Strongly recommend against buying hockey or goalie gear from these fine folks. Normally, I wouldn't bother to leave a review but I've now had two negative experiences with Dedham and I'm happy to provide some feedback. For context, I've now purchased almost $1700 worth of goalie gear from Dedham over a few purchases. At first, things were fine. Respectful, decent service, fair prices - no complaints. My last two purchases have not been fine. I purchased a pro level catch glove that ended with an aggressive employee getting worked up when I offered $20 less than the $300 asking price. I was slightly surprised then but everyone has a long day now and then and communication isn't everyone's strong suit. Today, I purchased a used Bauer chest protector online. As I wasn't able to physically look at the piece I asked their staff to verify that there are no rips or tears in the unit. They responded with "Great shape, no issues." and so I purchased. I received the CA today and it's ripped. It's also single-handedly the smelliest piece of used gear I've ever received. These two little hiccups aren't huge issues by themselves. Offer a minor refund and I'll proceed without a concern. Instead, when I reached out for customer service to right this wrong - they called me a liar. That ticked me off enough to wander over to Yelp today. They replied that the "chest protector was sent out in pristine shape" and was "inspected by two goalie employees". That pissed me off. First, the unit is used, smells, and has a tear from wear under the arm - even though I specifically asked them to make sure it didn't before I purchased it. Second, if your first instinct in customer service is to call your customer a liar for your own f*ck up - you probably deserve to be fired or demoted to toilets until you learn how to speak to people. Third, don't tell me you had "two goalie employees inspect the gear", as if you forced them to line up and independently verify the quality of this used gear as if it were headed in to the Smithsonian. YOU. DID. NOT. You're lying to me and calling me a liar at the same time. The CA has a tear, you didn't see it, you don't know how to behave toward a customer from there. I finally got around to taking in my ski equipment. Wasn't expecting much. My skis were too old to be worth anything but I got great money for the boots and poles. Happy camper! read more

Strongly recommend against buying alpine ski equipment from this establishment. I purchased used skis and boots for my 6 year old, and using this equipment had been nothing but disastrous. 1. The adjustable bindings could not be adjusted to the size of the boots, so I had to buy another set of used skis (I bought the new pair at a local swap meet). 2. When I went to return the skis which couldn't be adjusted, I was told that their bindings were no longer indemnified and therefore, I couldn't return them. So I had to eat the cost of the skis I couldn't use. 3. After a mere two hours of skiing on the boots I bought, the heel of one boot broke off (the plastic was apparently so old and worn out that it just failed). This caused the boot to be unable to lock securely into the ski binding, causing a severe safety issue. 4. In order to keep my kid skiing this season, I had to buy a separate pair of boots. 5. The broken boots were so old and broken that I wouldn't be able to resell them anywhere, so I had to eat that cost too. read more

More than meets the eye at the Dedham Plaza. On one side, the side facing Route 1, there's Stop & Shop, Dress Barn, Men's Wearhouse, etc. But around back, there are additional stores, such as Tuesday Morning, Domino's, and Play It Again Sports. Play It Again Sports has a line up of their own parking spots right outside, labeled just for their own customers. Inside there are two counters - one for purchases, and another for selling them your used gear. I was there to have my skates sharpened, so I paused for a bit, then headed on over to the former. They took my name and skates and $6, and sharpened behind a closed door as I waited. I was told about this place by a couple of speedy skaters on recently sharpened hockey skates. Skate sharpening at the rinks, they said, are done by machines that just roll through the skates. At shops like this, it is done manually, and you can test your blades for sharpness by quickly rubbing your nails against it, as a sharp blade will shave off a bit of your nail. As I waited, I meandered the store. I noticed that they sell used tennis balls $1 for 3 (they buy used balls for 10 cents apiece), and the same for golf balls. Skates are out back. They don't string tennis rackets here, but suggested Boston Ski and Tennis in Newton. They call out your name when your skates are ready. Given my relative lack of (good) experience, I inquired how frequently skates ought to be sharpened and was told after every 6-8 hours of heavy use. No wonder they told me my blades were dull after having resisted sharpening for several years since a rather traumatic rink sharpening experience. I also picked up a pair of new bladeguards for $7.99. The other ice skate sharpening recommendations provided by those fellas were: MonkeySports, Norwood Sports Etc, Arlington *** Tried out my skates a week later, and it felt smooth against the ice. read more

