Pocahontas State Park offers over 90 miles of trails, a large lake system, and a well-maintained campground. Time your hike for lunch at Swift Creek Reservoir. You might spot hawks, eagles, or herons. In spring, the path leaving the reservoir is often covered in tiny frogs. They have no self-preservation so watch your step. The park hosts concerts at its amphitheater, including touring acts like Dark Star Orchestra. Snakes are common, especially near water. They're native, and you're trespassing so leave them be. Or text a picture to the VA Snake Hotline (804) 617-7086 to confirm that you don't need to freak out. As for the paw prints in the mud: I've seen them. They look like mountain lion tracks. Went to meet friends for surprise bday get together for their Mom. Which was awesome once everyone showed up. How ever, the state of VA needs to invest in bigger signs with a bit more clarification of where things are. Basically I had to go back to main entrance and make turn just to figure out where I needed to go, but funny thing is I was the first person to show up at the shelter . With spring around the corner, I am enjoying finding nature spots to explore with these bursts of warm weather. My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once. read more

We love coming to Pocahontas State Park. The entry fee is seven dollars. You have so many trails, cabins, and of course campsites the leaves were beautiful this time of year. We particularly liked this trail for our E bikes. Fendley Station Trail. We combined this trail with a few others. Very nice campground. We are mtb bikers and the mtb trails are a huge bonus! We had spot 43 and it was literally at the head of a mtb trail. Pros - * spacious spots with W/E * leveled tent spot included on site * fire wood huts placed around park * clean bath house * MTB trails for every level rider * swimming lake/canoeing/paddle boats/huge pool including children's splash pad * gift store in front and small camp store in campground * picnic table and fire ring with grill at each site. * well shaded camping spots * hiking trails * camping spots were concrete or gravel * pet friendly Cons - * MTB signage was a little confusing * only one laundry facility * only playground was closed * ladies bathroom had two stalls with poo that looked like it was there for a few days. Not sure how often the bathrooms are cleaned, but the toilet just needed flushing. I flushed the toilets ‍ In conclusion, it was a really nice campground. Grounds were immaculate and staff were friendly. It poured with rain all night and where we were wasn't flooded at all. Nice place to camp. read more

We visited with extended family and had fun hiking around the lake and visiting the nature center. The nature center has some interactive exhibits and viewing exhibits of reptiles. The park is very large and has a substantial mountain biking friendly area. Although we didn't visit most of the park, there are plenty of other amenities here including camping. Pocahontas State Park is beautiful. The largest State Park in VA with 7919 acres. I drove to tje back where the pool is. Pool is a light word for what I saw. They had kid sprinklers and as well as large slides! Everyone seemed to be having a good time. - I took a hike across the river bridge. This was a terrific trail, but it was also extreme weather this week and though I always carry too much water, today was not enough. I had drank it all with one mile left to go and it. Was. Hot. Out. Here!!! I was so happy to see that bridge. (my starting point). I was incredibly worn out and sweating so hard. I went up the hill to the car and used the water fountain to pour water all over my head. Anyway it's a Fabulous Park with, flushing toilets, water fountains and kayaks. The Swift Creek is really pretty with its twists and turns and lillypads and wildlife. I saw a blue heron. Deer, turtles, tons of squirrels and skins. Many signs of Beavers. What a great day at this VA State Park. I highly recommend it. read more

After being told by another facility that the space we had reserved was booked by someone else, we looked to Pocahontas as the location for our son's graduation celebration. Making a reservation for one of the picnic areas was simple. We arrived and the space was clean. The shading was such that even on a warm June day, it was bearable. Parking was only steps away from the area and there was sufficient space between the areas that even on a busy Saturday, there was no noise that was discernible . There are a couple of sizes offered and we felt they were both reasonable in price. Depending upon the event type, would absolutely consider using this great resource again! read more

In the past month we have been to Pocahontas State Park two times and hiked about 9 miles worth of trails. It is such a beautiful and well taken care of park. We have been able to share it with our friends who have come for a short weekend trip during COVID. There is plenty of parking at all of the trailheads. We enjoy the Beaver Lake Trail and the Troopers Tribute Loop. Also there are a lot of benches to set your phone up for timed group photos! Always fun to have a mini-photo shoot! read more

This is a pretty nice State Park for camping. They have cabin rentals, yurt rentals, RV spots and tent sites. Something for everyone. It's a fantastic location for quiet and dark skies. The spots aren't so close as to feel jammed in like some other state parks can be. I spent a couple of weeks there recently while in town attending to business and visiting family. Everything was as expected except: They really need to do something about their reservation system. I was there 12 nights and I had to move among three different sites. In one instance the site I had to move from stayed vacant for the remainder of my stay. It's apparent that many sites are reserved on Friday and Saturday nights "on contingency" and the campers never show up. Having to move sites allowed me to dump the tanks in my RV, as there is no sewer hookup at any of the camp sites. The problem I ran into was that, on a Sunday around midday with all the check-outs and check-ins occurring, the dump station (there are two connections) both were full to overflowing. I mean, poop water running across the pavement overflowing. I mentioned this to one of the park staff and was told, "Yeah, that happens a lot at the end of a weekend." You'd think they could fix that! We'll likely stay here again. It's convenient for us to visit friends and family. I hope they can get their dump station problems sorted out by the time I come back! read more

