Sending my children to Monsignor McHugh was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life and the lives of my children. While at Mchugh I learned that a teacher, who still teaches there according to their website, would direct students in her 2nd grade class to massage her during the school day. Upon reporting this most inappropriate behavior no disciplinary/corrective action was taken against the teacher by the School Administration. When our daughter entered public school she was behind as a result of the substandard education provided by Monsignor McHugh. We enrolled our son at The Hillside School in second grade. He was there for three years then re-enrolled in seventh grade to help pilot the middle school program. The strategies he was taught in reading and writing along with skills in meta-cognition and self-advocacy have successfully supported him through high school and he will graduate in June. He was recently re-evaluated by our local school district in preparation for college admission. While he will always have a learning difference, he has tested out of needing specially designed instruction and hence an IEP. The faculty and staff at The Hillside School have consistently guided us with compassion and respect. Our investment in our son's education in his elementary and middle school years has been worth the time, effort and money put forth. My gratitude for Hillside is deep and wide. We celebrate our son's strengths every day and look forward to a bright future.

When our child started school, it was apparent that they had repurposed an old storage room, and that the student:teacher ratio was far worse than advertised. When we complained about the state of the classroom, rather than do the right thing and hire additional staff, the school administration expelled our child from the school on zero days' notice, despite having no documented behavioral or academic issues of any kind. During the expulsion meeting, the administration admitted to being unable to hire additional staff and _intentionally_ overbooking the class sizes during registration. The founder of this school is obsessed with metrics. If your child represents a threat to one of those metrics (be it student-teacher ratio, standardized test scores, etc.) then they will absolutely throw your child under the bus to make the school look better. Be warned.

Students won an award for their science work. Northern is a fascinating example of STEAM--science, technology, arts, music. Northern offers ballet, classical music, and classical Chinese dance, along with the humanities and science programs. We visited an arts studio on campus, too, with student's skillful work displayed. A parent spoke of how flexibly the faculty designed course work for his sons--one was extremely good at math, and they let him advance into a much higher grade to do challenging work. Another was extremely poor at Chinese, and the school found two others who were novices and created an ultra-beginner class just for them. If only all schools could do such things! It's good to see a school restoring and using the abandoned Beaux Arts buildings that had become so blighted. Glad they preserved the graceful proportions and aged brick of the old buildings, while making it modern and bright inside.
