Tell ya what -- We don't mind Mondays...

Point Breeze some call it and it's a quick walk to Plumb Beach -- " hey, look over there, it's Jamaica Bay in all of it's polluted splendor. A 10 minute walk to Coney Island that-A-way and over to your left, Breezy Point, a simple community as seen from the Boogie Down Brooklyn side, a great place to hang -- it'll connect you to the Atlantic Ocean. Doesn't all of what you see floating around you look and sound appetizing for a Sunday swim, just try not to open your mouth or eyes kiddies - people are pathetic with their personal garbage. With switch of the mind flip, It's not unlike the setting for Creepshow (#1) "Something to Tide You Over". Greatest movie ever for a horror loving little child such as I was -- and I was. "Welcome to the beach.... If you don't panic, if you can hold your breath ---- if you can hold your breath" -- "I I I I I I --- CAN HOLD MY BREATH -- FOR A LOOOOOOOONG TIIIIME"!!!.. hahahahahaha.. *****And that's what the polluted and polluters should have a comin' to 'em. ****** Take out what you bring in -- simple and easy as pie and bless your heart for making any effort, the garbage doesn't add up, it subtracts down, just try a little harder each time - you'll be begin to enjoy it and when the big green truck rolls in and takes it all away to a proper facility, the W's (wins) keep stacking because there's no stacking W's when you litter. Roxbury, Fort Tilden, Riis Park are all out there watching me watch them, all well known beach areas in this area and all graveyard quiet, there's nobody else here. It was overcast and grey with air dust or pollution and looked like a combination of dirty cotton and wet sugar. The more I focused upwards, the more hesitant and feeble the very pale blueish grey sky looked -- as if a painter had washed the color off his brush in a huge tub of water and the water only held one drop of a promise. Tall buildings & bright lights is knee jerk NY, I know, but take the B or Q train to Sheepshead Bay and you'll get some quiet time here, at Plumb Beach. It's 4.1 mile drivr from my door for Big Phil and I, so I think I'll be back again as the summer of 2021 quickly comes to an abrupt halt.

Because it's by the side of a highway, you might be turned off, but you shouldn't be. This is a very chill little slice of heaven that you can get to directly from the Belt Parkway. Lots of seaweed, but the bay creates very subdued waves that almost look lake-like.

A Forgotten BEACH from MY CHILDHOOD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My wonderful mom, who recently passed, had taken me here when I was about 5 years of age for a few years. It was an active beach then.... full of Horseshoe Crabs & fish & other creatures that my little brother & I could catch, with a simple bed sheet as a net. The creatures that were caught, we put into a bucket for a short time & watched in amazement...we then released them later. The bucket would get populated with hermit cabs, minnows, snails, jellyfish, & sometimes unusual fish, like needle nose fish. It was a time of wonder & discovery for us. 50 years ago & even now, we saw new immigrants fish a bit with real nets in the waters...but our mom taught us that the water was dirty & the fish were not healthy to eat. I always specialized in creating huge sand castle complexes that looked more like Sci-Fi Cities that I read about in the Children section of the Flatbush Public Library. These became more elaborate as I grew older & once at Jone's Beach what I thought was a "professional" photographer took two pictures, gave one to me. It became a Horseshoe Crab preserve & we were always aware as kids to avoid their prehistoric defenses. They were fascinating creatures, & sometimes they would somehow flop helplessly upside down. The poor things many legs would scramble to right itself, sometimes in vain. We would watch for a time, kind of scared to approach them, but we ultimately helped them out with a long stick. My mom always carried a pic in her wallet of me, fishing with a fake pole, when I was 5, at Plumb Beach. I loved it there so much, as well as, my mom & my brother. I especially loved & adored my mom, who struggled working midnight to morning as a nurse and somehow found the strength to also take us out of our dysfunctional home & malignant father's way....who later became very mentally ill & tried to kill both his sister & my mom. I hated him for how he treated my mom & was terrified of a beating. My mother once wrapped her arms to defend me from his blows & then we ran away for a time to my Grandfather's house for sanctuary. It was not easy, but my mom had a almost superhuman strength to raise us, basically by herself. Too bad, 1/2 Century later it is almost all but forgotten. The active beach building which used to have refreshments & bathrooms, has been long neglected & is a ruin now. I did take some pics of one of the remaining signs that have pics & names of some of the local denizens. Based on the few people & cars on a weekend, & the few Yelp reviews....as well as.. the abandoned look of the Beach, it is well past it's prime....and it still reflects me. It reflected me as a young boy, all vigorous & future looking, back when I was 5 years of age. Now, it reflects me as well, as I have past my prime at over 55 year of age, and now try to accept that the ruin of my body spells a likely early end to me. I have now have to struggle day by day, minute by minute toward some sort of retirement. Maybe one day, I will like some of my ashes throw into the waters of Plumb Beach. I will upload the pic & the pics from over 1/2 century later on this long forgotten & neglected beach from my childhood, as well as, the pic from when I "fished" there as a joyful 5 year old.

