If a school seeks only exceptionally strong kids, you have a great pool of super performers. These super performers can be very ego centric and mean kids who can really be bad for timid kids. My kids complained about how teachers look down upon if your not a math olympiad winner or not exceptional. Teachers are very mean and they are responsible for some category of kids to hate this. My kids constantly asked me to leave this school because teachers and peer groups were belittling. Teachers even laugh upon kids who try to level up 'I think you should just limit to basics', 'I think you should step down to a lower class'..then other kids make fun. It is a torture for your kid to keep up when everyone is beating you down. NOT A GOOD SCHOOL FOR YOUR KIDS MENTAL HEALTH. My kid still gets watery eyes reflecting on experiences in this school. I would say study in your community schools where there is more diversification. You don't want to experiment with your kid's mental health. It is great to think that in a very competitive school, a kid will automatically get those qualities..it is a wrong thinking! I was actually intrigued to learn that in the sixth grade for instance, as the origin of the golden ratio was being taught in math class, the students were also being shown how it was applied to the Mona Lisa painting in their Arts class, it's application in the Renaissance era in Social Studies, and there was reference to the concept in Science, and even in the library classes. My sixth grader was absolutely fascinated relating her experience. As for the nurturing environment, you can sense the importance of core values in the school, it only takes one visit to feel it in the air. The students are also exposed to practical religious tenets, helping those in need, etc. I honestly cannot say enough about Oak Knoll. This is difficult to do in any school but SHP teaches that "your SHP brothers are actually family. It is obvious that the students have true concern for one another (even if they don't know that brother personally). Alumni seem to feel so much like SHP was their home that they never forget about the brotherhood & continue to introduce themselves if they see anything that makes them feel like the student or adult must have some tie to the school. There are so many clubs & sports available. Students have so many different types of opportunities to find "their tribe". The students truly enter as boys and leave as self confident educated men. The education is second to none with many different areas of study. The discipline must be just right b/c the boys all are well mannered, decent people that learn very quickly how to advocate for themselves. In addition, they are required to learn & participate in volunteer work yearly by assisting their fellow man with no judgement. Their values become incredibly strong. That is when we decided our youngest daughter must not return to 2nd grade at GOA. We gave official notice to GOA three months before school started 6/9/2018, and They agreed to refund the tuition. The headmaster is now trying to extort full price tuition of $22,000 tuition despite the fact she never started 2nd grade. GOA further harassed our older daughter by threatening to hold Her transcripts and diploma hostage while she was applying to college. We can not recommend GOA. DM Diana or me for details. Thank you.