We had so much fun at Pocahontas State Park. We hiked the beaver trail and it was beautiful in the morning. It was an easy trek and we got amazing views of the lake while seeing lots of baby frogs hopping along the trail. We stopped at the visitor center near the trail afterward and we're so glad we did. The staff were so friendly and they shared so much knowledge with us about the wildlife at the park. We're grown women but we felt like kids on a field trip again, it was the best feeling. The intern working introduced us to Cornflake the albino cornsnake and Houdini the black rat snake who were both equally terrifying and adorable. The head ranger was also so nice letting us in on all the great information about the park. We definitely will go back again to enjoy more trails and look out for more snakes and frogs. read more

Before going camping in Myrtle Beach we stopped en route about half way at Pocahontas State Park. The park is very nice in that very little of the forest is disturbed in order to create camp sites. As far as camping amenities go there is electric and water provided. The water needs to be pumped from a well so it's not a hookup. A central dump station is provided for purging your tanks. It's very peaceful at night with little noise disturbing the quiet, while stars abound. A very relaxing stay. read more

An awesome park perfect for getting away from it all. Ever since moving from the Atlanta area I've been looking for some good, large state parks similar to Red Top Mountain or Arabia Mountain. I'm happy to have found that in Pocahontas State Park! While it's not really up in the mountains like I would prefer, there's still plenty to explore here. You can drive through for free but parking is $5 for one of those little hangers you put on your rearview mirror. read more

Beautiful park! The older park lady was rude. I pulled into the park for an event and stopped for a moment in the employee parking lot and she approached me with a written sign. A hello and how can I help you is a great way to welcome someone to the park. Common courtesy goes a long way. After leaving the lot and finding my way to my event, we return near the entrance. A taller male park ranger was yelling at the top of his lungs to get out the road. I am not sure if they are not trained on customer service but it was evident that they do not want people to return. I am going to strongly suggest we find another site next year. We were participating in a JROTC event with cadets from over 5 states and it left a bad impression. read more

Love this park for so many reasons. There is so much to do I don't know if I can even mention it all. Camped here a couple of times. One time we rented a cabin. It is basic with bunk beds a table a fan and light. But that is it. We got a camp site which had water and electric. Decent size. Plenty of privacy with lots of trees between the site. There is a great pool here. 2 pools, a splash zone, and 2 big slides. Lots of fun for kids. There is a snack bar at the pool. It is basic and a little slow. Best bet is to get to the pool right when it opens. In the morning there are a lot of kids with camps. Then they clear out. The later in the day the crowd gets big again and sometime a little rowdy. So many hiking trails around. Yo just can rent canoes kayaks and stand up paddle board. You can bring you own as well with a boat launch. Check out the concerts that are at the amphitheater. There is a beer festival with food trucks bouncy castle and music at least once a year. And so much more. read more

We paid to get into the Aquatic center and was in the facility for about 15 minutes when staff started blowing whistles and making everyone get out of all of the pools. Everyone was out for about 5 minutes and then they told everyone to get back in. About 5 minutes after getting back into the water, everyone was ordered back out again. There was about 250 kids from "camp" classes there that were allowed to get into a separate pool in a corner of the facility but it was definitely not meant to hold that many people. Everyone else was forced to stand in the scorching heat on the concrete. After standing outside for about 15 minutes my husband went to the front to ask about what to expect and expressed concern for our immunocompromised family members that were present. It was clear at that time that they were cleaning feces from the pool with a net and vacuum. The front desk staff said that they only refund if the pool is closed down for 40 minutes and the pools were expected to open back up just under the 40 minute mark. They were still vacuuming up feces at that time. I am not sure why they had all of those kids get into another pool when all of the other pools had to be shut down due to the issue but it definitely looked like a safety concern because of how overcrowded it was. Many people who were not with the camps began to leave at that point. We were very concerned about the sanitation standard after watching what was occurring and also chose to leave. We were there to celebrate a birthday and it was a very disappointing experience to say the least. It was a lot of money wasted. I do not recommend and would not return. read more

How have I lived in Richmond for so long and have never been to PSP until today? It's definitely worth the trip out to Chesterfield for you North-of-the-River snobs like me. We got there ($7 parking fee) and headed straight to the water and jumped in the paddle boats, which was a really fun time. There are shallow places and places with rocks and downed trees, so be careful where you paddle. The scenery is really beautiful, though. After the boats, we went to the pool. $6 for adults and $5 for kids (regardless of if you're swimming). Really nice and several different sections for the various skill levels of swimmers. Not a lap pool. No diving boards, though. Bathrooms were cleaner than expected. Snack bar items were inexpensive (and limited). We had a really fun day and I'd definitely come back to explore more. read more

