I don't leave many reviews, unless service was terrible or service was outstanding. Guess which one you're going to read? Walked into Platos Closet, which I've never been to before, in an attempt to sell five pairs of Under Armor sneakers that I wore once each. My wife told me I had to LOL I had the original boxes and it was obvious that all pairs were hardly ever worn. They looked like new. The girl at the front desk gave me an estimate of between $20-$23 for each, which quite honestly surprised me because I would gladly have taken $10-15 each. I originally spent around $80 for each pair 1-2 years ago. She explained that I'd have to leave them so they could be inspected and that I could return in half an hour. I returned and went over to another girl who handed me the estimate sheet which said $8.32. Quite honestly I was about to accept their offer of $8.32 for each pair of sneakers when the girl said, "no no no that's $8.32 for all 5 of the sneakers" LOL. So thats approximately $1.75 for each pair. I smiled and said, no thanks and left with my 5-pairs of Under Armors. I understand that these 2nd hand stores are in business to make $$$$$ but that's not only ridiculous but I felt extremely disrespected. I would rather donate these sneakers to Goodwill or give them to a local church than except their offer. Will never go back. read more

I have learned that no two Plato's Closet's are the same. This one is not the cheapest, but the selection is absolutely jaw dropping. They have a whole section dedicated to Free People and most of the stuff is brand new. Every time I go here, I find amazing jewelry and amazing clothes and amazing bags. read more

I know it may be controversial, but I love Plato's closet. They do not pay top dollar for your clothing, but the point is, it is quick cash for your clothes. I think I'm officially boycotting Plato's Closet! The staff is always rude and judgy and they give you like $2.00 per clothing item (even if it's new with tags and name brand). I would rather give my clothes to a woman's shelter and know I did some good. I was pretty hesitant about leaving a review, but here I am. When the staff sees you walking in with your bag, you can just see the looks on their faces of a rolling and having to actually work. The person who asks for your ID isn't very friendly nobody greets you and asks you how you are they just say ID. This is not the place you want to drop off nice branded clothing. They want you to bring all of your athletic wear and buy your Lululemon your NOBULL your Athleta wear but then they are going to pay you crap prices. I brought in some pretty awesome athletic wear, and things that were fairly new a total of about 12 items between Lululemon leggings and tops. They wanted my 12 items in Exchange to give me $23. Oh, are they out of their damn mind? So they can turn around and sell one pair of leggings for $20 and make this huge profit? This place is awful and you have high school/college kids looking through your stuff, deciding what school for their generation lol. read more

Plato's is my go-to consignment store in Wilmington. They have the best selection of used clothes for young adult girls who like casual, quality, beach town brands like Billabong, O'Neill, Lucky Brand, Levi's, Lululemon, Brandy Melville, and so on. I think they price things well in comparison to other buy, sell, trade shops I've been to and try to sell things that are currently trending. I have never tried to sell clothes here because of my experiences with stores like such in the past being that you bring bags of clothes and they pick one, maybe two items. I recommend Poshmark for selling, but that's just me, personally. When it comes to buying used clothes I actually enjoy looking for jeans most. I feel like you don't really know a pair of jeans until they're warn in a little bit. I've found 3 quality pairs of pants here that I wear all the time and have held up after a year + of owning. Time! You have to give yourself time and be in the right mindset when you come to shops like these. They have that used clothing smell which isn't desirable. The racks are jam packed with items and your arms get sore sifting through it all. It's color coordinated which takes extra focus, especially when going through the black tops. And you get excited with the low prices so you rack up 20 items to try on but then only ending up buying one or two, if that. It's a process! They have a small private parking lot that I've never seen full. You can earn points by giving them your phone number and if you follow them on social media you'll be the first to see "New Releases" or enter in giveaways. There's a Clothes Mentor right next door, which has a similar concept but with more of a mature selection. And a Target across the street if you give up on the exhausting process of discount shopping and just want to go straight to the point... not that I've ever done that... read more

