I was able to get my ticket online. When I showed up for the film, I was surprised to learn that building opened in 1878 and still has so much character. The theater is beautiful and even the lobby and restrooms are unique. All of the staff was helpful and friendly as well. It holds about 900 people, so I imagine it'd be great for a concert as well. I sat 10th row, center and had a perfect view of the screen. The sound was solid as well, but don't expect IMAX or anything like that. I'm glad I popped in. I don't know if I'll ever be in Portsmouth again but if I am, I'd happily stop in again for a show or film.

Hadn't been to a show here in quite a while, so it was time!…read moreOur previous experiences have been attending evening performances, but this time we did a Saturday matinee. We didn't purchase our tickets until the day before, but had no problems getting good seats. We arrived about a half hour early to pick up our tickets at will call and since it was a very cold, windy day didn't want to venture back outside to wait so purchased a glass of wine in the lobby and went into the actual theater to find our seats. Very friendly ushers escorted us to our assigned seats which were in the center with great views of the stage. The theater is small so there are really no bad seats as far as being able to see. Unless you are able to get an aisle seat, you will be very close to your neighbor and don't wear a big bulky coat because you will be very squished trying to keep it on your seat. Leg room isn't great, but not the worse either. Shows are always well performed and the price for tickets is more than reasonable. Beverages and some snacks are available in the lobby and you can take them into the theater. It is a great place to go if you are in the area!

Twice a week in July and August, the Portsmouth Underbelly Tour starts at The Rusty Hammer and winds its way through Portsmouth, exploring the past in a way that's suitable only for adults. The tour is conducted by Hilda and Silas, in costume as a Tavern Wench and a spy. If you're visiting Portsmouth with people from work, realize that this tour is NSFW. You'll visit the locations of old bordellos and eventually conclude the tour at the stone penises of Prescott Park (which each have a name), and you'll love every minute of it. Plenty of parking close to the entrance, a beautiful outside space to sit and wait, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming! The theater space itself is very small, but impressive for what it is, and the seats were much more comfortable than other small theatres I've attended in the area in the past. If I had one very small complaint, it is that Google Maps and Waze both directed us to the wrong place so we had to do a bit of hunting to actually find it- but that isn't the fault of the theatre itself, and it was easily enough resolved with a couple of extra minutes driving around. We will definitely be keeping an eye out to see what's available here in the future!

Restrooms are outside just a short walk from main entrance. Ticket booth center of building on the outside, single window so plan accordingly. There was only one person ahead of me on arrival about 20 minutes prior to the show to pick up my ticket. Very friendly staff, quickly directed to my seat with ease. Seats are a little aged, but this is also a historic place to enjoy shows. Had clear stage with single level angled seating arrangement. Concessions had a good little variety of drinks and snacks to choose from (no cash, card only). Glad I was able to catch a show in this historic venue!

This is a great little venue that is now a family must "go to" when we make our annual trip to the area. As an added bonus, you meet the friendliest people. This year after the show, our car battery died and we were stuck in the parking lot. Without asking, the staff at the theatre volunteered if they could help as well as at least four cars. Not something I am used to where I come from. Looking forward to the 2014 season.

Took a drive up this past weekend for the Disney After Dark Burlesque show. It's a classic old…read moreschool theatre tucked in the downtown area of Dover. The facility and property has been well maintained. The new ownership and staff working were very outgoing and kind and helpful. I think the lady serving the liquor was part of the ownership or management. Very nice and welcoming. They are going to be showing Hocus Pocus, classic 90s Halloween film this season. Along w Rocky Horror Picture show and other classics from the golden era of film. Horror movies like Halloween or Friday the 13th would be great as well. It's a great and perfect throwback to yesteryear with the layout and how they do things. The owner said they do trivia and Cuban dance lessons among other fun events there. It's really a great find and I wish more towns had these small local joints where it's intimate and fun and a great experience. The burlesque show was awesome. All the woman were attractive and the show was great. My first ever. Looking forward to my next visit at the Strand. A great spot when in Dover to visit.