The concept of buy sell or barter sporting goods is an interesting one but the store was lightly stocked and the used stuff was more expensive than the new stuff anyways. Definitely wouldn't trust this place. I've heard from several people that they sell defective merchandise and they refuse to let you return it and now I know it for sure because it happened to me too. But the worst part was that the manager girl was very rude to customers and has a serious attitude. She was being really nasty to the other younger employees like bullying it made me feel really bad for them and made customers pretty uncomfortable. It's a good place for small inexpensive items that's about it but I wouldn't risk buying anything of actual value from them. ripped me off, sold a snowboard, boots, and binding, with the bag, they told me how much $$ i was getting for each individual piece, took the bindings off the paid receipt, i signed before i noticed, guy then said that it was a package deal, but was $69 LESS than what he said i was getting, it was to late, i already signed, and got ripped off. when i confronted the owner, he refused to compensate me for the bindings, so they stole them from me. sell your stuff online, not only will you get more, but you wont get stolen from. this is an honest explanation to what they did to me. dont deal with them, theyll try to bamboozle you, my $1200-$1500 set up, i got $216 for a burton set up, flow bindings, burton ratchet boots, and matching burton bag. If there were zero stars that's what they'd receive. I will say they are understaffed, however that doesn't excuse the rudeness and lies. It starts with the manager, who lies to our faces and this is why the staff acts the way they do. Competency begins at the top, and the top is a woefully inadequate lying, nasty, scumbag. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless they enjoy being ripped off. I understand the need for the used sporting goods market but do yourself a favor and check Craigslist or eBay or Facebook marketplace before resorting to being ripped off and treated like garbage at this place. The franchise fee is very low, which probably explains the lack of quality. They don't even recondition the items they sell, buy low sell high and screw the customer when they realize they bought rubbish. They want $30 to size ski binding to the boots, it takes under 5 minutes with a flat screwdriver to size them, even a monkey can do this blindfolded. Some of the equipment there was still dirty from the previous owners. Zero class, zero service! Save your efforts and shop elsewhere!! A sports thrift store-i like the idea and it is executed well. My 9 year old son, who is playing organized baseball for the first time, needed a glove. Rather than buy a new glove, which would take a good year to break in properly (by which time he'd outgrow it anyway) we sought a gently used already broken in glove. From a selection of about 30 gloves, we narrowed the choices based on fit to about 5. Perhaps somewhat predictably, my son picked the oldest, ugliest, dirtiest glove of the bunch. It even has someone else's black permanent marker name on it. When i asked him why he wanted that particular glove, the seemingly worst of the bunch, he replied "its prolly caught the most balls dont you think?" Well how could i argue that logic. The store is very organized by category, new and old, golf, fitness, baseball/softball, hockey, snow sports, water sports, lacrosse, soccer, football, rollerblades, tennis...whatever your sport, you are likely to find the equipment and gear you need. Most of it is in good shape, i imagine they are trade-ins for upgrades or gently used items people turned in after quickly regressing to their couch potato ways. The service was fantastic despite being a fairly busy saturday afternoon. At the end of the day we bought: -the oldest, ugliest, dirtiest, already names but best glove: $5 -a used bat: $12 -15 used baseballs: $15 -Two new black baseball pants: $30 -New batting gloves: $12 -A cup: $8 His first catch in a game with that old ugly dirty glove: Priceless. read more