I'm writing this review in the dead of Winter to remind myself that there will be warmer days ahead. Read a Yelper's review and decided to check this beach out. Beach is located off the beaten path of the Belt Parkway; if you missed it, you missed it. I decided to take the bike path along Emmons Avenue and just walk there. Beach itself is more of a little oasis, overlooking Kingsborough College and the Rockaways on the other end. I don't know if this beach is part of the city beaches as it's not kept clean, and there's no bathrooms. My coworker told me that this beach was once a "rendezvous" point for other things (wink). Overall, this little beach is the perfect getaway from the city without really traveling too far. The potter-potty is located at the entrance if you really need to go.

I was introduced to this warm sandy beach by a very special friend. It's simply the perfect place to unwind and checkout from reality while taking In the beautiful picturesque scenery. This beach is so peaceful, you'll feel like you're somewhere abroad not in NY. It's a great spot for a picnic with a small group of friends or a romantic date with that special someone. I've even seen people having bonfires here at night. The beach is situated by Belt Parkway, and the parking lot looks like a rest stop. It's not crowded at all and feels ultra private. Im so happy my friend introduced me to this charming Brooklyn gem, it's so serene.

This Kiteboarding spot is quite good. Definitely my go-to as it is not too far from downtown Manhattan. One other cool thing is the separation between newbies and advanced riders, which makes it a lot easier to learn and improve. Unfortunately, if using the subway, you won't be able to go there without a 10 dollars cab ride.

Drove here on a sunny May 2016 afternoon with my fiancée and our dog. Went here because dogs are allowed year round, and the local beaches were already closed to dogs. Seemed ok for a while, We did notice a lot of broken glass in the sand, and trash here and there. This place smells a little like a sewer...We hiked towards the point and started noticing nude 50+ year old male couples disappearing into the dunes, and oddly enough getting into the freezing water. On the way in the noticed a pirate flag /red flag. I later learned this flag combo is a universal nude beach symbol. If you're not into that, stick to the western side of the beach.

And I stumbled upon Urban Paddle and booked it for a 9am adventure. We lucked out that every variable and condition was ideal: weather, tide, calm water, almost no other boat-related traffic. We're a party of 7. The 'Urban Crew' numbered at 5. We were spoiled from start to finish with a group of really cool and helpful workers that were informative, fun, professional and made sure we were always safe and engaged the entire hour. (Make sure to watch their 6-minute YouTube video ahead of time so you know all about the proper paddling/rowing techniques when it comes time to hit the water.) The 'Urban Crew' were also invaluable because the owner was constantly taking pictures and videos and at the end airdropped them to us which was a nice 'cherry on top' since you can't really snap pictures for big chunks of the time when you're on the water. Is it expensive for an hour? No doubt. Did everyone absolutely love kayaking and getting to see everything from the Colgate clock to the back of the Statue of Liberty's head to the NYC skyline, not to mention all of the stunning yachts all docked and looking completely out of my price-range? Of course. Was it the funniest thing to see my mother-in-law somehow leaning back in her kayak like she was on a hammock while the father-in-law did all the hard work? Yup. (Did a cranky security guard try her best to be a stick in the mud regarding confusion over some parking-related issues when we were about to leave? Oh yeah.) I'd suggest clothing/footwear that you don't mind getting wet as well as sunglasses and sunblock (that sun is no joke bouncing off the water). Highly recommended. (The Mrs. is already plotting when to go back and I think she's even pricing kayaks to buy with that stimulus check that's burning a hole in her wallet.)

