work here were really professional and not at all snooty. Terrific store + thanks for the cash. read more

The girl that helped me didn't have a good attitude whatsoever. I work in customer service myself and even on a bad day I would never act as bitchy as she did. I expect a "hi, how are you today?" Or "how can I help you?" Instead she acted like she hated her job and just wanted to get me and the clothing I was selling out of there so she could go home. I don't appreciate attitudes like that. I've spoken to other employees in the past and had no problem at all, but this particular person ruined my experience. I brought in two huge baskets full of newer clothes that I haven't ever worn or worn maybe once. And some that are fairly old. Brand new American eagle jeans, rue 21 clothes all in perfect condition. They picked out 5 things (that were the oldest in the baskets over 2 years old maybe more) and said that the other clothes were "too old". It was honestly a waste of gas and a waste of my time, especially when I have a lot of new stuff and they picked the old and faded stuff. They have no style or take. This store is in a good location and they have a lot of clothing, shoes, and accessories to look through. However, don't get your hopes up when trying to sell clothes here. They take a fairly long time to look at your stuff and only take a few items out of a large quantity. They seem to not want to buy your clothing, even though that's what they advertise. I have sold clothing to them multiple times but I always leave disappointed and I have a lot of really cute name brand pieces to offer them. I wouldn't recommend shopping in this place unless you wanna be judged by the employees the entire time. All the employees look like they hate their jobs and all of them have been extremely rude everytime I've been in there. You could bring in 2-3 garbage bags of clothes and they'll take probably 2 things and give you maybe $5 for them. And not to mention they don't even look through all of it! Went in there with clothes I've worn maybe once or twice (so they still look brand new) and the ladies that I had to deal with were snarky skinny twigs who told me they were great clothes but they don't accept plus sizes (anything above a size 16). I went in today to try and sell a few items of clothing. One was a pair of "this seasons" $50 "sky high" AE jeggings that were worn once.. No damage what so ever and they were literally less than a month old. Platos does have nice clothes that I enjoy but I do have to say that I have a nickel card and it only works as Debit and of course they don't have a debit card slider. I am upset but luckily I was able to pay a different way. They need to get a debit card slider. But overall I like the store and I will return to the store. They could also try to organize the clothes better. read more

This store was jam packed with everything! Very nice selection for men & women. So much here that they are moving to a new location twice it's size with even more stuff! I'm excited to see the new store in March :) Some of the things are pricier but there's still great bargains to be found and quality pieces worth splurging on. Went to sell clothes (that were only wore once) for the first time. Was told it will take 40 minutes, so looked around. Watched the process and they took the clothes from bin, looked at them and then put in a garbage bag, because we have never have sold clothes at this stuck up establishment, didn't know the exact process, the customer service didn't bother to explain. That process took 5 minutes after we dropped the clothes in the bin. After a long time, went and asked how much longer; was handed the garbage bag and said the clothes were rejected because they weren't name brand, but after looking around for 40 minutes, found plenty items that were from Walmart that weren't the brands they so call want. It's fine that they rejected, but dang, DONT make people wait 40 minutes and have the customer ask how much longer just to deny them. They could have called, since they take your number or text, something other than nothing. Customer service was terrible. Was just trying to make a little money before going off to school, but apparently instead of spending money on name brand items and choosing to save for College, a second hand store comes along and treats you like crap because your items weren't of their liking. I'm so happy, Not, that the staff who are employed here, speak for the shoppers, because they have a crystal ball on what the entire shopping world wants. read more

This place is horrible! I went in to sell two garbage bags filled with clothes and they only bought one pair of jeans for $4.62. They say that they don't buy anything that's over 2 years old but the one pair of pants that they bought are going on 4 years old. Also the khakis that I bought FROM THEM 6 months ago were also rejected. So they're full of it. Oh and not to mention that the entire process of them rejecting everything took over an hour.