I love coming to Plato's closest! Sometimes you can find some nice things. Though I would suggest you not charge people 25.00 whilst a tag on the item clearly states the seller paid 7.50 I get the price has to go up in order to make a profit for the store and pay employees. Anyways neither here nor there I like to come here and enjoy looking around to see what goodies I can find for myself. It doesn't break the bank so I do recommend to parents and anyone to come here. Great finds at a fraction of the cost. Swing by and check it out if you haven't already. The prices are reasonable on some thing and whilst others I can't see paying for used at that price when I can purchase that particular thing new a bit lesser. read more

Whether it's the selection at times being subpar or just the overall vibe of the store from employees, it seems like they don't want your things, they want to restrict the times to donate as much as possible, and the payout is hardly worth the time of even walking in/waiting. They carry some fine things but don't waste your time bringing clothes here. I brought two bags full of things they were asking for, barely worn or still had tags. From brands they carry and styles they needed. They took 7 things out of 64 and paid me $14. Not worth the effort at all. They are full of cheap Shein clothes and stained sweaters but won't take my new with tags? Get Fresh for Less I've added quite a few gems to the wardrobe thanks to this place for a fraction of what you'd get it for anywhere else, how they get those prices is a bit of a problem though. You're honestly better selling your clothes or straight donating them just about anywhere else because they will fleece you like a fool, pun intended. You can get better pay for your nicer clothes on Facebook Market, eBay, or some of the local consignment shops. One time I brought a brand new $60 shirt to that place with the tags still on it because they put the wrong size in the bag at Belk and I tossed my receipt like a nitwit, they offered $6, that should've been an actual joke but it wasn't. Other than that, some of the shirts and such have stains, inspect prior to buying and it'd be nice if they got sent out to the cleaners before being put on the store floor or something. Also, I'd love if they stopped writing in permanent marker on the bottom of the shoes they sell, since they also print a sticker label for them anyways. Not only does it greatly depreciate their value financially, it also says "Hey, check out these fresh new shoes I totally got on sale at a discount shop! How dope am I?" Not to mention, it's hard to flip nice shoes they sell at a massive discount for a major profit from the suckers who sold them for a fraction of their worth when it has the hilariously low price they already re-sold it for written in permanent ink right on the bottom, this is probably my biggest issue with the place. Overall, it's great as a clothing store when you dig through the dirt for the diamonds, but it's certainly not the best buyer or shoe shop. Plato's a 4 outta 5 from me, mostly because the employees are also pretty great. read more

I called yesterday (Monday Jan. 24,2022) and spoke to a man that informed me I could bring 6 bins of clothes in the next day for a cash payment. I drove 45 mins today to get there and was told that as of yeterday afternoon they are no longer paying cash as per the owner. I told them I spoke to someone yesterday and was told that I could bring it in for cash the manager said the owner told them monday afternoon they could only do store credit. Instead of using common sense and calling the owner and explaining the situation and see if we could get cash as we were told she told me it was too bad store credit or nothing. I am infuriated that I wasted 2 hours of my day loading all of the clothes and driving there to encounter such incompetent staff. read more

Platos Closet in Wilmington has done a fantastic job at employing the worst of the worst employees. These girls could not care less about you, the customer, or what you think of them. For many, it appears that this is their first job and don't need the money. Their parents probably just told them to get a job for the summer because even they don't want to be around them. They never say hello or smile and all they do is talk loudly about how much they hate being there and can't wait to get off work, or what "sluts" slept with their friends. I understand their "date" policy for accepting clothes, but when did a never worn, plain black t shirt with the tags on it go out of style? Never, that's when. Do your sanity a favor and DON'T shop here and DON'T sell your clothes here. Feel good about yourself and just donate your clothes to the less fortunate. read more

