I was there at opening, came back to return something, returned a third time and couldn't help but notice within a 7 hour time period the (underage) workers did not get a single break? this is very concerning especially as a mother who has a teen in the workforce. just something id recommend you change before legal troubles come your way. read more

An absolute disaster!!!!!! I saved up and ordered a basketball hoop and paint from this store. At first they were nice and offered to take away my old hoop etc. Then everything broke down! They didn't center the hoop right, they called me to say it's an extra charge to take the hoop away that previously was not disclosed by two people, and called me a liar. Rude! Then the guy came to do the paint, Jim Smith from the Line Smith. He not only screwed up my three point line (see photo) but didn't finish the job! I paid an extra $700 to Jim directly to paint green inside the key and HE DID NOT FINISH! WHAT A SLOPPY FOOL! I contacted the Outdoor store and they didn't get back to me. I am so happy that this store is still around. I grew up in MetroWest and this was our go to spot for outdoor gear. I think I even still have a couple of tattered old bandanas I got here in middle school. Today, I live in Boston, and after searching high and low for a retail or online store with rollerblades in my size (that would arrive before winter), I had the genius idea to call Natick Outdoor Store. Sure enough, they came through. With a very competitive price, to boot. Tim, who I talked to when I called, had the skates ready for me to try on when I arrived. He helped me with wrist guards (the most important safety accessory, as they are the first thing to break your fall if you go down) and gave me some key pointers (it's much easier to move when you really bend those knees!) and I was good to go. (Off like a snail, really, but yay!) It lifted my spirits to visit and support a solid family owned business that does right by its' customers, today. I am glad that Natick Outdoor Store has survived the influx of big box stores and online commerce over the past 25ish years, that have contributed to the demise of so many of my favorite small businesses. There is something about the personal touch and humanity that one finds at a small business that I find tremendously valuable and comforting. Perhaps because I know that not only will there be someone to help me select an item that will serve me well, but also because I know that someone will be there to help me resolve a challenge, should one come up down the road. Okay, so I have legimately has some of the best (if not the best) customer service I've ever had anywhere. I wandered in looking for a kayak (an uncommitted looking which I explained) and John took the time to listen to my needs and then walked me around the store and pulled down every kayak that might suit them (including suggesting a couple I hadn't thought of), had be sit in each one and went over the pros and cons. When it seemed I had a favorite, he mentioned that they had demoed that kayak earlier in the day and there was a possibility that demo might be sold as a discount if they weren't going to hang on it to. John then called me then next day to tell me they were keeping the demo but that they are expecting an influx of the kayak I like later this month and that there would be a sale and so I could potentially save $50 or so. (Note, their kayaks are already almost all abotu $100 UNDER MSRP. And not just because they say so, I looked 'em up online too.) So not only is this a local business, it's a great local businesses with terrific prices and knowledgable staff who go out of their way to make sure you get what you're looking for at a price you can afford. I wish I had time to check out the camping section. I'll be back, and, I suspect, I'll never go anywhere else again for my outdoor needs. read more

Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable employees in every corner waiting to give you advice, or to leave you alone if that's what you want. They have a little bit of everything. Definitely one of those 'take-my-money' stores. On my first visit recently, I went in looking for an orange hat & 5 shot. I left with a hockey stick, grip tape & pucks, athletic shorts, a high vis headband, and a workwear shirt. When weather gets colder, I'll head back to get a pair of tip-ups. Their camping & outdoor recreation selection is really impressive. They could outfit you with everything you'd need for a camping, canoeing, backpacking or fishing trip (fresh or salt water, take your pick). They have free, off-street parking, the prices are competitive with other sporting goods stores and it's a local business. What more could I ask for? read more