While the general idea of reusing someone's sporting equipment grossed me out at first, I must admit that two trips to this location have completely changed my perspective on this matter. I was in need of ice hockey pucks, at least five of them and this being near my girlfriend's place, this was the logical place to hit up. A quick drive later, I parked in the adjacent lot and walked right in. Immediately, amidst the mess, I was pleasantly surprised. It didn't smell of someone's sweaty hockey pads or moldy socks. Instead a vast store lay in front of me with sporting equipment everywhere from floor to ceiling. All kinds of sporting equipment. From soccer goals to hockey sticks, golf clubs and baseball bats. Everywhere! I found a giant bin full of pucks and grabbed a bunch. This was the transition I made from previously buying things new to used. After all, hockey pucks can't be covered in someone's sweat. Long store short the pucks were cheap and were in great shape and I have put them to good use since... [...] A few weeks later I broke one of my sticks while trying to do some slapshot drills. I figured that the broken stick would be a good time to try and maybe switch from wooden sticks to composite ones which are much lighter and get you more torque. I decided to go to Pure Hockey to see if they have anything worthwhile but their cheapest composite sticks were priced at $125. So again, I drove to this place and found some entry level sticks for $45. I grabbed two. They were in great condition and are terrific. I'll be coming back to this location in the future. The selection is great, the prices as well and the staff is both friendly and helpful. read more

I love Play It Again, don't get me wrong. This location is fine - it has good selection for a variety of sports. It's clean. It's well organized. There is a lot of great stuff jammed into that store front. I give that a 5 star rating. However. I discovered this morning after my game that my (now old) skates are literally broken. Like, a danger to my health and well-being broken. I panicked a little bit because I have another game in 48 hours. In those 48 hours, I need to find new skates within a certain price range that are also comfortable enough to basically skate in for the first time in a game. This is a really tall order. I went in to Play It Again, hoping that there magically would be perfect skates for me. I beelined to the used skates section (which was well organized, clean, and had signs up with details about how to choose sizes). The used section was a little bit lacking, but I'm understanding - I recognize that it's mid-February and hockey season is winding down. That's fine. I found a few pairs that would fit me, but they were mostly over $200. For used skates. No way. I checked out the cheaper new skates on display. I found 2 that I could probably be fine with aaaaaand they either did not have the specific skates in stock or they were in stock, but not even close to my size. I didn't find the new skates section quite as well organized as the used skates, so that was a little frustrating. I took a deep, calming breath and started to inspect each box looking first for my size and second for the price (and 3rd for a 25% off sticker). I literally found one pair of skates that was my size. Thankfully. And it was within my price range. Thankfully. And there was a 25% off sticker. Eff yeah. I went through the process of lacing them up, trying them on, walking around, all that stuff when I realized...(and this is what earned the 3 star rating)... Not once did an employee even acknowledge me. I saw employees helping other people, but not me. I did have questions, but none that really warranted me seeking out someone to help me. So I tried on my skates. I did the math. I looked up reviews of the skates on my smartphone. I watched a youtube video that detailed the features of the skate. I realized that if I wanted to have them baked, I needed to buy skates tonight so they would have ample time to cool and to set. So, I bought them. When I went up the counter, THEN someone started acknowledging me. I bought my skates, and then someone took me back to wait while my skates were being baked. I was sitting there, just waiting, when FINALLY, after having been in the store for an hour at that point, an employee came up to me and asked if I needed help. Seriously. It took an hour of my trying on skates and walking around and finally buying them (then waiting for them to be baked) for someone to even acknowledge that I was in the store. Kind of sucky customer service warrants fewer stars than the store is actually worth. read more

Finally decided after playing hockey my whole life to invest in a BRAND new pair of skates (not just new to me), and went in here one day. Ive been here a few times before for sticks and things and it always seemed fine to me. I was impressed with their selection of new skates as well as used. Mark, who helped size me for skates, was VERY knowledgeable about not only the correct sizing for different kinds of skates, but the differences in how they are built and perform. Love it here. It is my go-to place for my hockey gear and skate sharpenings ($6). Most of the kids that work here know their stuff on what to get if you are a beginner (as I was a year ago). I have come back to get random lost screws for my helmets and they didn't charge me. A few weeks ago, I bought a new stick and they gave me a free sharpening since I had brought my skates in too. Their used stuff is pretty good like knees pads. I had bought used skates and ended up buying new ones online since those REALLY hurt. I will probably sell those back since Play It Again does buy used items. read more

