My husband had the wild boar steak, so I tried it. It was very highly seasoned, a tad too much for my tastes and I usually like a lot of seasoning. It was actually very good, but I don't think I could eat the entire portion because of the seasoning. We had been wandering around Krakow looking for a good place to eat and were able to score a table at this traditional restaurant. We were seated right next to the wood fired grill and loved watching the staff tend the meats and potatoes and finish the plates for the busy restaurant. We shared the smoked cheese, meat filled pierogi and the grilled pork tenderloin entree, and had the apple pie for dessert. I even had my first glass of Polish wine. I was so excited to try this restaurant as it was a recommendation from a friend, and it did not disappoint! Zuzanna was my waitress, and she was so kind. She answered all my questions and was just so polite. That's something that stood out to me amongst all the staff, they were so mannered and sweet. As for the food... oh my goodness! What a great restaurant for my first night in Poland! I got the pierogies to start, pan fried is my favorite! I also got the roasted turkey, which was also BEYOND! I highly recommend enjoying your meal with a glass of Winnica Amelie's white wine! My wife and I went for a date night while in Krakow. A friend recommended this place. In short, TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. We arrived at 645pm and were seated in a largely empty section of the restaurant. Shortly after 7, two tables around us were filled with people from the same business who apparently had another table in another room. Our quiet dinner together was then interrupted by speeches, photos, etc. In short, a complete circus. Wait staff apologized multiple times. No manager to be found. The first time I dined here was 2 years ago on my first visit to Krakow. That evening is unforgettable for many reasons, but I particularly recall the delicious meal of pork cheek, horseradish, and cranberries. I also made friends with a stylish couple from Oslo sitting at the table next to us. We ended up drinking wodka until the wee hours. Good times. Tonight was even better. I had the herring app, the pâté app, and borsch. To start, I love the lard brought with the bread. The herring app had long, thick pieces of herring with great flavor. The slaw that accompanied was made with sour cream, apples, and onions and was better than we make at home. The pâté was perfect. Not salty. The cranberries had a distinctive flavor with cloves. I didn't care for the borsch. It was clear. I prefer a creamier variety with more herbs. My Polski hottie devoured a pig dish and pierogi's. I tried his purple cabbage- excellent! And the (meat) pierogi's were the best I've had. Ever! The price is reasonable considering they are consistently wonderful with an Old World ambiance. In town for the weekend and hankering for some traditional Polish food I sniffed this place out on Yelp and headed on over. Finding restaurants like this is why I love you other Yelpers so much, you know all the best places to eat! We had no reservation but showed up around 7pm on Friday night and got a table no problem. Before we ordered we were served a basket of bread with a side dish containing lard and chunks of cooked pork, mmmmmm it was so good, the shape of things to come! The pierogis were the must have starter as far as I could see, we got two plates and I wasn't disappointed. If truth be told I could have skipped the main and just kept eating them all night, I'm glad I didn't though because the mains were just as tasty! Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive and we weren't kept waiting for our courses, the interior decor gave an upmarket feel to the restaurant yet when the bill came it was remarkably good value. Nestled between two shops is the entrance to a wonderland of traditional Polish food and impeccable fine service. Pod Aniolami is super fancy, requires a reservation seemingly all the time, and offers small portions at high prices. That said, everything we had was incredibly tasty. Ok, so the spiced lard was pretty weird to our American palettes, but everything else was a taste sensation. We started our meal with borsht and mushroom soups--both incredible. For an entree, my mom and I split the Nobleman's Pork, which was tender and juicy and everything right. Rating out of 10: 9 Pod Aniolami is a really old restaurant in Krakow that not only I found on a number of top restaurant lists but also received personal recommendations. On my last night in Krakow, I went with 3 of my other colleagues and had an amazing dinner. They start you with the house lard and bread. I had lard a couple of times during the week, and this one was my favorite. It was very smooth with a mild flavor, and it was a nice topper for the bread. We decided to order 2 types of pierogis for starters: Russian (cottage cheese, potatoes and onion) and Venison. Their pierogis have apparently won first place in competitions in Krakow, and I can see why. The venison was my favorite of the 2, as the rich flavor of the venison was nice and robust amidst the delicious fried dumpling (but don't get me wrong, the Russian style was great too!). We also ordered the traditional Polish herring starter, which we had seen at other restaurants but had yet to order. Honestly, it was not my favorite, but it was prepared quite well. I ordered the sour rye soup (with bacon and eggs), another local specialty I had not tried yet, and it was amazing. It had a fabulous flavor throughout and was simply delicious. For dinner, I ordered what I had been recommended by many: the wild boar steak in juniper marinade. Holy cow (or should I say holy boar?) it was stunning. It was super tender and had a wonderful flavor, quite different from any steak I have ever had. I really enjoyed the rich, somewhat gamey flavor, and I wish I could eat this for dinner every night! It was served with potatoes and red cabbage that were also prepared well. After all of this food I was too full for dessert, but they did finish us off with their housemade mint vodka. I cannot stop thinking about their ridiculously delicious mushroom soup! We made reservation (highly recommended) for our last night in krakow and are so glad we chose this place! The hazelnut vodka was divine, as was the black currant juice. I wasn't feeling hungry, having just eaten a few hours ago, but my family got the wild boar and duck. The boar was amazing and perfectly seasoned. Though sadly I can't say the same for the duck. I think the potatoes also needed a little salt. As one of the most memorable dining experiences from my Eastern Euro trip this past summer, this restaurant was well worth the cost. For the ambiance and quality of food, my group and I will never forget our evening in Krakow. At the suggestion of our tour guide from during the day, my husband and I, along with his sister and her husband, selected this place to start off our night out