I was disappointed with the cabins NOT having air conditioning. I assumed all cabins had air conditioning, but I was wrong. The cabins were like a sauna, and the one we reserved was facing the sun directly. For the size of the cabin, charging $150/night is NOT worth it. If you paid $100 for the cabin with air conditioning, it is definitely worth the money. I do NOT recommend reserving a cabin without air conditioning. Also, I wish the office stayed open throughout the day. Overall, the place is very nice, and several campsites are super nice. read more

Glorified yard that they pack RVs on top of each other on. No dedicated tailer pull ins, people just start parking every which way. More focused on selling one more spot regardless if it really works for a camper or not. There is not even the perception of privacy here. Any spots on the outer edge at the Highlands is not meant for RV even if they sell it as that, unless you have a tear drop. The staff in the office are super great and nice to deal with but the mgr is not so personable and almost can be rude. They do not allow any outside firewood and charge you $7.50 of 5 sticks of wood, so be prepared for a lot of money in firewood if you come for the weekend. We were on site 311. Was nice and big with a private little area in the back. Bathrooms were campground bathrooms, clean and well maintained. Bring flip flops for the shower. Grounds were beautiful with horses next door and long hilly walking trails. There is a well stocked pond for fishing along with a huge chess game, horse shoes, and volleyball. Very Fun! I had an overall pretty good experience at this campground! There's lots to do including playing basketball, volleyball, and horseshoe! The bathrooms are pretty clean and the general store has everything you'd need for camping. I stayed in one of their cabins which was ok, the door would only close if it was locked and the fire pit was very dirty when I arrived. I was about 15-20 feet away from another couple staying in a tent which was a bit too close for comfort. This was a fine campground (I only stayed for a night) so it was very tolerable. read more

Terrible, dishonest people. They will tell you one thing then steal from your credit card, never sending an email or any explanation for charging saved account numbers; and yes, they do save your credit card - it's a part of their reservation software. So even if they say a slightly late checkout is fine they will wait a week and charge you without your knowledge or consent, the full price of another night for as many sites as you booked. Read the extremely negative reviews after we purchased a one night stay here and were slightly worried, but it honestly wasn't a bad place. Stayed in the Highlands in a tent and it wasn't a fully booked area so we had plenty of space. We didn't like that there was only one bathroom for that whole section of the camping area, but besides that it seemed like a nice camp ground. If you have a camper or are staying more than one night and are willing to pay for a cabin, I think it's a great option. If you have a tent, just bring extra toilet paper and be prepared to either wait for the bathroom to open or to drive to a different bathroom. read more

Wanted to come leave a positive review, as the negative ones almost scared us away. This was a lovely campground set into the native landscape of the area. It's hilly and the amenities are spread out. But the grounds are beautiful, the staff was super friendly and I found it to be on par with many other mom and pop type campgrounds. They have hiking trails in the campground, a fishing pond and it's close to starved rock, Matthiessen and a bunch of cute towns to explore. We stayed over Memorial Day weekend in a small hybrid trailer in a creek side spot and loved our time there. The bathhouse is older, but the plumbing works and the shower was warm! read more

I cannot express enough the horrific stay we had at this campground. When I say mud, just be prepared to be slipping and sliding everywhere because there is more mud than grass. The fly situation is out of hand. If you sit down at any given time, you'll find 20+ on you. The service there, presumably the owner, does not treat this GUESTS as anything but a piggy bank. Be prepared to be nickeled and dimed if you choose to stay here. Rude and zero service. Don't be surprised if you end up with extra fees at the end of your trip. Not family friendly at all. There is small playground there but aside from that, not anything else that's up and running. I am actually pretty surprised at the negative reviews. My party was only myself and my partner. We camped creekside and had a lovely time! We arrived a bit early but they allowed us to check in any way. We had no trouble setting up our tent and buying some supplies from the general store. We had a lovely fire, a restful sleep, and the two occupied sites next to us were pleasant people. We did use the shower and bathroom facilities. While they were not pristine (can outdoor showers really be pristine?) they were clean and nice enough for a campground. We are planning to come back and stay here another time and found it both convenient and enjoyable. read more

