We collected our clothes to resell ( they were great brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Loren, Coach) but when we entered a store nobody greeted us or even said hi, and a rude man in a rainbow tshirt instantly said we're not accepting any clothing and that we have to come back in 1 week. Very dismissive. They had plenty of employees and some of them were sitting there doing nothing. They didn't even say hi or smile at us. We drove 40 min both ways. The store manager or whoever he is seems very rude. I purchased two items and when I was at the counter, I took them off the hangers and set the clothes on the counter and the hangers right next to it and he said you're not supposed to do that. Maybe he didn't mean to be rude but he was very snippy about it, and it was so offputting that if I hadn't liked the sweater, I would have left. The fact that there's signs inside the changing rooms saying "Don't let the Karen's win and please leave a positive review" says all you need to know about employee attitudes. read more

absolutely terrible experience, the manager or whoever he was was so rude. so condescending and snarky about the bags we put the clothes in for selling. immediately when we walked in the store he mentioned not being able to clearly see any stains or damage on items shoved into a trash bag. i didn't reply. he then asked for an ID. i didn't know we had to provide an ID, so i handed him mine and was confused a bit. he then went on to say that if our Ids are fake we know who to track down. what a joke what person wants to hear how potentially they could be a criminal? like wtf? im 21 and my little sister is 15 she's barely just driving. he completely turned our shopping trip around and made the day awful. it was one of the most awkward and confusing situations ive ever encountered. i was about to walk out and sell my clothes somewhere else. its just all about customer service and if you can't give that experience well, then don't work in customer service. i don't know what this man's name was but he was bald and at the front desk the entire time. needs to be fired. i also agree with the karen signs in the fitting room, what a weird way to connect to the customers. read more

I've had this tote of clothes I've needed to bring in for a while now just sitting in my car, I rarely make the trip to this side of town especially from being out of town. Jeff notified me that they weren't even accepting take ins today and that they are already preparing for spring and summer! He was so kind and still agreed to look at my items! Great friendly service and I appreciated his time! Make sure to call ahead and select line 3 to see what they are accepting and if they are even doing take ins. read more

You can literally find just about any style of clothing here. If you look through you can see usually $100's priced clothing selling for as low as $8. It's always a good vibe when I go in and the workers are super nice. Liiiittle stingy when you sell your clothes there, but definitely better than just dropping them off somewhere. So rude!! I've dropped off clothes and shopped here before and have never had such an awful experience. They were a little picky before, but this time they were almost stuck up. I dropped off my clothes and signed in then chose to look around. I saw some okay-worthy clothes and saw some almost scary clothes. Decided to leave after about 10 minutes because I was quoted an hour. 15 minutes later I got the text it was ready for pick up. I finished my errands and went back. The original lady was there and was confused why I was back. No big deal. A different lady says "unfortunately we passed on everything today. Some were too worn and we require the clothes to be freshly laundered and we can tell you didn't do that." EXCUSE ME? I would never give dirty clothes! That's insulting to me! I get being picky, but I had unworn old navy and American Eagle sweaters and 3 pairs of American Eagle jeans. This place is honestly ridiculous and it's insulting that they called my clothes dirty. This is a thrift shop, not a designer store. Get over yourselves. read more

During my summer visit to Traverse City this August, I had the pleasure of shopping at Plato's Closet. I was pleasantly surprised to find some delightful designer brand treasures. We are just starting to enjoy cooler fall nights here in Dallas and I wore one of my Plato purchases (a gorgeous knit top). Totally scored! My always fashion forward friends in Dallas doled out the compliments :-) Look forward to shopping there again when I visit TC. read more

Selection of clothes is ok for the area but the prices are HIGH. Brand names yes, but they are USED clothes! If you wait for the sale prices at the retailers you would pay less for new clothes. Customer service is not just having a young girl "fakingly" smiling at you. No bathroom at any store is a HUGE mistake. The girl told me "sorry, no bathrooms go next door to Sears"...really? Well they lost my business. By the way this is a big new place that they are leasing and they couldnt allow the courtesy of a lady's room. Hummm...tacky, even Goodwill has bathrooms for customers. Okay so first of all I made this yelp account for the sole purpose of letting everyone know about the horrible experience I had here. This is my 3rd time selling clothes here. The first two times were fine and I was pleased with the experience. This time, however, I was told that it would take about 20 minutes for my clothes to be gone through. Not bad for a small bag, so I went and did some errands and about a half hour later I went back. I looked through the store to pass some time and about 25 minutes later I went back to sit in the car. I waited for an hour and a half. I walked in the store to check on my items and the lady told me that it has been done the whole time and I haven't received the text message saying it's done. I waited almost 2 hours for my stuff to get done, I live about 45 minutes from Traverse and I don't go here often so this was very frustrating. On top of that I agree with the other reviews that the service is not the best. Also, this bag I had contained very clean and new items such as brand new jeans from American Eagle, American Eagle/Hollister sweaters, and more? I was given $17 for 4 items. Now compared to some of the stuff they do pick that looks like it was picked out of a dumpster behind a Detroit GoodWill I'd say my clothes were acceptable to sell. Extremely disappointed with Plato's closet in Traverse City and I will not be going back here. read more

The people who worked there were all very nice but I would not go back. I waited 2 hours to have someone look at my 1 bin of clothes and finally gave up and took my clothes back when they told me there were still four appraisals ahead of me. Another problem is that they tell you that you must pick up the articles they do not want on the same day you bring them in or they discard them. Bad policy! Crappy selection in store, but yet they won't take very nice things which more than meet their strange requirements. Flaky judgments vary between snippy unhelpful clerks. Raggedy Items for sale in a store that reeks like Goodwill marked at ridiculous prices. Very poor business model. Make twice as much at traditional consignment shops if you're patient enough to wait. I went in hoping to find a great deal on a used dress so I wouldn't have to pay full retail price somewhere else. I was extremely disappointed with the type of products and quality of products Plato's Closet in Traverse City carries. 90% of what they had looked like it came out of Deb 10 years ago and was covered with pilling and snags. Huge disappointment considering their ads claim they only have brand name, excellent used condition products. Either raise your standards when you accept items for consignment or stop claiming to have such a top notch selection. read more

Hard to understand the boutique attitude when accepting items, because their racks are full of such junk. Faded, shrunken or stretched out, pilled, etc. Ick. Same old story, just like the multitudes of second-hand stores around, you have to look long and hard before you might find a decent item, but then it's listed for a ridiculous price. Gave Plato's a second and third shot in different seasons as well as after moving to their new location but still completely disappointing, maybe even worse. Never tried to bring things in but have heard them embarrass others by publicly and loudly pointing out why they wouldn't take items AND YET THE STUFF THEY FEEL IS OKAY HANGING ON THEIR RACKS is mind boggling. The other reviewer is correct about the clerks with attitude. Junk for sale plus snotty staff does not equal a great shopping experience. One person said she only uses Plato's for a quick buck now and then but trusts another source for everything else. I won't be back and strongly do not recommend. read more

This place lives up to its reputation. The girl told me a pair of shoes I brought in were "perfect but too worn." I seriously wore the shoes inside a bar for two hours. They are still for sale in the mall now and they looked less worn than over half the shoes in the store. I honestly saw a pair of men's shoes covered in dirt and my shoes still had price tags on the bottom. How can a pair of shoes be worn and still have stickers on the bottom? At the risk of sounding like a whiner, I admit this felt like age discrimination. What should I expect in a store where there are NO adults to be found anywhere. read more