We came here for the first time this week (early June) and had a wonderful experience. Our site was very large and private and backed up to the woods. We could access the trail system right from our site which was a treat. The 4 pools are nice...baby pool, kids play pool and two large round pools. They could use more shade at them but we took our beach hair with built in umbrellas so were fine. The staff is very nice. It was quiet. The trails were good for both walking our dogs and riding our ebikes. It might be a little too hot in midsummer but the humidity wasn't bad this week. This is a park we will now come to every year. Douthat is still our favorite with the cooler mountain temps, incredible hiking, nice sites, and lake swimming. read more

Pocahontas State Park is a pretty cool place. I was first here a year ago for a concert. I was immediately impressed with how nice the park is. It's well maintained and the visitors seem to really respect it. On my most recent visit I decided to check out the aquatic center. It was $5 to park and then $15 for my son and me to gain access to the pool. The aquatic center has a pretty nice setup. They have a kiddie pool with all sorts of gadgets to spray people with, buckets to pour water on people, and shower type nozzles to stay cool. Then you have the big 3' pool that most patrons seem to gravitate towards. After that you have the big 5'6 pool for deep dive swimming. If that weren't enough, and in my opinion it's plenty, they also offer two modest water slides! The green water slide is pitch black and slightly longer of a ride. The yellow one lets you see at least but it's a short ride. The line moves fast because it's such a short ride. The life guards are absolutely outstanding. They aren't blowing their whistles excessively like those $#!+ heels at Kings Dominion. They just let the kids swim. They also aren't pool Nazi's with bull$#!+ rules like "no swim masks" - Kings Dominion needs to take note. The lounge chair situation is bad. You really have to be on your 'A' game to score one. Also the pool water is bad. I guess throwing rocks and leaves into the water is your idea of cleaning it. Thankfully they put enough chlorine in the pool to turn your teeth 5 shades whiter. It's a good thing too because some kid puked TWICE in the 3 foot pool. They then had to "shock" the pool for 20 minutes before they let people back in. Will I be going back? ABSOLUTELY! read more

Needed to stop for an overnight & saw good ratings here. I've been to VA state parks before (years ago) & was always pleased with them. Pocahontas was no exception. Campsites for our class C we're plenty big enough & well maintained. Bathrooms are very clean. Fire rings are available & each site has a metal pole with a hook on it. We used it for our lantern & it worked out great. Picnic tables were very nicely made & on a small platform. The only con was the unleveled sites. It is a state park but had I been staying longer hat could have been a problem. There is electric but no water hook up or sewer hook up. When you arrive you pick up your registration packet on the board outside the rangers shack. You do not have an assigned site so you just pick one the same color as your card. Very nice place! read more

We visited Pocahontas State park for Ragnar and had a great time.. The Park was beautiful clean and well designed. We rented a RV camp site 95 and team site near the lake. The showers were individual style and clean. We camped from Thursday to Saturday and had an awesome time.. Ragnar is a 24 hour 8 or 4 person trail relay that happens once a year. The Richmond Ragnar sells out about 10 months in advance and is usually scheduled on the last weekend of April. Its a challenging vent that tests your determination and fortitude. Each person runs 3 different trails and depending on you start time, it may be during the day or at night. Night trail running is completely different than day as you must a headlamp & a flashlight and its very easy to trip over rocks or tree roots. I was here for a concert today that started at 7 pm. We got to the entrance of the park at 6:54 pm. There was a big line of cars to get in and pay the $10 parking fee. It was 7:25 by the time we finally paid for parking at the gate. The concert ended at 8 pm. We came from over 40 minutes away and are very disappointed with how Pocahontas State Park handled this. read more

My mom was in town and we were looking for something to do nearby that was inexpensive and chill. She found that the park still was renting out kayaks and paddleboating. Most other places were done for the season. It only cost $10 for entrance/parking and the park was huge. There were a lot of different areas. We went down to the boat dock area. We decided on renting a paddle boat and it was $10 per hour. We had a great time out on the lake. The leaves were beautiful and an hour was plenty of time to explore and go at a nice easy pace. Afterwards we walked some of the trails for a little bit but the ones near the boating area were kind of disjointed. I would like to go back to explore more and see where more of the trails are and experience some of the other activities they offer! read more

First time visiting park, October 2020, after a rainy September/October. Temperatures were perfect for a long walk on the well-maintained trails, which for me, began behind the museum and past the dam. With my cellphone in hand, I ventured a little ways off the trail to discover an abundance of mushrooms and gorgeous landscape pictures to take. They have plenty of tables if you want to fire up the grill.if you get a shelter, you'll get more privacy. All tables is just a short walk to the swimming pool. The kids really enjoyed that.