I live 2 minutes away from natick outdoor store and have shopped here my whole life. The customer service and the way they treat shoppers is unacceptable. Some of the employees are nice and helpful, but many are rude. I've had them sell me defective products and when I try to return them after one use, the grumpy old man in the fishing/hunting section will argue with you and refuse to let you return it. I'm a fan of going to Natick Outdoor Store over someplace like Dick's or even going to Target or Walmart to get your camping / hiking / sporting goods needs. It's not as fancy or as shiny as the national chains, but it does offer a good selection of well priced goods with service to boot, and it's supporting the local business owners and the local economy fully. Walking into the store is a bit like walking back in time, what sporting goods stores used to be before they went a bit glitzy like Dick's. I came to finally buy a pair of non-goalie hockey skates. The moment we walked back into the hockey section we were greeted by someone looking to help us. After a little discussion about what I was used to, needed for support and a price range the employee narrowed it down to one specific skate. I tried it on and wasn't sure about the fit so he quickly grabbed another size so I could compare. The skates were priced great too. Definitely not a huge mark up. A good pair of skates is expensive but they have a variety of kinds all reasonably priced I ended up with the first pair but felt far more confident in my choice after discussing it with the extremely knowledgable staff. Been coming here since I was a wee tike. Excellent selection for shoes, hunting, fishing, boating, baseball gloves, hockey stuff. They expanded and re-opened about 12 years ago or so, and haven't looked back since. Always a couple racks of obscure hockey jerseys. When I was in 5th grade I used to blow most of my paper route money here on fishing lures and the Nike Bo Jackson cross trainers. Actually, I think Mom bought the Nikes for me. They came in handy putting out a fire that was getting out of hand while we were playing with rapid oxidation down near the lake once! They used to have a tent sale every summer (I think they still do) where you could get bargain basement Biloxi brices, I mean prices, on quality gear. This is by far my favorite store of its type in the area. Whether I am looking for a coffee cup for my campstove or a cup cup for my boyparts, it's my first stop. Don't let the horrible ads they ran during Sox games a few years back deter you, this place is great. They have tons of outdoor gear, as their name implies. I am not a hunter, but I gather they have lots of hunting and fishing supplies. I *am* a camper and hiker, and they have always had what I am looking for - from alcohol-gel fire starter to freeze-dried food, and anything else you could think of. What is not inherent in their name is the pretty broad variety of sporting goods supplies. Lots of padding, protective gear, mouthguards, and the like. Staff can be occasionally hard to track down, but when you do, they know what they are talking about. Parking is easy, with two lots, right in the heart of downtown Natick. This store has everything, even though it is a smaller in size than most outdoor stores. Hunting, fishing, camping, soccer, kayaks...they've got it all. They're slogan stands true..."If we don't have it, you don't need it". I like going here instead of places like Dick's and Sports Authority because it's a local, family run business and the prices are just as good if not better in some cases. I mostly buy my BF fishing items and the staff is super helpful. They are more than willing to assist you, but not oversell you. It's mostly middle aged guys that like outdoor activities and can pass on some helpful hints. Never fear ladies, even if you are not the outdoors type they do have a nice footwear dept. While you will not find stilettos, they have a great range of sneakers and comfy footwear brands like Merrell, Keen, Crocs, and even Uggs. There is also a display of Bert's Bees products. So whether you are looking for a fishing lure that looks like a lobster or a Swiss-made aluminum water bottle this store will have both plus many other items that may interest you. P.S. There really is not a better place to get cleats for your kids. They know what they are talking about, they talk to the kids pick out the most appropriate cleats for the sport and best of all... THEY lace them up and put them on your kid's feet, check the size, have them walk around and make sure you have a great fit!! How awesome is THAT?? We were in Natick yesterday for the Boston Marathon watching our daughter run the race of her dreams! We parked in the lot and were immediately approached and asked for $10 to park there even though we explained we would only be there for 15-20 minutes to see our daughter pass through on the course and then be on our way. So many businesses along our "watching route" had such a different attitude - welcoming us to their lots, cheering on the runners and happy to have an event bring so many people to their towns for the weekend. It was a disappointment that a local business felt the need to capitalize in this way versus savor the day and thousands of people (and dollars) the event brought to the area and towns along the storied Boston Marathon route. Such a different attitude than all the other businesses we encountered over the course of the weekend. read more