on the town. Because the hubby and sister-in-law are originally from Poland and are fluent in the language, I and the brother-in-law let them take the lead with making reservations and putting in our orders. Awe-inspiring atmosphere - We were happy to see that our table was in a little alcove within the wine cellar. It was nice and cozy within the nook, but also formal with the linens and candles. The restaurant encompasses a few floors that go deep underground so it's honestly a breath-taking space. Feast fit for a king (or at least a bunch of hungry tourists) - Our group couldn't help ourselves because we had the intention to splurge that night so here are the main parts of each course that I can recall from notes in my personal travel journal: *Apps: -Really cannot beat fresh-baked bread in Poland with thick, filling lard containing bacon bits to slather on top (instead of the usual butter) -Alongside this platter was the bigos (AKA cabbage and meat mixture). Although, I was not as much of a fan of the acidic tomato that this restaurant added. I am not used to tasting tomato in the same dish that my mother-in-law makes. *Entrees with side dishes: -Wild boar with capers and garlicky spinach: Absolutely loved the seasoning of the boar and the texture of it wasn't too chewy. Spinach was flavorful but was not a fan of it chopped up. *Roasted duck with beets: This duck is definitely one of my fav versions of my most fav dishes at any restaurant. (We had actually just had pretty forgettable, dry duck the night before at a mediocre restaurant in Old Town of Warsaw.) Saving the best for last- I miss the tradition of most Polish restaurants ending my meal with a complimentary shot of vodka. Pod Aniołami means "Under the Angels" and it seemed to be the nice restaurant that tourists go to when they visit Krakow so I decided to give it a try with my date one night. The restaurant is described as an extraordinary place where there are angels in it's gothic cellars. The place is famed for marinating its meats over beech hardwood fire along with serving up some traditional Polish cuisine. Upon walking in, you get that gothic cellar vibe to the place are you go down the hallway into the eating areas. I was hoping to sit in the basement from the pictures that i saw on Yelp but alas they set us up outside next to the bar and some grilling/cooking area which I did not mind because I love watching food being prepared. This place also had a emphasis on big group hence the big tables all around us and many options for fixed course dinners. Not being that hungry, we opted for some apps and regular portioned meals. To accompany my delicious beer, we were served bread with homemade smalec, a traditional Polish lard that is often served with bread, and it was delicious. Having had pierogis for lunch that day, we decided to skip it and just munch on the bread until our main courses arrived. My dish that came was a grilled knuckle of pork with herbs in beer served with horseradish and mustard which was very hearty and juicy. It also came along with some house made pickled cucumber and small potatoes. The meal was pleasant and filling, and I am not sure how we would have fared with the fixed course menu. My date opted for a salad which was loaded with all sorts of meats and toppings. At the end of our meal, we were served house made mint vodka shots which were quite a refreshing way to end things on. One thing I love about Poland, as an American, is that I think a lot of the prices were cheap, and this being one of the more upscale places was very affordable to my standards for the food quality we got. If I am ever back in Krakow, I would love to come back here with a group just to get a big table and tasting menu and take in the cool vibes of this place! read more

Pod Aniołami is housed in a Baroque building with a cellar that dates to medieval times. For foreign visitors, it offers a rather unique dining experience. The quality of the food and the service level failed to impress me, I have to say. Either was bad--just not up to par compared to most up-market establishments in Krakow nowadays. The lack of effort spent on presentation was somewhat jarring. I mean every dish came with a clump of alfalfa sprouts and that was it. Plain-looking food in a beautifully decorated room--what a let-down. Meanwhile, our waitress was clearly just some college student trying to make ends meet. This is one of the best meals I have ever had. The service was fantastic and quick and they were really accomidating despite booking very late. The food was prepared quickly without the feeling that we were being hurried. The complimentary bread to start was delicious. My husband and both had the meat platter to start which was incredibly flavoursome and the tomato sauce and horseraddish was excellent. We then followed with soup which was excellent. The main course was perfectly prepared. My husband had a rare stake and I had the boar. The side dishes were incredibly delicious. So I pointed to an empty table outside and asked if I could sit there. Chairs and tables got moved around a bit, and I was handed a menu. I came here for the bigos, aka hunter's stew. It was really just a plate of stew with meats, onions, and mushrooms. It was quite good but a lot of meat and I wish they gave it with bread or potatoes. It should be the traditional bigos but maybe I'm just not a fan. This place is quite pricey as well! The staff was very friendly. The mushroom soup was very tasty and needs to be tried. I had the pork with paprika seasoning, potatoes and cranberry filled apple and the meal was outstanding. This place provides a very poor service and food. 1) Restaurant staff registered our reservation by handwriting in their book, but did not manage to find it just on the next day when we arrived to the restaurant in time. So they made us wait until they find a free table. 2) Their so called "Traditional Polish red borscht" is a lie: they provide a plate with beetroot water heavily, I mean HEAVILY, peppered. Where is all the staffing? The soup is supposed to be served with "French pasty finger", but as you may have guessed, there was none. 3) Guess what, "Rib eye steak (marbly) from seasoned meat, marinated in rosemary," is made of pork. I had the bigondelicious as well, and we shared an order of spinach. The apple pie with ice cream was amazing! This is a must stop in krakow! By far the best dinner we had in our visit. I did not feel the restaurant expensive, considering it's one of the most high end restaurants of the city, we paid $80 dlls invluding tip, and it was a lot of food! Everything top quality! This place has a very cool ambiance - although it is pretty big, there are several separate alcove dining areas so it feels very intimate. The food is nice too, kind of up leveled but still classic. The service was a little clumsy - the guy meant well and was nice enough, but needed training (for example he did not remove the wine glasses although we ordered beer).
