I've had pledges from the owner that staff is masked but each time I think I'll give them another chance I get screwed they just don't care about Covid safety. Such a shame. We ate here for lunch after cycling 50 miles from Portland on day one of our trip up to Seattle. I was desperate for some food, so anything would have been fine, but this little Mexican place was an excellent surprise. It was pretty empty when we got there, so the owner or manager got us chips as soon as we rolled up to one of the outside tables. They were still hot - yum! The salsas were also delish. I got two beef tacos with rice and beans and my boyfriend got shrimp enchiladas. Both dishes were delicious...great portions and really yummy, hot, fresh food. I'm not sure if I'll ever roll through Kalama again, but if I did, I would certainly stop by Playa for lunch or dinner. read more

My buddy Bill frequents Playa all the time, so when I was out and about on Father's Day and ready to head back home from Mount St Helens, I plugged Playa into my GPS and off we went. Once seated, I'm presented with Chips and two salsas (red and green). Both had the right amount of heat. The Green was my favorite. I enjoyed the chunkiness of it. I had the "Fathers Day Special" about $9 which was 10 prawns sauteed with Mushrooms and Onions and served in a cream sauce. Rice, Beans and Tortillas accompanied the dish. I did not see this on the regular menu, although an identical chicken version was present for about $13. The prawns were flavorful, not overcooked. The creme sauce was lip smacking good. Overall the meal was enjoyable. I would definitely go back. read more

Being in the service industry for 10 years gives you a feel for all sorts of diners, bars ect. This is the first time in my life I had to return food and refuse to pay for it. Not only was our waitress rude ANDDDD not to mention the food was obviously microwaved. The kitchen staff were screwing off, and the only person that seemed to care was the hostess. I don't care that we are in a pandemic. I will never eat at that trashy place again. You would be better off going to a gas station and getting a week old tuna Sammy for half the price! It shows it's age from the outside... but once you make the decision to give it a try, I suspect you will NOT regret it! Hospitality is top notch, ("on tap" options at the bar are limited -- but it's a small place)... but bottom line is that the food is worth the visit. Authentic Mexican food -- true flavors, nice spice levels, ample portions & attentive service. I don't now know that you can ask for much more in a small town. We'd been there once before but forgot how good it was. After being disappointed by the Mexican restaurant options along I-5, this was a pleasant reminder. Playa Azul is now back on our radar -- we will be back for more tasty meals! read more

Food was fantastic. Service was so so. The guy didn't seem that happy to be taking our order. Kept looking around out the windows. Didn't ask questions - didn't get sour cream but he didn't really come back until we were about done. Wasn't busy, but he must have been worried about somethin else. Otherwise it was great. We did get hot chips right when we sat down and the food came out in like 5 minutes after we ordered. Was delish. I was out of my element - completely - and trying not to look like "city girl meets the one-street town and goes out of her mind". I was in Kalama visiting a cousin and desperately needed to get out of her apartment before I really did lose my mind. I saw Playa Azul across the street and figured some tequila would help my stir-crazy mindset. I wasn't expecting much, but Playa Azul was actually better than expected. It's small and the locals did give me a "who the hell are you?" look, but luckily my cousin and her husband had been there numerous times and I wasn't given a second glance. The margaritas were GOOD. I was pretty impressed. Usually the Border Cafe back home makes my fav melon margarita - but Play Azul came pretty damn close. The nachos with 3 salsa and guacamole were yummy. The entrees were just ok (when compared to places back home). I had the steak fajitas and it came with rice, beans, guac & sour cream. The rice wasn't as good as I'ld hoped but I was so hungry and the tequila was kicking in so I didn't care much. If this restaurant were back home, I probably would have given it 2 stars food-wise, but the drinks and service were great. The unfortunate part - I had to get my drink & food on by 9:30PM on a Saturday night. My sojourn at Playa Azul ended too soon and it was back to reality in Kalama - although it certainly is a pretty place to visit. read more

We stopped in here for lunch while passing through. Looked a tad run down from the outside, and like it was a bar. You do enter through the bar from the street - but they have restaurant seating in the back! We were very pleased with our meal. Portions were HUGE. We got the super burrito - chicken. Easily fed both of us! The chips were warm and crispy.. salsa was okay. Not a lot of flavor, and pretty runny? Very mild. All and all we had a good dining experience and will definitely return if we're ever in BFE again. :) read more

This place is fantastic if you are craving Mexican food. The service is friendly and fast, drinks are good, the free chips are served with two different types of salsa. We eat here at least once a month. They had great specials for Cinco do Mayo, they have a full bar with seating separate from the restaurant side in case you want to escape the noise of babies (no offense to the babies!). This is my favorite Mexican restraunt in the area!!!! I've never been not satisfied with the food here something for everybody here and great drinks try a margarita either on the rocks or blended. When we moved here we went here for lunch. Wow it was great and the manager once I told him about my food allergies to tomatoes give me recommendations and offered to create something. I've been back many times and now the staff know me so they will tell me I can't have something because it may have been marinated in tomato. My favorite Mexican restaurant! The Pollo la crema is different than other restaurants but generous in chicken, creamy and flavorful. The Pico de Gallo is also fabulous and the flan. OMG!!! They'll make whatever you ask for, but they have a Campachana that is not listed on the menu. I prefer mine chilled with hot sauce. Absolutely fabulous and very friendly staff! read more

My rating is on the food. It would get a zero if it was the waiter!! He was awful. He acted like we were bothering him. I my self am a waitress and I judge hard. I will never go there again. He didn't smile, he was just cold as hell. The bartender she was awesome!! The bus lady was very helpful. She tried so hard. I wish the tip went to the Bartender and the bus woman. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant. I've gone for years & they have never let me down, the food is consistently great & the prices are fair. It's always clean & the homemade salsa is to die for, I seriously order a huge side every time I order from them & they still make sure to put in the complimentary bag of chips with little containers of both green & red salsa with my order. My son & I both love their enchiladas & order the 3 enchilada meal & they never care when we ask for each one a different meat. The beans are never greasy & so full of flavor & the rice is just fantastic & so fresh tasting. They've had lots of the same staff for years & are always so friendly to us even now when all we can do is pop in & out to pick up our order. I highly recommend this place, even if you don't necessarily love Mexican food I guarantee there is something on the menu you will love. I recommend the New York Ranchero, of course the enchiladas & the shrimp quesadillas, all the quesadillas are great but they never overcook the shrimp & the vegetables are beautiful & bright with just the right amount of bite so it pairs beautifully with the fluffy warm tortillas which they bring to you in small amounts so they stay warm & fresh. I haven't had a bad entree yet: chile rellano, burrito, tacos, carne asada. It was all excellent. The servings are large, so don't over order. Service was odd from the start. Felt like a total inconvenience the entire time. That being said, the tacos were decent. Not terrible, but not the best we've had either. Chips were fresh with 2 kinds of salsa, we had to request bean dip (um, our toddler doesn't eat salsa yet) and after an eye roll by the waiter, the hostess brought it. Chicken ranchero was fantastic. I would go back just for that dish and maybe try ordering to go next time. If I factored in service it would be 3 stars, hoping it was just an off day. read more

Random discovery worked out great! Very good food for a small, small town place.... good drinks and food at a very resonable price, and huge portions! I'm the type of person to eat all my food no matter what and usually don't have a problem, but it was a challenge - even after spending a day hiking and driving around Mt. Rainier with no lunch!
