Platypus was recommended by another well regarded painter who had retired. From start to finish, they were responsive, accommodating and professional in painting the trim of my 1931 house. Their workmanship was noticeably better than the last paint company I used. They had great attention to detail, with excellent prep work on trim, windows and wrought iron railings. Tall scaffolding was required which they managed in tight spaces. The foreman was amazing, always listening to my requests and solving problems along the way. All of the crew were pleasant, hard working and skilled, some with special expertise. I also made use of a free one hour color consultation from a designer they recommended (several to choose from) to select a color for exterior doors. The cost was reasonable for the quality. I've had Platypus paint the complete interior during a full remodel, as well as the exterior doors and window, and also do a follow-up stain treatment on cedar shingles. In all cases, the work has been exceptional; the on-site team thoughtful and courteous and helpful; the work speedy, tidy and reasonably-priced, in my judgment. I've hired other painters in the area on 3-4 other occaisons, and I'd recommend Platypus above all of them. They worked quickly to meet a tight timeline on the exterior stain work recently. They were available on a reasonable schedule. They started a couple days later than expected due to some extra scaffold that was required, but they finished on-time and I was happy that they did the job safely and with quality, instead of cutting a corner and trying to do the high parts on ladder. read more

This is my first negative review on yelp. I thought I might be in trouble after the "foreman" left a 16" x 16" transmission fluid stain on the driveway the first day. Well, that was just the beginning. These guys tried cutting all the corners they could, said they painted two coats when it was one (that's why we could see primer), did a terrible job taping off the new tile floor, their first attempt at sand and prep was a joke, and they didn't even finish painting all the cabinet edges or toe kicks. They were the highest bid and I have seen them around Piedmont etc., but I had to micromanage the hell of them just to get a basic paint job. The cabinet doors came out pretty good (which were done off site), but everything else was a complete battle and I was still left with unpainted surfaces and touch up work after there weeks for three tiny rooms. They made some attempts to fix things, but really I'm not sure where the disconnect is with this company. I'll post some photos, they should speak for themselves. If you're looking for a high end paint job, I highly suggest you look elsewhere. read more

We were very pleased with the work Platypus did in our home 3 yrs ago, so we asked them to take on a couple of new problems that had cropped up and were making us concerned about the soundness of our home--cracks in the exterior stucco and dryrot in the interior sill of our the large picture window. I told Paul we had tried to buy a replacement sill from the window manufacturer but found they are no longer making this detailed trim piece for this old window line. No problem was Paul's response, we'll kill the dryrot and repair the one you have. Then he set about to find the hidden source of the moisture that had caused the problem in the first place. And, the stucco cracks? Well, after Platypus's repair I couldn't even find a trace. Peace of mind provided by calm professionals at a reasonable price. The crew from Platypus was really good to work with. Foreman Cesar was great at explaining things, warning me when I could or could not open doors, and what to expect. They were polite, and on time, and always willing to address my questions. They were also willing to ask for my input when they weren't quite sure how to proceed. Even our neighbors were pleased; they found the painters to be courteous and respectful about moving vehicles or answering concerns. Our house was challenging to work on, as we have giant boulders on one side that other painters said would require us to rent scaffolding. Platypus was creative about using sandbags to steady their ladders. This saved us thousands on scaffolding rent. One of the best aspects of working with Platypus was the fact that they have carpenters on staff. It's virtually unheard of for houses in California not to require repairs for dry rot or other problems prior to painting. With most companies, we would have had to wait for the repairs to be done before painting began. Platypus's carpenters made the whole experience seamless. Early on in the job, the Platypus crew discovered that an entire floor-to-ceiling bank of windows at our house was only being held in by insulation foam and flimsy trim. The carpenters did an amazing job of constructing a scaffolding for the job over the huge boulders that are on one side of our house, pulling out the window panels, replacing the entire stretch properly and solidly, then repainting inside as well as rehanging our blinds. Foreman Cesar even repainted our front door a second time when the weather stripping pulled the paint off. He really goes out of his way to make customers happy. We were in desperate need of not only an exterior paint job on our home, but had a plethora of other problems on our exterior - we needed some major exterior stucco work, had a few rotted window frames, broken cement stairs, and in desperate need of adding flashing in areas to prevent further water damage. I did, I did, I hired them to do the exterior of the house in 2022. And like the interior rendition, their exterior job was equally superior. The management, the bid and proposal, and the choreographed painters were still there as before for the interior. We had additional cast members for the dance: the scaffolding team. The backside of my house is a good three stories tall and on a steep slope. It was amazing that anything could be placed along the back walls without sliding down the slippery slope. It all went according to plan, except they actually finished a few days earlier than planned. And the paint job makes the 27 yo house look like new. They are truly five star...they are that good. Found Platypus on the web and described the job which was staining and sealing my large decks that included stairs both at the front and back of the house. My home is located in the