We were received right away by the all too friendly staff and volunteers at the Beautiful Historic Rabb Plantation House. It's such a marvel of how well this 1892 Plantation Home has been restored and preserved. Walking through those doors you truly step back into time. The location: right on the most Southern Point in all the country. Sabal Palm Sanctuary literally lies against the southernmost point of the US-Mexico Border, along the Rio Grande. It was established to preserve one of the last vestige of original Sabal Palm forest in the U.S. In this endeavor, over the years, it now showcases what the land of this sub-tropical area would look like as if untouched by the hands of man and left to mother natures own devices. The result is ASTOUNDING!!! This Sub-Tropical Forest now attracts... hundreds of bird species which makes this a not-to-be-missed destination. Sabal Palms Sanctuary is by far one of the country's premiere birding hot-spot with hundreds of species that migrate through this region every year. We came in for a hike along their shortest trail, which wound through scrub brush, mesquite trees and the overwhelming sound of cicadas. We saw lots of armadillos on our hike, and several strange, menacing looking birds. The park has a nice ranger station with a gift shop where you can rent binoculars and get patches and other gear that you'll need to camp and hike along the park's many trails. Be sure to reserve ahead of time on the website. The park is quiet, other than the insects. When we went, it has hot as heck, and nobody else was on the trails. They do offer a few bird blinds, or places to relax in some shade and observe the birds. There seemed to be a planetarium or telescope or something, but the armadillos were preventing us from investigating this.

Would make for some great road biking. I also saw some signs that said watch out for alligators . I didn't bump into any. Really relaxing trail. If you are in town for business and want to get in some cardio before you head back to your hotel I suggest checking out Thai trail. Not sure how this only has six review. It has many gazebos to picnic in in private and two large one for big party's next to the water. It's clean and spacious. It has a huge waterfall next to a another water feature for the kids to cool off in the valley heat. At night they light up the waterfall and looks beautiful. Access for the day (10-5 when we went) allows you to jump across both buildings and even come back if you need a break for lunch/naps. Saw ages 2-10 running around and having a blast. More mister fans could be placed throughout the zoo. It's so humid and hot that the little shade, along with the sparsely located mister fans throughout the property, isn't sufficient enough during the hotter times of the year. Yes, I have noticed that there are fans and some other locations with smaller patches of canvas shading, but it's not enough; maybe the zoo can look into plants that will provide shade and vine plants that will grow and climb and create shade naturally in time. This location is currently going through a lot of remodeling. A lot of animals were not out. This could be due to the heat and humidity, and also, maybe they got relocated due to the remodeling. Trash. My biggest pet peeve is the trash that's lying around on the ground or an empty soda cup in the sections of the zoo where, before entering the doors, it states "no food or drink allowed." But somehow, while looking at the lionfish and seahorse, I found a kid's cup on the step, empty. I don't understand why people don't just pick up after themselves. I don't care for the zip line, but I get it; it's a tool to draw people into the zoo. I know the zoo is doing everything it can to improve itself, but it also needs to focus on the current exhibits it has, as well as the animals whose enclosures are outdated.
