Walking into around 2pm the bakery was steadily busy though didn't feel excessively crowded. A couple customers or groups would trickle in at a time, there were two people in line in front of me, perfect for me to take in the options and decide what to get. There are about 5-6 smaller cafe tables set up for about 2-3 people each, not a place for larger groups. The staff (woman at the counter), was friendly and helpful when I asked about the differences in the wafels, her recommendations, and what some of the other baked goods were. I was very curious about the gember køek and she said that was her favorite in the store. So I got: - honingwafel €3.60: as mentioned above crispy cookies with a honey syrup center. I'm kinda curious what this consisted of since it tasted less sweet than only honey itself. Level of sweetness is probably 6 or 7 out of 10. I ate it by itself and thought it would go well with some coffee or tea. As you're eating a little of the syrup may be squeezed out of the sandwich at the edges so take care. As they sold more, I saw fresh cookies being prepared on the side. - gember køek €3.20: as a ginger lover, I couldn't say no to this one; it's an almond cookie covered on top with chunks of candied ginger. A softer crumb, the ginger pieces were very sweet, cloyingly so that after eating about half (on a separate day than the wafel) I wish I had a cup of black coffee in the moment. - speculaasbrokken €5.50: crispy speculos cookies (think those bischoff ones they serve on Delta flights also widely available in US grocery stores now), but house-made and with almond slivers on top. Chocolate Croissant: A very unique chocolate croissant since it was actually dipped in a rich dark chocolate. Still the same buttery flaky croissant texture underneath, which you'd expect. And I think there was a little chocolate inside too. High recommend for any chocolate lover. Timmetje: Tasted like olive bread with a lot of crisped cheese on top. Very savory. Since I bought so many sweets, this was a nice counterpoint. Appel Rozijn: Seemed like a fluffy bun with a little bit of raisins and a little bit of apple. Not that sweet. Also, not that flavorful, kinda bland. Appel Tartlettes: Meanwhile, this one is loaded with apple bits and nuts! All resting in a buttery pastry nest. Loved the intense fruit onslaught. Frambozen Pecan: I've had a lot of dessert bars in my day, but never raspberry and pecan. The flavors worked very well together. Sweet, slightly tart, a little meaty from the pecans. Also, just enough apples inside without overwhelming it. This is exactly like the quality of pastries I've had all over France, but never get anywhere in the entire the Bay Area, with the exception of the Kouign Amann at B. patisserie in SF. I stumbled on this bakery while wandering this popular street, which by the way has quite a few Asian restaurants, as it's nearby Chinatown (which itself is not anything to speak of at all). There's also a book written about the restaurants and shops on this street, but this is NOT a touristy spot like so so many of the bakeries in Amsterdam. It's small and quaint with quality baked goods, not massed produced pedestrian food. Although the selections are fairly limited, what they have here is high quality baked goods. They're a very bread centric bakery, which is why I'm guessing their clientele is more local. I've seen locals coming in purchasing loaves of their freshly made breads. I tried their raisin bread and there were so many sweet rainsins in every slice! If you're putting a foodie list together for Amsterdam, definitely add the Apple Turnover here to your list. And bring along a little stash of cash, as they don't accept credit cards here. I'm literally off now to get one to happily start my morning again!

It is located below ground level under a residential apartment building. Very small restaurant with twelve tables constructed of light pine wood. The main dish here is the grilled cheese sandwich which is made of melted guida cheese with thick corn bread. Absolutely loved that the origins of the sandwich are from Holland.

But we knew we had to try it, and life is short. It is a tiny stand located along a central canal in the heart of the city. Business is hopping here. We got the picked herring and kibbeling, which are the main staples here. The pickled herring was, well, something you either love or don't. It has somewhat of a gelatinous texture that can be off-putting, but when you take a bite with the sides of sweet pickles and onions, it shines. The Kibbeling was out of this world. Perfectly fried with a crunchy batter that had a hint of, hmmm, curry, maybe. It was amazing. Although the batter was thick and tasty, it didn't outdo the delicious cod. The staff here was friendly, and having this Dutch food along a canal in Amsterdam made for a memorable experience.