They have a big store and lots of good deals, but the staff can be very snobby. I tried to sell some clothes to them, and they were very rude to me. I understand the rules for selling clothes back (obviously, they don't want old/tattered pieces), but they rejected a brand new pair of BCBG jeans because they didn't think they were "cute." Worst customer service every time I've been in there the past couple months. I keep saying I won't go back but unfortunately I do. Do not waist your time on trying to sell here either. Especially if your clothes aren't last seasons. They are not helpful or friendly. They don't ask you how you are doing, if you found everything I needed, if they can get you a dressing room. Everyone just kinda stares around and try not to make eye contact with their clients. I always say every time I go in is my last time. But this time SERIOUSLY a was. Done being disappointed. I absolutely love this store! Great styles for less! Also authentic designer stuff at an affordable price! I have sold items here before and had no issues at all. I got cash for stuff I didn't want anymore! So much better than getting nothing for them. If I need helping looking for something specific the staff is always willing to help. They always seem to be changing the store around and putting out new stuff all the time. I would highly recommend this Plato's Closet location to all my family and friends. read more

when is this location going to get new management/ownership and start operating like an actual plato's closet? they are never buying but mens and plus size, don't offer cash for purchases over $30, cut off buys mid day (before most people get off work, makes sense right) and are so overstocked with garbage, outdated inventory. as if it isn't inconvenient enough for you to try to make it on your lunch break to drop your stuff off; you also absolutely cannot pick up your stuff the following day either without facing donation/store credit. i wish there was another plato's with different owners nearby. worst one i've ever had to shop/sell at. employees are also unfriendly and unwelcoming 9/10 times, not a customer first oriented store at all. this place is an actual inconvenience read more

I brought in a brand new Lilly Pulitzer dress, with the tags still on, and they offered me $10...$10 for a $200+ unworn dress. Needless to say I didn't accept the offer. I come in often with cute, gently used clothes and they turn down a lot of items because it's apparently "too used or not in style". Ironic considering there's clothes a lot uglier and beaten up in there than what I bring in. I'd rather put in the effort of selling my stuff on Poshmark than selling them 5 items for a whopping $10. read more

Ok, so here's the deal with Plato's Closet. First off, they cater to Teens and young adults. You can tell by the items they sell, but if that doesn't convince you then trust the fact that they told me " Sorry Nikki, but some of your items are not geared to our Teen buyers" should. That's fine, I haven't been a teen in awhile so no hurt feelings on my end. I took in a huge duffle bug FULL of stuff I wanted to get rid of. The reason I choose Plato's this time to sell with is because you don't have to wait 30 - 90 days to pick up your money like other places. This spot buys it right then and there and you leave with cash in hand, or in my case a check because I got a lot back. :-) They are looking for stuff like Forever21, Paper Denim Cloth, Seven jeans, Target, Old Navy, Gap...the stuff I call 'Throw Away Clothes' - because you basically wear it once, or for a season, and then throw them away. Anyways, these items, along with several of my husbands old douchy graphic tees I made him quit wearing when we started dating, some purses I didn't want anymore and a few pair of heels that I'd never worn are what they bought. So there you go, a place that will give you CA$H money for clothes you thought were only fit for a Goodwill donation. And I didn't think the girls were snobby at all. I conversed with the girl who was going through my stuff and we had a fun chat about living in Brooklyn prior to NC. So I guess maybe there is new staff? read more

I was under the impression that Plato's was a gently used clothing store. When I went in to shop I had a very difficult time finding anything I liked due to the fact that most of the clothes were not in style or worn out. Also, I saw quite a few Target/Walmart brands. So, I went home and went through my closet as I just recently moved to the area. I had a few pieces that were new with tags from places like American Eagle or Fashion Nova (not high end, but not super low end either). Out of the tote that I brought in they only accepted 4 items because they claimed my other things were too old/not in style. Let me be clear, I'm not a fashionista, but the 4 items they bought were purchased 3+ years ago and among the items they turned down several were purchased in the last 3 months. I think it's interesting that they are selling Merona brand T-shirts that look a couple seasons ago, yet they don't take an American Eagle shirt that was from this summer. read more