ZERO STARS - These campsites are TINY, like hear your neighbor snoring all night tiny. I had cell service the entire drive until we turned into the park, wifi is available for $5 for 24 hours of use. There are a ton of rules too - You can't bring your own wood and it's $7 for a small bundle that burns very quick. If they find out you snuck some in, you get a fine. You can also get a fine for a dog bark, or any other loud noise before 8am or after 10pm. Only one car is allowed per campsite and for a lot of them, you can't pull up to unload so you're walking back and forth with everything. There is only one dumpster area for trash, the bath house is no better than a port a potty with a shower, the fishing pond is just green goo, and the arcade & park do not look like the photos. You can't actually go in the creek, or in any water. There were giant ant hills all over the place and more flys & raccoons than you can imagine. 10/10 would NEVER recommend read more

Double portapotty with no shower for almost 50 sites to share. No gravel pads to park on. Couple next to us got stuck in mudhole. Roads too narrow and one way; safety hazard. We have never been charged before for having 2 tents on one site. Our family uses small tents with 2 of us in each tent (parents and 2 kids). They charged us double for the extra tent so it was $68 a night instead of $34. The people next to us were having a conversation by their fire and I could hear every word as I tried to fall asleep and they weren't even talking loudly. Other places we have camped have had bigger sites and/or sometimes brush to divide the sites but where we camped it was a long narrow space with 3 camp sites packed in next to each other and almost no place to park. There was no privacy and the sites were tiny that whenever someone walked by, it was like they were in our tiny yard. We checked out a little bit late. It was a Sunday afternoon and no one was checking in. We left our site ready for the next guest. The man at the check out register said we would not be charged extra for checking out late, but the next day I got an email that we had been charged for the late check out AND the extra tent (which I didn't know was going to happen). Wow - charging us for checking out late when you said you wouldn't - isn't that lying? - AND double for an extra small tent. Our $34 a night turned into $102. When I saw the charge on my card I called and left a message asking someone to call me. No one did. I then wrote a letter asking for some grace -- meet me in the middle possibly? Honor your word at the desk? I received a 1 line reply that we would be charged extra and that was that. It all leaves me with a bad taste that the place only cares about making money and not about customer relations. Why else would people be camping so close together AND why else would the owners be so inflexible and unworkable with people? They don't seem to care about building a positive reputation or about having repeat customers who feel cared for. read more

Where do I begin with this review? My family and I wanted to visit Starved Rock and they didn't have any spots available for camping, so I found Pleasant Creek in my search. It has 3.6 stars, which isn't awful and I thought we would give it a try. When you arrive it doesn't look too bad, it's clean. One thing you immediately notice is the tent sites that are RIGHT in the entrance. As we were driving to our site I noticed right away that the camp sites are VERY close. The pictures they post online are deceiving and they dont show you how small of a space you get for 44$ a night (which in and of itself it ridiculous)They really REALLY pack them in. Again, this was annoying and would probably bring my review down to a 3.5 just because the atmosphere wasn't what I expected from what I saw on the map. Friday night my husband and I were sitting by our fire when we saw an animal pacing back and forth at the 3 RVs (long term residents). We kind of figured it was a dog and thought maybe it was on a leash because it stayed in that area. We thought it was kind of funny because I kept telling my husband it was a bear and just making up stories. Fast forward to Saturday night and it is confirmed that what we saw that night before was a dog. He was not tied up or anything and kept coming over by our campsite and running in the grass behind us. He would get closer and closer and we would shine a flashlight and that would make him scurry off until he returned. At one point he got really close so my husband stood up and shooed him away. The dog then barked at my husband and ran off. This barking terrified my 2 and 4 year old. Being an adult I could tell that the bark wasn't vicious, but when you're a kid you can't tell that. We had to end our time with them out by the fire and take them in the tent because they were scared. Even this morning it's what they talked about right in the morning. They kept talking about the dog that kept coming over and barked at them. I will admit, at the point the dog barked I got very upset. This is a park that allows dogs, but they are to be with their owner. Here you have a dog running wild, barking at people. I was cool until it barked. I would have gone to the office, but it was closed. In the morning I went to the office to simply let them know they had a dog that was running around that barked at people. You know, so they could keep an eye out so no one gets bitten on their property. The elderly gentleman (and I use that word loosely) was very short and rude. I told him the story and he says "well, I wish you would have told site 147 because they lost their dog" like it was my fault that I didn't tell them. Ummm.. I'm not a dog whisperer so how the heck was I to know whose dog it was? I finish up and he says "well, I don't know what you want ME to do about it!" Well, I didn't want him to DO anything about the dog at that point, I just wanted him to listen. I feel like if more people just listened to people's concerns, the world could be a little better place. I was simply coming to let them know. I didn't want a gift or money or anything. I was calm the entire time and never made mention of NEEDING anything. As a matter of fact, when I entered the store I asked who I would speak to about concerns we had during our stay. I told him I just wanted to let him know that it wasn't an enjoyable experience that my kids couldn't be out by the fire. A simple "I'm sorry that happened to you, thanks for letting us know" would have been plenty sufficient and I would not even be writing this review. I know they won't care about this review. They only care about packing as many people in to a small space as possible. As soon as they get your payment they don't care about your stay. They really just see dollar signs and don't care if people return. Maybe they have enough long term campers to cover their costs, so they don't care about word of mouth. I'm sure it is an enjoyable experience for some, but I would never ever stay here nor recommend it. Wish I would have read the Yelp reviews, they are more in line with what I experienced than the Google reviews. I did end up going to site 147 and letting them know that we had seen their dog the previous two nights and where he liked to hang out. Poor couple had just gotten the dog 5 days before he went missing. I really do hope they find him. And hopefully no one ends up getting bitten if the doggy gets scared or something. read more