Buyer Beware! I love to support local stores but had a terrible experience with customer service regarding a manufacturing defect recently. I purchased a 3 pairs of fishing waders and separate wading boots for fly fishing with my sons. One pair of boots disintegrated after only being used 4 times. The boot soles completely came unglued while wading in a stream. The other two pairs (made by a different manufacture) held up just fine under identical use and storage. I've grown accustomed to outdoor stores like REI (excellent service) standing behind ALL the products they sell. The Natick Outdoor Store will not. I will look elsewhere to purchase any sporting goods in the future -- With so many sources of equipment available on-line and in stores, standing behind the products you sell with good customer support is the deciding factor for me. read more

Experiences vary here dramatically. Sometimes my experience is good other times, not so and in this economy, no room for that. Shoe and fishing departments are very good, but at times I have been met with rudeness especially in the team sports departments and elsewhere in the store. I know the "if we don't have it you don't need it" slogan is clever, but sometimes it feels like the arrogance of that statement rings true here. For example, the absolute refusal to be organized and assist with team jersey number selection is a mystery. It would literally take 5 minutes per box of uniforms to sort in numerical order player numbers. Then if a team jersey number is sold out it's sold out! Recently when the store was quiet, we were informed that if the number we requested for my sons soccer uniform was not among the first few jerseys pulled they WOULD NOT search any further for us. A numbers a number sure, but for many of us it does have meaning, Seems silly and not customer focused to tell people we are not going to organize the team bins and we are not going to look for your favorite number. We got lucky and found my sons number within 5 shirts, but the next person was literally shut down before she could say the number. Silliness. The excuses? What if everyone wanted the same number? And, we can't take the time to look through a box for a number when we are busy. Huh? If it's gone it's gone choose another, but at least make the effort. If it's organized numerically by size, there should be no issue. Nuf said. I don't understand why you set a policy that in a sense punishes people. They actually do look for you a little, but they make you feel badly for having asked. You would think with the box store limitations and general weaker service, the higher price point you pay at NOS, would be worth it they were kinder, smiled more and really made you feel welcomed. Other than the young kids who are actually a delight, and the shoe and tackle department, customer service here needs a major boost. read more

Impeccable Customer Service This is a great store. I really didn't know what to expect when my friend took me. *Everything* is what to expect. From "Burt's Bees" merchandise to boogey boards to yoga accoutroutrement. I would go on, but this place is packed with too much to even begin to list. I'm kind of focusing on what my eyes saw. As I was perusing. . . everything, we were politely asked if we needed help with anything. One thing I noticed is their fantastic customer service. We were not barraged. We were not ignored. The people here, it seems, genuinely like their job (*gasp*). At least, that's what comes across. Probably because they dig all the cool stuff you can do with this equipment. I was given some stellar advice. Ultimately, I got one of those over-the-door pull up devices and a few more things to strengthen my arms (long story). When we got it home, we couldn't put it together. I went back to the store the next day, and the gentlemen who worked there did it for me. That is customer service-help that extends beyond the purchase. I'm not sure why it didn't go together, but this was the last one. At one point, I think the guys were absolutely obsessed with piecing it together. And they did it! It's still up and I use it all the time. There's no doubt that it could hold a few people for all the great work you did (though I love it too much to try). I can't thank you enough. Don't forget to look around the register. I bought myself a "Slap Watch" for $8. It's fun, inexpensive, glows in the dark, and makes me happy. It's lasted a year. So, I'm a cheap date when I'm alone. There are also cool bandanas, the entire BB product line (rhubarb lip shimmer has almost been "accidentally" taken from me by two different people-that speaks volumes, no?), and fun things you didn't even know you needed. The cashier has a sweetness about her. Go here-it'll make you feel like a kid again. read more