For the Seller: Don't waste your time! I took a big bag full of teen name brand items today. First I had to wait around about an hour to get my clothes processed, then they actually tried to pay me for a small bag of clothes that didn't even belong to me! Mine were hidden way on the back of a shelf. Once they finally got the right clothes, they only offered me $7! I told them I would pass. If you really want your money's worth and you have the time, give ebay a shot. If not, just drop them off at Goodwill and count it off on your taxes. For the Buyer: Again, don't waste your time. While I was waiting I looked around a bit just for kicks. They claim everything they buy is new within the last year. Not true! I saw Lilly Pulitzer items for as much as $65 that haven't been in the store in over 4 years! If you can't afford something season new, wait for the semi-annual online! I would also suggest checking out Goodwill if you want name brands at a cheap price. When I needed a skirt for choir that I knew I'd only wear once or twice, I decided to try Goodwill and actually found a gorgeous like new Ralph Lauren skirt for $3! I dropped clothes off there on Monday and they told me they would call me within 3-5 hours. After not hearing from them at all, I call on Saturday to see if anything had happened. This place is literally a joke. Some of the employees working there are some of the rudest people I've ever encountered with. One in particular gives me snotty looks every time I come in. I came in trying to sell clothes and had brought them in a trash bag and that same rude female told me that she wouldn't go through my things again if I brought them back in a trash bag (I didn't have a big enough bag to put all of my clothes in). Also, they rarely ever buy ANYTHING. I have brought items in that have ranged from Walmart clothes to brands such as American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Adidas, Nike, Pacsun and all of my name brand clothes were given back to me, yet my Walmart brand clothes were bought?!? I've also tried going back and reselling items and what do you know, the same items that were refused the first time, were bought. It's literally all based off of the person going through your items. Also, at the bottom of the receipt it tells you what items they're specifically looking for. Well that's a joke because I have brought in those items and they still didn't buy them. They'll have the same or similar items I try to sell, yet they still won't buy them. Don't waste your time trying to sell to them. And to top everything off, the last two times I went in there and have gotten my bags back after trying to sell some items, I had clothes missing from the bag that they definitely did not purchase from me! This place has really gone to the birds in recent years. They offer next to nothing for brand new name brand items, hire the absolute worst of employees. Employees who speak of what a "shitty" day it's been and air their entire personal lives out in front of the store (like customers are not even there) and they don't even accept things new with tags on them due too "it being too worn or older style". That's the typical response you get from the robots behind the counter. I have been shopping here for years. Since I was about 15. I am now 25. I used to get a pretty decent profit from them when I would take things in. Now I don't even bother with losing the money or the time. They take FOREVERRR. Not to mention half the crap they have in there is old, ratty or worn. They even have old navy and things from Walmart?! I have never seen a place go so far downhill. My advice. Shop at Ross, TJ maxx etc. you can get a super cute, super in style dress brand new at one of these places for $10-20 vs a worn out $15 used dress that you have to weed though the racks to even find at Platos. It's so sad. I could actually buy brand new American Eagle jeans or Hollister jeans for a few dollars more than what they sell them for! (Hollister is currently selling all of their jeans for $25) Platos wants to charge $18-20 for a pair with defects or blood stains in the crotch. Unbelievable. read more

The girls here are extremely rude. I've been here to sell at least 3 times and every time they are rude and snappy. As soon as you walk in the door they just say "have you sold here before?!" No hello or anything. Once when I came to pickup what they didn't take and get my cash (after over an hour of waiting) she gave me the wrong bag..I could have easily left there with someone else's clothes in addition to my own! They didn't take any of the name brand good condition jeans I brought, so I took them to The Fairy Circle, a consignment store, and they took all of them. Take your clothes elsewhere. read more

Be sure to scrutinize all purchases, sales are final and many items have imperfections such as snags, tears, or stains. Example, I brought in a brand new pair of Charlotte Russe jeans and a bag of really nice heels and sneakers and when they rejected them and I asked why they said oh because they are too worn out! So then I said um they are brand new and she looked all flustered and said well they are out of style! Wow talk about lame.
