The location is an adults only YMCA and caters to the active seniors community. I've only visited one occasion thus far to check it out and I (mid 40's) was on the youthful side. The facility is in the excellently refurbished West Bend Company factory. There's a nearby coffee shop for the post workout and/or Tochi Ramen. There are plenty of workout machines and free weights in a comfortable atmosphere. The locker rooms are spacious & maintained nicely. Unlike the main Y branch you do need to provide your own lock, but with the age of the clientele I don't envision theft from lockers is much of a thing here. The shower stalls provide about twice the space in comparison to the main Y branch. The facility offers a sauna in the locker room. There is no pool or whirlpool. I hope a whirlpool is considered in any future expansion as I think it would fit in well with the adults only theme. The facility offers programming similar to the main Y branch, albeit in a smaller scale. A great downtown location and West Bend is lucky to be home to two YMCA facilities.

Our daughter has had some challenging behaviors, which we openly acknowledged and were eager to partner on. However, rather than taking a proactive, skill-building approach, the response often felt reactive. Instead of working with her to understand and address the underlying causes of her behavior, the approach focused on managing the situation in the moment and the bad behavior (which wasn't the root cause) --ultimately resulting in her being sent home. What was most difficult is that we did not feel there was a consistent effort to help her build the skills needed to navigate her challenges. We were hoping for collaboration, strategies, and guidance aligned with Montessori principles of supporting the whole child. We understand that supporting children with behavioral needs can be complex, and we truly value educators. However, families need a partnership--one that focuses not just on behavior, but on development, growth, and problem-solving. I share this feedback in the hope that the school can reflect on how to better support children with diverse needs in a more proactive and skill-building way. These are still good kids having a hard time and don't deserve to be sent away during these tough times. They deserve connection and care.

If you are wondering what that is, please look that up and know that this business is set up to provide education that aligns with the Montessori standards. That being said, I can continue to the nitty gritty. Montessori education is wonderful and may appear disorganized to some when in reality it is actually very well planned by a teacher knowledgable in this unique style of learning. The teachers here that I have met seem very nice and have wonderfully run classrooms. However, I have found that in winter, they hardly ever let the kids out. I can whole-heartedly understand the difficulty of suiting up children for winter and playing in the snow when they are so small. Half of recess time is wasted just getting some kids ready. But I do think fresh air is important and explorative free play is essential to the Montessori way. Why would you not want children to experience outdoor play at a time that is so crucial to their development (see Richard Louv's book, "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder"). Also, the blonde woman with little to no makeup I see in the afternoons who watches the door and the group play area can be awful. Not to me, but to the kids she's watching. She outright yells at them even when I'm right in the room! Sometimes she says things that are rude or put them down publically. These are children who are probably only about three years old! This is terrible! I hate listening to her while I wait for the child I pick up to get everything from her cubby. This place, like many daycares, is a bit too small for the number of children who attend. I understand good business, but I also know a thing or two about children, development, and education, and I would say that should take priority over business. Too many daycares have their heart in the wrong place. If you don't value kids, don't create a business meant to support and develop them when it really only edifies you. Anyway, that's my rant. If I were looking for childcare in the area, I would avoid this place, but still find another Montessori style education for my child.

Joy Cleaners has been one of the best. I came in after a week worth of laundry with a flight the next morning. They were kind enough to have my laundry done the next day so I could make my flight, which is normally out of the question for them because of the high volume they handle. I was genuinely grateful they made it happen. I also want to add this: I have had some horrible experiences at other places where my clothing came back forever damaged, shrunk, stained, or treated like it did not matter. That did not happen here. Everything came back clean, folded, and handled with care, and it felt good coming back home to clothes that still looked like mine. On top of that, I was glad to support a local family business that clearly takes pride in their work. If you value good service and careful handling, in my humble opinion, Joy Cleaners is worth it.

They always deliver to me so I seldom get to interact with anyone from the company, but when I have, it's always been a good exchange. (Propane, bottles, tanks. . ."exchange", get it? Never mind.) Today, a friend of mine wanted to refill the tanks on his portable house for an upcoming trip to Upnorth. He usually has the tanks filled at his regular campground but that's not his destination. He was headed to a different vendor was across the next county. I suggested Boehlke Bottled Gas instead so off we went. We checked in at the office and were directed to the dock, right next to the giant tank that also acts as a billboard on Wisconsin 60. A friendly technician met us and measured the remaining gas in the tanks. We found out the tanks needed to be certified, which was handled as they were refilled. Topped off, actually.