Pros: Beautiful area, free coffee Cons: Unpleasant staff, expensive, small campsites, limited/dangerous parking I drove from Kansas to camp here for my best friend's birthday. Due to some car issues, I didn't get into the site until almost 2am. My GPS directed me way past the campsite, and I ended up getting lost, since the signs for the campgrounds were impossible to see in the dark unless you knew where to look for them. Being exhausted from the drive, I greeted my friends and pretty much just crashed in one of their tents. In the morning, my friends told me that when they checked in for me that they were told that I had only paid for one night, even though I had email confirmation that I had paid for two. My friends also said that they were told that there was a 1 tent per site limit. I had seen that there was a 2 adult limit and had planned to let one friend set up her tent on my site, but I still do not remember seeing the tent limit. The sites were crammed very close together, and our parking area had a very steep drop off to the creek area. While were eating breakfast that first morning, a man drove up in a golf cart and asked us if we were the ones "hootin' and hollerin'" all night. We had admitted that we may have made some noise beyond the 10pm quiet time since I had arrived so late. He then told us that if we did it again that night that he would call the police and have us escorted off of the premises. Later that day when I went to use the restroom, there was a sign on the ladies' room saying that it was closed for cleaning. My friend really needed to use the restroom and asked if it was possible to use the restroom real quick. We were told no and that the restrooms needed to be cleaned at some point. We were then lectured on the proper way to position the shower curtains to prevent the restrooms from filling with water, even though neither of us were carrying towels or shower supplies that would give them the impression that we were going to shower. That night, we were very conscientious of the time and made sure that we kept our voices down after 10pm. However a security guard repeatedly approached our campsite to tell us to make sure we kept it down. We were talking and playing Uno, not throwing a rave. At one point, the security guard flat out told us to go to bed. At check out the next morning, the man from the golf cart the first morning was there to check us out. When I had asked about what I was charged since my friends had been told that I would be charged for an extra day, he demanded to know who told us that. He then unpleasantly went on that I had been charged $76 for the two nights and no more. Having no cell service, I could not check my bank account, and he offered no receipt for what I had been charged. We came to this campgrounds, in spite of how expensive it was, to enjoy nature and to celebrate my friend's birthday. However, we did not feel welcome and will be taking our camping trips elsewhere next time. read more

Stayed for 4th of July weekend. My family was watching a movie through a projector outside and at 10pm they told us we had to turn it OFF. It was not loud. No neighbors complained: they came back that night to tell us we had to stop talking. I think a bit of racism was involved because we heard other family's across the campground singing. On the last day they charged us for our dog tent without any warning or anything. They're friendly but unfair. Wouldn't stay here again. read more