Oakland Hills. I was initially concerned that painters would be reluctant to do outdoor staining and sealing jobs. Covid had made these jobs all the more cumbersome. Anyway Joanne responded promptly and scheduled the initial review in three weeks time. Paul came out and could not have been more professional and knowledgeable. He suggested different stains for the balusters, railings and the more trafficked areas as well as the different colors for the front entrance balusters. It was clear that Paul was very knowldgeable and made excellent suggestions. The hardest part was waiting for an opening in their busy schedule. Several weeks later the date was set. I was told the sealing would take seven to eight days. The workers were superb. They were punctual, courteous and extremely neat. At the end of the day, all the tools were properly stored and the workplace was impeccable. I apologize since I only recall the name of one of the two workers, Dave. Both were outstanding. When we first moved into our fixer-upper in Oakland, we had dreams about being those people who did home improvement jobs ourselves. And, of the many things we had to do, interior painting seemed so easy! One weekend, we tackled our small guest bathroom with high hopes, only to emerge 8 hours later with the walls looking terrible and the trim largely unfinished - and we were no longer on speaking terms. We accepted the painful truth(s) that 1) we are not good at this; and 2) our relationship might depend on hiring professionals. So, with the assistance of Yelp, we tracked down Platypus. We have hired them for two jobs - one larger/multi-room job that included painting several windows, and (yes) the other job of fixing that dreadful bathroom. Each time, Colin and his team were great to deal with: reliable, professional, neat, non-disruptive, clear communicators, etc. They are very detail-oriented and thoughtful, and will stop what they're doing if they uncover something unexpected or need your input on something. His bids have been reasonable and accurate and, in the case of the bathroom, his team took less time than they originally anticipated, and he reduced the price accordingly. Other reviewers have noted that they are not always the cheapest. That is true and, in fact, as our renovation costs skyrocketed (surprise!), we did hire other painters to save some money. However, we learned that while the price differential wasn't huge, the quality/service differential was. We had other painters make important decisions without consulting us, leave a huge pile of cigarette butts in the driveway, show up late and work until 9 PM, and do work that is only marginally better than what we could do ourselves. After bouncing around between a variety of different painters, I settled on Colin's Platypus Painting for several reasons: 1. The scope of the project changed and the others who I had initially contacted lost interest once the scale of work to be done declined, forcing me to find new prospects. 2. Out of the three new prospects I talked to, one bowed out because there wasn't enough work to be done, the second had no interest to actually come out to see what had to be done (instead wanted to rely on me taking photos and him making the call based on that). 3. And then there was Colin. A breath of fresh air! We talked on the phone, making sure we were both on the same page. Then he came over and took a look himself at what had to be done, estimating what had to be done & how much time it would take to get the job done as a whole. A day's work for 1 person. We scheduled him to drop in and have the work done less than a week later and everything was finally moving ahead on our painting project. I highly suggest you take a look at their website. I agree that they stand by their philosophy and pledge listed there. To reiterate some of these key points based on my individual experience: 1. Colin was running late due to an emergency and couldn't be in for 0800 - only 1030. He let me know a day or two ahead of time. I think it was a big deal for him as they pride themselves on being consistently on time and standing by their commitments. It didn't bother me though as the job likely would have run over 2 days regardless and the key thing was getting the painting project finished on the whole, not worrying so much about when it would be done. 2. Colin went above and beyond and didn't just stand around waiting for the paint to dry. He either found something to do like a whole pile of additional touch-up painting that we didn't ask him to tackle OR he went to another job site where he could provide added value, follow-up with other customers etc.. 3. Excellent follow-up after the job was completed. Unfortunately, no, you didn't miss anything and no, I don't wish to change anything - it's perfect as is. Platypus was great from start to finish. We used them to paint our interior and plan to use them again to paint our exterior. They were responsible, reliable and courteous. We especially appreciated that Paul, the estimator, was the only person (of a few contractors) to correctly diagnose the "etch-a-sketch" cracks in our kitchen ceiling (turns out we had tiles that had been painted over and were falling), and the crew took out all the tiles and re-constructed our entire ceiling. I found Platypus through Yelp as I searched for a vendor to paint my garage and epoxy the floor. It was a bumpy start since I didn't hear back from Colin immediately. However, once I did, he was easy to communicate with (primarily email). He suggested that I make sure my floors didn't have moisture coming up before I epoxy it, which I appreciated. The other vendors I spoke to didn't ask about that. It passed the "moisture test" so Colin came out to give me a bid. I didn't really shop around too much, but the quote was around what I expected to pay. I went with Colin because he made me feel comfortable and he had a very friendly disposition (not sleazy, salesman like). Also, the positive Yelp reviews helped! His crew came out right on time and finished within 3 days. Everything looked great and done as requested. I did want some small holes patched, which the crew didn't do. Colin offered to send them back, but I said it wasn't necessary. Overall, I would recommend Platypus Painting, but I would say they're not the cheapest out there. However, you do have to pay a little more for good work and peace of mind! read more
