I just moved to Burlington in February from Pittsboro. Although not that far away, I thought I'd feel better moving to a vet closer to my new home. I went to one other veterinarian that was very well rated here on Yelp, a few weeks after arriving and the first thing they informed me of is that they do "yearly dentals." That is an automatic alarm to me, as that is one of the most expensive non-invasive treatments and it just screams to me that they are all about making money. Needless to say, I started my search again. Yesterday, I visited Plaza Veterinary Hospital's Dr. Morgan Thomas and I'm pleased to say, I found my new vet! They were very nice and seem to really care about patients and not just money. I called to make what would have been my first appointment today, following the closing (and recommendation) of my previous vet, Alamance Veterinary Hospital. The receptionist I spoke with was abrupt, bordering on rude, each of the three times I spoke with her. After the second call, when she did not acknowledge my "thank you" at the end, and instead simply hung up on me, I decided that Plaza Vet will not be the place I take my pets. Dr Wicker is the best, she has been taking care of my babies for a long time now. Last year my baby girl Bella Sue had to have heart worm treatments. The staff was very patient with me when it came time to leave my girl, I was very upset. They would call the next day to check up on my baby. This year Dr Wicker seen my girl, ran some test gave her shots. Called the next day with results, and the day after that to check up on Bella Sue. Live on a very tite budget and was told cat absolutley had to have dental because of 2 rotten teeth infected. Wen other vet did it in same practice was told it was good i did it but there were no bad teeth. Furious. It took me 4 months to save the money out of my tite budget. My regular vet had closed completely and before I could find another vet, my 15 year old dog was in pain and needed to be seen right away. I had previously checked the reviews and was planning see if I could start taking my pets to Plaza. I called first thing in the morning and they were able to work him in though he was not an established patient They were amazing with my dog and told my husband that he had a pinched nerve (which he had once before) and gave him the necessary medication. The entire staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Truly outstanding service and I cannot say enough about the entire experience! I can honestly say this is a place that 100% about money and not the animals(as most). They denied my dog medicine until his yearly KNOWING he was in pain. So much pain he has scars from scratching. I could never get the vet on the phone and was told multiple days after requesting a call that she would call but she NEVER did. They gave me the wrong meds for my pup and still charged me. After being fed up I gave them the meds back, got my paperwork and told them I'm never coming back. If you want a vet who cares about your pet, I'd find another place. read more

I want to say I absolutely adore Dr. Wicker and some of the staff at Plaza, but I am a retiree with a limited income and tell EVERYBODY I cannot afford a lot because I'm not a rich person. And let me add that the day this incident occurred, my little Yorkie, was in dire straits. In fact, I had him euthanized last Saturday, 7/24/21, because I thought he wouldn't make it until he could see a specialist at the emergency vet on Monday and I did not want him to die alone in a strange place. Let me add also that I have spent, since 5/3/21 until 7/22/21, $532. and some change on both of my dogs for both medical treatment and special food for the Yorkie for his kidney disease and had other unexpected expenses as well. I also want to mention that I had come from another vet in Burlington because the drops for my Yorkie was the same price for a 5 ml bottle as it was for a 10 ml bottle ($17.45) and then, after coming to Plaza, I was charged $29.30 for a 5 ml bottle so I asked that my prescriptions be forwarded to PetRX at Walmart. Saturday, the 24th, the day Huck got very sick and vomited up blood and blood clots, I called Plaza and asked if Dr. Wicker was there. I will admit I was upset because just two days earlier I paid $80.68 for a sick dog visit and an ointment for my other dog, and will also say Dr. Thomas did give me some Carprofen that had been donated to them (which I appreciated and planned to donate what meds I had left of Huck's, but have now, of course, changed my mind). I did say I could not spend a lot of money because of the $87.34 (which included a couple of cans of prescription renal support food for Huck). I do not remember "screaming," but will admit I was upset and worried what the cost would be. The woman talked to Dr. Thomas and said he (Huck) needed to be monitored and so I needed to take him to an emergency vet and the one in Burlington did not open until noon (it was about 9:30 at this time) and said there was an ER vet in both Greensboro and Durham (which is where I ultimately took him...and told that vet that I wasn't a rich person). And I specifically remember thanking the woman before I hung up. Did not curse her, but yes, upset. I had a very sick, dying dog. So when I tried to get more Carprofen for Bella through PetRx, they would not give her a refill, so I called today and was given a dressing down by Aaron Clark for "screaming at the receptionist," and "they did not appreciate it," and that Dr. Thomas would give Bella one more refill and then we were going to part company and they would get the records ready. That they had not charged her for examinations on "numerous occasions in over a year," (Bella is not nearly as sickly as Huck was and had only gone there for her anal glands to be internally cleaned out and to my memory and knowledge had only two office visits for skin tags, the latest being on 7/22/21 and the one prior in 2/2021). He just kept repeating that I "screamed" at the receptionist and they did not appreciate it. And I don't appreciate one of her staff people waiting for me to call to dress me down. And Dr. Thomas only refilling the Carprofen for 15 pills (although her prescription is for 1 caplet every 12 hours) I'm sure was because she was told I screamed at the receptionist. I contend I did not. But even if I did sound gruff, which that I'm sure I will admit; I was worried both for my dog and for what it was going to cost, but I think Dr. Thomas and Mr. Clark acted very unprofessionally and Bella has not been there for office visits on "numerous occasions," just to see a tech for her glands. So yeah, I know my dogs did receive good care there, but I believe as a vet who is also the owner, sometimes you have a financial interest and it can get in the way. But in all transactions with Plaza, money has gone from my pocket into theirs, not the other way around, so not going to be talked to in that way by an employee (and it hasn't been the first time. Something tells me there's a drama queen in there who likes to stir the pot), and I still am not sure what I am going to do about this situation. I called back and asked them (politely by the way) to please have Dr. Thomas call me because I did not appreciate the way Aaron spoke to me (and you know, she may own the place, but I'm not in her or Aaron's employ), but she hasn't called back. Didn't appreciate Aaron total disregard when I told him Huck had been euthanized either; no empathy or sympathy. The only concern was that I screamed -- again that I contend I did not do -- at the receptionist. And I know Plaza has gotten some great reviews and I would give a very glowing review for Dr. Wicker and I believe Dr. Thomas provides excellent care, but nah, you don't talk to people like you own them. You may own Plaza Veterinary, but you don't own or employ me and I don't appreciate you having your staff talk to me like you do. Pam F. read more