We have been camping for several years. Started off tent camping, then a pop-up and now a travel trailer. We will not camp here again. Made reservations in January for 4 sites for camping 4th of July weekend. Paid and received confirmation. Found out, when we called to ask a question on June 29, that they no longer had 2 of our reserved sites available. Thus ensued the most terrible customer service experience I have ever encountered at a campground. They were incredibly rude both over the phone and in person. On top of all of that, the campground itself has very narrow, steep roads. Small and sloped campsites. The fishing pond was covered in algae and looked unfishable. We didn't even try. The women's restroom in the highlands had no running water, soap or hand sanitizer. The tetherball pole had no ball. We were told the dumping pump outs that are advertised on their website were not available. The dump station is up a steep, narrow road. We didn't even attempt to take our camper up there. Drove to the Love's and paid $10 to pump out when we left. Be forewarned! Don't go!! read more

Will Never Camp Here Again. My family has camped at Pleasant Creek Campground for years when the previous owner owned it. Three years ago we started camping again with friends usually reserving 3-4 sites 2 to 3 times a year at Pleasant Creek. On September 5 thru September 8,2019 We camped with two other couples and each of uwere charged a $38 fee for late checkout. Check out was 11:00 and at 11:45 we were charged the fee. Mind you it rained most of the morning! I called to ask about it and left 3 messages and 5days later before I got a call back. I was very polite and the gentleman I finally spoke to said he would talk to the CEO to have the charge removed because the CEO put the $38 charge on at 11:45am. Refund was refused. We are middle aged couples that have never caused any problem anywhere we have stayed and always left the area spotless. This is a terrible way to do business! I will never come back. I would NOT recommend this campground! read more

Our experience at Pleasant Creek Campground was NOT pleasant. We had to ask for a receipt. The synopsis in 2017 RV & Camping Guide Illinois states "140 spacious sites with plenty of room for slide-outs and awnings" yet we were assigned #233, a narrow site on the side of a hill which would require backing up hill and would have been difficult to level the RV. The renovations stopped at improving the roads inside the campground, very rough and narrow in places, with a turn to exit the loop nearly impossible to make without hitting a tree. This turn did damage to our vehicle which will be costly to repair. The young man in the office assured us he had seen the site and thought it was suitable for a 35' fifth wheel. Needless to say, we asked for our money back and did not stay. read more

We had to cancel our reservation 24 hours prior to our 3 day booked stay, plus we were booked into a site without sewer. When we cancelled they didn't charge us the normal 1 night stay for canceling they charged us $114 to cancel (for all three days), and then gave me a gift certificate with restrictions that expires in 3 months and this campground is 4 1/2 hours away from our home. I understand charging a fee to cancel but SERIOUSLY $114, what a nasty way to make money. read more

Do not camp here!!! Way overpriced for the small camping area that you get, no privacy at all, dirty bathrooms and showers, nasty porta potty with no TP. The roads are narrow and one lane, if you have to use the dump station you have to go up a steep hill so good luck. We ran into one pleasant worker there but other then that the people were rude and bothered by you. Ended up staying one of the two nights we booked and then received an email saying we were being charged a clean up fee of $25 when we left the campsite better then when we got there! Do not stay here!!! I should have listened to the other reviews, but I was looking for a place nearby and thought "how bad can it be?"...it's terrible! The sites are all very small, luckily nobody stayed in the site next to us, otherwise they would have set our tent and vehicle on fire. The overall area is very hilly and they basically went thru and put firepits and picnic tables in random spots and call it a campground. Quiet hours are 10-8 and the speed limit is 20 mph, unless you work there. Then you can be as loud as you want and drive your vehicles at any speed. Nothing like waking up to someone cutting rebar at 7 am on Sunday. The final straw for me was our departure. We were leaving at 10 AM on Sunday, while approaching the bridge there was some construction debris laying out. The worker waved me over, and I thought it was just some 2x4's and plywood. Well, underneath was some of the aforementioned rebar and it punctured the sidewall in my tire. I put on the spare tire and went by the front office to let them know about the issue. The guy was very nice and said to let him know about the cost of the tire. I wasn't sure, the truck is 1 month old, said I'd check and get back to them. When I called back to let them know, the older lady was beyond rude. She said that I was lucky that I wasn't given a DUI and that I was driving on the side of the bridge. I reminded her that it was 10 AM on a Sunday, and I had not been drinking. She continued to accuse me of being drunk and driving on the side of the bridge and this was not their fault. So in short, terrible sites, terrible service, and way overpriced. read more