Head to the website, book the date & time you want and you're done. www.watergapadventure.com/river-trips A few things worth noting: They offer multiple trip lengths. The standard 4-, 6- and 10-mile trip (Smithfield to Portland) are all booked generically and then when you get there you tell them what you want to do. All pricing is the same which believe me compared to others companies, that's very different - in a good way. They do offer two other longer trips but those require calls to the main office I assume to assess river conditions; your own competency and shuttle availability. The main office in Delaware Water Gap is very easy to find and there was plenty of parking on a quiet post-Labor Day Monday. You check in, you're handed a laminated map, life jacket and given a brief route explanation and then you're off in the van. One problem arose and it was kind of a PIA but it was worked around. Most companies have different types/sizes/models of kayaks and quite often, will ask you what you prefer. Not here. When we left the office, the guy driving didn't say a word to me until we get to Smithfield Beach to unload. He had a few kayaks pre-loaded in the carrier but definitely did not look at them before we left. One of them had a broken foot pedal that he said couldn't be used, another was very much designed for a smaller individual (i.e. if you're taller and/or taller & larger it ain't happening safely) which only left two tandem models. Using a tandem as a single individual is not the end of the world but especially when the seats are still left in the two person configuration (i.e. one front and one back versus the rear one being placed more towards the middle), it's a PIA to maneuver the craft and you are paddling harder to get the job done compared to a single. The scenery along the route was decent. You could see a bit of the Shawnee Resort and Golf Course, an old stone bridge abutment in the middle of the river, under and along 80 and then when you get into the Water Gap itself with the high cliff sides. Very picturesque. Once you go under the old train viaduct in Portland, you give the office a call for the shuttle to meet you at the out point which is at the Portland Pedestrian Bridge. The whole experience was about four hours door to door to cover the ten miles on the water plus the shuttle to & from the pick up and drop off points. Lots of nice scenery, due to the low water level there wasn't much in the way of current except for the area around viaduqt in Portland and even that wasn't bad. I'm not a big fan of the equipment here but I wouldn't let that deter me from coming back in the future for one of their northern longer trips.

I came in from Manhattan, and took the PATH to get back home. The walk from the station to Pier 13 isn't short, so I can see why Google Maps suggests the bus to get to Pier 13. Personally I plan to snag a ride share from the station to Pier 13 in the future since I run late to most things and the walk took a while. Although I've been paddle boarding before, this class highlighted that I had never been taught some paddle boarding basics during my prior adventures. We hung out pretty close to the docks most of the time because the water was so choppy that day, but I believe the instructors said under better conditions the class sometimes ventured further out. For those of you wondering about how clean the water is - I personally did not mind falling in and was splashing my hair with the water to cool down as needed. The water felt fairly clean, and was "brackish," as the instructors liked to say. The instructors for this class were great, namely Ben (I believe that was his name anyway). He was fun, easy to talk to, and 100% willing to jump into the water to demonstrate re-mounting the board for people that had fallen. They cover how to get onto your board from the dock, how to hold your paddle, which parts of your body you should be engaging to paddle, paddling while kneeling, paddling while standing, tips on steadying yourself, and re-mounting the board. By the end of the hour I felt way more confident, and was interested in signing up for their other classes where you get a guided tour of the nearby areas. There was mention of paddling to an island nearby for one of those classes. Would highly recommend this as a weekend activity. There's plenty to eat and drink on the piers/walkways around there after you get done.

Nothing notable to report but not overwhelmingly great either. The last time I went with the Boy Scouts was one of the worst weekends of my life. There was some river guide who named himself "zombie". He has the worst chip on this shoulder ever. First, he got nearly naked on the bus clearly wanting to show off all his tattoos. Inappropriate in front of a bunch of kids. If he was discreet then fine. He was showboating and it was gross. Then while on the river, I splashed with a paddle. It is indeed against the rules and I was wrong for that. However I knew I messed up the second I did it. A reminder would have been sufficient. Oh no. Zombie came over immediately and berated me loudly in front of everyone (including the kids). Yikes. I said "understood, I'm sorry". He then continued saying he was "gonna hike me out of 'his' trip" if he saw it again. What? He was going to evict me from the boat in the middle of nowhere and walk me home? Alone? What the hell is wrong with this guy? I don't care how capable or good of a river guide he is. If he's going to talk to customers who paid for the trip like garbage, then he doesn't belong there (especially around kids). Major jerk. Then we camped there overnight. Some camp site decided to have a rager party. Like thumping music turned up to full volume that could be heard for miles. No one came to quiet them down. At midnight I had to walk over myself and ask if they could please let us sleep. They said no and it kept going. I called the campsite phone # and got a voicemail. No one was there to help. Needless to say we didn't sleep at all. Just a generally unpleasant experience. You need to get rid of this zombie person. You can't call yourself "zombie" then demand to be taken seriously. Give me a break. You need someone who can patrol the campsite and keep order and the campers safe. Don't go here and waste your money.