I recently skated for the first time in 20 years and decided to buy a new pair of skates. I called Play It Again Sports, Dedham and mentioned my feet's specific measurements(Mens 13, EE). An employee recommended the CCM Tacks 9040. I drove 50 minutes to the Dedham store. When I arrived in person, a very young employee handed me the 9040s skates without validating my measurements. I tried them on and initially they felt good. It wasn't until I skated in them that weekend, my feet were killing me. I checked the tag and was disappointed to read width D. I wanted to return the skates and an employee on the phone said he would only give me merchandising credit and charge me 20% to restock them (which is not even on the receipt's Return Policy). For a brand struggling to survive, it sure didn't seem to care about my future business or the fact I am willing to buy a more expensive skate to satisfy my foot width. read more

I started going to Play It Again when my son started ice skating at 4years old. After ice skating was skiing, then LAX, Baseball, and now snowboarding. It's the same for my daughter. We have gotten all of their equipment here and they are a great price and good condition. The best part is that when my daughter or son outgrown their ski boot (and skis) next year probably, it can bring those back and get a discount on new ski gear for them. I love coming here to get their things, we love sports in my house and we have never came here and left empty handed.kids grow out of things too fast, it's silly to buy new gear. DO NOT BUY HERE!!! Just thinking about how this placed ripped me off STILL makes my blood boil. Total criminals - they took one look at us newbies - my daughter was starting hockey for the first time in the fall - and totally took advantage of our ignorance. The sales staff there know every trick in the book - bait and switch and everything. First they persuaded us we needed an expensive ($90) right handed stick (because my daughter is right-handed), never thinking to check out her grip (turned out she needed a left-handed stick, and a plain wooden one for $20 would have been fine). The salesman tried repeatedly to lead us to the most expensive gear - actually rolled his eyes at my husband when I said we didn't need a top of the line bag, and picked out a cheaper one. He showed us all the 2nd-hand hockey pants on a rack, each of which were marked at $20, and then somehow we ended up at the register with a pair that cost $50 - and they are ripped and everything. Not only that, but they refused to take back the stick when I tried to return it, saying that they couldn't take it without a special sticker that was supposed to be on the receipt - and guess what? there was no sticker on my receipt. I tell everyone who will listen to stay away from here. It is a franchise, so I don't know how the other locations compare, but at this one - BUYER BEWARE!!!! PS - it makes me sick to even have to give one star - why can't we post a skull & crossbones or something for these type of dreadful places? read more

Very Dissatisfied! Went in last week to get skates for my son who is taking skating lessons. The guy in there suggests that I also get protection on his knees so I said ok -thats a good idea. Went in his first class and the instructors suggested he does not wear the pads as they prevent him from learning because he is supposed to get himself on his skates by putting one knee on the ice and with the pads his knee was slipping. Within 7 days I went to return them. I also went to exchange my husband's used skates to new ones. So the guy at the register says oh these pads are used I can only give you $4, meantime just a week ago I paid $25 for them!!! I said yes he used them for 1 hr he is like thats all I can do! They are rip offs - Pay $25 dollars a week ago and have my kid wear them for an hour and all of the sudden they depreciated 84%!!! I just returned my husband's used skates, told them "you just lost a sale" and walked out! Got an awsome pair of skates from LLBean down the street listed $5 cheaper than what Play It Again Sports was selling them for. Add a coupon I just got me an bargain AND I got to keep the knee pads that they were willing to give me $4 for. Never again will I step foot in that place! read more

I signed my kid up for hockey, so I went to the hockey shop and asked how much the full kit would be new. $400! Not including skates. After I stopped hyperventilating, I went to Play it Again. They hooked me up with a mix of new and used stuff for $200, which actually didn't seem that bad after the initial shock of $400. I didn't know what to get, so the staff was very helpful and went around the store with us getting all the stuff. Now my little one is well on his way to playing for the Eagles. Came in looking to learn about ski equipment and perhaps buy some used skis/boots/poles. Left with a pair of great quality skis, good quality boots and new poles PLUS their Adjustment and Tuning service, all for less than $180! They also mentioned that if there were any issues with the equipment not tuned or adjusted correctly, they would gladly re-do that for you, or take the equipment back.