Stayed at this campground for one night to see Starved Rock State Park. Started off as a decent camping trip. The sites are fairly close, but we didn't mind. We stayed in the Highlands. At approximately 3am our neighbors, who we believe to be high on some type of drug, started yelling at each other. At one point, the girl got in her car and backed up, nearly hitting our tent. I had to yell at her to make sure she didn't hit us. Ten minutes went by and she showed up again yelling and screaming. Then the guy got in the car with her and they backed up, and it sounded as if they hit our car. We got out immediately and they claimed they did not hit our car. Since we did not witness it, we let it go, as the car did not have any damage. This all happened between 3am-7am. We called to send a complaint in, and they did absolutely nothing. So we get to pay entirely for a night of almost getting hit by a car and yelling and screaming. They admitted that us paying was unfair, but claimed there really was nothing they could do. I really enjoyed my stay at this campground. I was a tent camper and stayed for a week. I was staying by myself and felt extremely safe. The property is very well kept and I could tell they cleaned the bathrooms everyday. The porto potties seemed to be emptied on mondays so they were pretty full by sunday. I highly recommend calling, as they helped me chose the correct campsite for me. Some of the sites were small for a camper, so I would defiantly call if you have a bigger setup. The store is open on weekends. If you stay though the week, it is not open much, but the workers are on the grounds so I just drove around to find someone. I had a wonderful stay and went to both Starved Rock and Matthesion State Park. read more

I had a Pleasent experience at Pleasent creek campgrounds originally my family was planning on staying at starved rock camp sites but they had no vacancy thank god because if they would of had vacancy's we would have never found Pleasent creek. My kids enjoyed the basket ball court my husband enjoyed the fishing pound and I really liked the fact we were by the showers/bathroom I don't see why all these other reviews are bad it was a nice clean friendly camp site and they had amenities you normally wouldn't get if you were really camping all these people sound like a bunch of cry baby's life is what you make it, my family has beautiful memories of the campground and we will be returning read more

A lesson In hospitality would be a good start. People should be treated like guests. My wife had a meet up late with us due to a business trip. She was told no additional car passes would be issued only one car per site. We had 4 connected sites with plenty of space. The young guy advised my wife her vehicle would be towed if it did not have a pass. I checked if there were other options and he was very smug and down right rude about it. So our second vehicle had to be parked in a lot by the office/store which was very far from our site. The store had food items that expired in June it is now September. A case of water was priced at $15.97. The showers were dirty with moldy shower curtains. The owner was driving around on his golf cart making sure everybody was getting off the property by check out time. We will not be coming back, its too bad this place has very good potential. I mentioned to the young guy you have 5 bad yelp reviews and you will now be getting 6. He shrugged it off and said ok sarcastically. Sorry but attitude is everything. CAMPERS BEWARE! Single lane road up to the dump station, resulted in us waiting (all slides closed and hitches connected) at our site to access the dump before leaving. We had to wait for other campers to finish and come down the hill, because you can not pass. As soon as we could access the road, we left to dump. It had rained all weekend so we were ready to leave. I had paid by debit for 2 sites when making the reservations. Upon arriving home I found that I had been charged ADDITIONAL DAY for BOTH SITES because we were not off the site by 11:00 . WE WERE OFF BY 11:30! I left a message and explained why we had a slight delay and was simply sent a copy of the CHECK OUT rules!!! No refund for the extra charges! I tried a few times to contact the campground, leaving messages but no one would call me back. Forty years camping and have NEVER been treated like that. Sites are on top of each other! Our 2 pull throughs were so close, one of us could not extend the awning. No WIFI, if you didn't park up on the very top of the campground. Never again!!! read more

When I read the one review I found that said the camp sites were on top of each other, I literally had no idea what to expect. But EXPECT the smallest camp site ever! You might think you don't need a lot of room, like I did, but what happens is that everyone is encroaching on your site, if you are last to get there, good luck as to where you will park and it sets a really bad vibe right off the bat with your temporary neighbor campers! The bathrooms/showers were disgusting! So bad that we were warning other campers not even to attempt. The first shower stall was backing up onto my feet, the floors were full of dirt and bugs. I never saw an attendant the entire time we were there or smelled signs of bleach or any cleaning products. The overhead map of the campground does not let you know that the other bathroom is up an extremely steep hill or that some of the campground sites are on steep inclines. The site next to us had a fire pit that was on a 45 degree angle! YES it was that bad! We made the best of our experience and met some reall nice people BUT I would rather sleep at a truck stop (no offense to any truck drivers) than ever stay at Pleasant Creek again. read more