There assistants as Amelia and William and Bonnie know their stuff and are courteous. The others whose names elude me are good too. The new vets as well as DR. WHITED (floating specialist) have provided numerous services to me. I bring show dogs, stray dogs and lots of feral cats in for care. Both of my animals have been coming to the Plaza Vet. Clinic for 8 years. One of my dogs developed cancer and because of the attention to detail that the vets and their assistance gave my dog T Bone it was noticed early and after having to have 3 surgeries he is currently healthy and happy. I would never change vets or clinic. It my believe that they have my dogs health first and far most not just trying to sell me products that my dogs really do not need. I enjoy taking my dogs there for care as I can rest assured that the Vet there takes notice of all my dog not just the parts that I can see. This vet is a class act! The older gentleman vet that is here (sorry I don't remember his name) is very genuine and helpful. We brought our "baby" in here and he informed us she has cancer. We are devastated and he, unlike many other places, had no interest in doing unnecessary tests that would cost us a lot of money just to get the same conclusion. Extremely kind, considerate and concerned staff. If you call in for advice about a non-emergent issue with your pet, the doctor as well as the staff are always happy to help you. It's not like calling other veterinary clinics where the doctors/staff always say "We can't help you over the phone....you will have to bring your pet in for a clinic visit." Granted, there are times when a clinic visit is the only option, but for the "little things" it's great to have a veterinarian that will help you out without just going for the $$$. read more

Plaza Vet use to be the best vet in Burlington. No more! Since the new vets took over the service has plummeted. Front desk staff is rude. They advertise nearly weekly in the paper seeking new customers. There is a reason for that... When established customers call for an appointment they are told none exist. I have taken my dogs to Bainfield at Petsmart for the past 4 appointments because Plaza, the animals vet, cannot see them. The new vets have increased the prices and lowered the value of service. I would NEVER recommends this vet to anyone. read more

just a heads up not to take your pet to this clinic. the staff is very inexperienced and not very professional. for the third time now i was charged something different i was told. when i go back i was told to come back and wait for someone. they never refunded my money and i am out of 65 dollars and the visit should have been 38 as i was told. i also told them specifically i did not want a certain thing done and they did it anyways. when i go back to ask why and demand a refund i am the one who is deemed as rude. the one time before i was told they had to do an x-ray on my cat. i go to pay and there is two separate x-rays on the bill. i asked what is this she said oh i had to do another one while i was back there. well tell me you are before u do. she took it off. another time i asked if there is a fee to keep my pet during day as you do test and they said no. when i get bill it said visit fee on it. they took it off.. they tried to give my cat antibiotics for something without knowing if she needed it. i care about my pets i don't give them meds unless i know they need it. they are not test subjects. i am taking my business else where and you guys should too.. read more

Took a cat here for a large tumor on his hip. Turned out to be a vaccine related cancer. They scheduled him for surgery to remove the tumor. Took him in for the appointment and left him. They called me several times during the day to get authorization for different things and of course I gave it. When they called and said he was ready to be picked up I went straight there and the receptionist handed me a $500 bill which I paid and didn't think anything of it because I know surgery is expensive. She then handed me my cat already in his carrier, no medication no explanation of anything. As I was putting the carrier in my car my kitty turned around and I noticed the tumor was still there. They didn't do any surgery!!!! They never mentioned that the tumor couldn't be removed...nothing. They left me to believe all day they were doing surgery and nothing. Even when I picked him up they never said they couldn't do the surgery they just handed him to me and let me figure it out on my own. read more
