Had to stop and take a few pictures. The pastor came out and was waving at us. I waved back. It was about 1/2 hr before the services started. I have a feeling I should have stayed. This quaint, one-room country chapel often referred to as The Church Built Around A Rock, is constructed around a granite boulder. This boulder forms a backdrop to the altar of the church. Ashes which are interred inside the boulder are those of Col. Milford Howard, who built the chapel dedicated in 1937, in memory of his wife, Sallie. Most of the materials used in constructing the chapel are local..the huge wooden beams, the stone walls and, of course, the huge granite boulder that makes up the front of the chapel. The Chapel is a quiet, inspirational place...but also a working church, with services held every Sunday, and it is also a popular place for weddings. Take Hwy 89/DeSoto Pkwy northeast of Fort Payne until you've driven through DeSoto State Park, then turn right at the foot of the hill. The chapel is no more than 100 ft on the right side of the road.

I had 4 different people greet me after I'd found my seat, ask my name, and introduce themselves - all in a no-pressure kind of way. The church is small enough that you learn people's names, build relationships, and don't feel lost in the crowd, but large enough that you don't feel like you're being intimidated or judged. There's probably roughly 200 attendees at any given service. There are ministries and small groups for all, ranging from nursery, pre-k, and kids all the way up to youth, college and career, and adult groups. Currently due to COVID, the church has worship services in person at 9:30am and 11am on Sundays, and a live stream is available through the Facebook page for the 9:30am service. The people I've interacted with are genuine, the worship is fantastic, and the leadership and preaching is wonderful as well. The church's beliefs are centered on the Bible, and abides by a "glorify, grow and go" mission. I've made countless friends and people that I call family by dropping by here on a whim a few years ago.

Although this is a large church, it was easy to find connection through the many opportunities to serve the community, the periodic events, and small groups. Also, the teaching of God's word has been dynamic, grounded, and solid among the pastors. The Holy Spirit is present, and at work in the people who serve and attend.

We visited there today (9-5-2021) hoping to find a church we could be part of in the future…read more Sadly, even though the praise & worship was wonderful and the people friendly, we couldn't stand the extreme volume! So very loud it gave me a headache and really hurt my husbands ears (he has tinnitus) to the point that he had to cover his ears with his hands the whole time. Jason Crabb sang and the words were beautiful, but again so horribly loud it was painful. We were hoping to at least enjoy the pastors message but he was so loud it was unbearable and we had to leave. We were told to use earplugs when we were leaving but I have birth defects in my ears and can't and WHY does the service have to be so loud that earplugs are offered or necessary!!!!
