What a lovely beach. It feels much more secluded than it's Zuma beach counterpart but at the same time it is a bit more rocky. There is a great trail that takes you up the very point of the place's namesake and it's a fairly easy "hike". On the way up there is a "shortcut" that lets you climb up and through the rocks instead of going around that will take you to the very edge. I came on a fairly windy day and there were flocks of seabirds flying against the wind. They were following the coast so about a hundred birds flew right by myself almost in slow motion. I was so awestruck by the scene that I didn't even think to whip out my phone and take a picture. Ahh well, mental pictures are also good I guess:) A bit further and before you even see them, you'll smell the 'stench' of sea lions. It smells like rotting fish. They'll usually be (roosting/nesting/)? right before you hit the wooden platform with the benches. Just take a peer downwards to the coast. If you go a bit further and climb up the hill to the left there's a plaque with the history of Point Dume and it's namesake. If you continue on to the right and go down the stairs a bit further you'll go down to the other side of the beach. It's a bit rocky for the first quarter mile but further down it's a sandy beach. Great get away from the hustle and bustle of a normal beach. Do note however that you will see beached animals, sometimes rotting. There's also a in between beach that you have to climb a few boulders to get to, which I think is the Point Dume Cove. It's not that hard to get to, but you should probably wear some kind of sturdier shoes than flip flops. I came by this couple that had trouble climbing over since they had a cooler and chairs. The girl was wearing flip flops with a summer dress. I ended up asking if they needed help because it looked like all her attention should be devoted to getting through the entire ordeal alive and in one piece. It's a great thing I did help out too because I saw the guy pull out a hand written letter and read it to her aloud once they got situated :) Definitely an "Aww" moment read more

Beautiful park but the trails need some maintenance. The shrubbery has grown into the trails in many places and guard ropes are failing. This park has the most gorgeous views in Southern California by far. read more

I LOVED this beach. Sadly, we were just in the area so I didn't bring any beach attire to lay out in :((( This beach is clean, well maintained, and not overly crowded! Parking is about $4-6 depending on the time and day you go. If this place wasn't 50 MILES from me....I would be here every weekend :( read more

Loved it here. Plenty of trails to walk around on. Located above the cliffs. Great views. Trails down to the beach are steep, lots of surfers head to the beach here. Parking is hard to find. This place is used for locals and not tourists. If you are a tourist visiting the Malibu area, I recommend finding a more popular beach. read more

We found this beautiful trail when we were almost eaten at another hiking trail (scariest shit of my life). I must say I immediately fell in love for this beach. Like I spend all of my time wishing I was here, looking at my photos and videos, and looking from my work window. The trail is gorgeous and definitely a great workout. We took some stairs down to the rocks and ended up on all rocks and water. We took a uh long break from the hike to enjoy the water and I loved it. I usually never get in ocean water anymore but the water was so beautiful I had so. It was so clear, cold, and crisp. The sight was amazing all around. We spotted some seals and dolphins in the water as well. This is definitely our regular spot now, pretty sad that summer is over now but hey it's California. read more

Sweet summertime fun in Malibu. If you've never been, then you should definitely go. Parking on weekends this stuff, you might have to do some walking, but so worth it. You can walk down the cliff side to the actual beach. Steep walk for children. read more

This beach was absolutely beautiful. Enjoy a scenic drive from LA through canyons to reach this picturesque destination. Parking is plentiful on weekdays. There is a paid lot ($8) on the far end. The beach is VERY clean. Lifeguards on duty on the latter part of our time there. We did walk to have a light lunch at the nearby restaurant. It's not super inexpensive, but it's worth it to get out of the sun for a little bit and get some food. Bathrooms could use a little work. Plus there wasn't any soap....Eww! I'm looking forward to returning here! read more

This is my favorite beach in Los Angeles! I'm talking about the south side of Point Dume. The area where there is hardly any parking and between the two corners. It's so clean and beautiful here. I'm told you see a lot of sea lions here. Unfortunately, I did see one but it was dead :( The hiking trail is very elementary and short so don't expect too much of a hike but at the top you have some very beautiful views of the area. I just wish this beach wasn't so far up the PCH but then again it makes it that much more special. Love this place. read more

To get here use 6801 westward beach rd as your destination address so you can get to the parking lot. When you look at the map, you will see sunset restaurant. The first group of parking is free. Plentiful, but you snooze you lose. Next lot is $12.50- also plentiful. If you go on the weekend buffer 20-30 minutes for parking craziness. Basically you park and walk a few feet and you hit beach. The parking lot has a number of restrooms at both ends. The women's restroom is meh. 2 working bathrooms/building the day I went. NO SOAP dispenser. Shower on the other side of the building. If you park at the very end of the parking lot you can start walking up to get to the cliff for the awesome view where you can be slapped in the face with second hand contact high and dog owners AKA rule-breaking-anti-environmentalist. About a 4 minute walk to get to the top for great views and sunset watching. If you keep following the trail you'll hit the reserve too and Dume cove where the surfers hang out. Depending on what time of year you go, you might see seals. Saw two yesterday before sunset! The beach is clean and there is a lot of space to spread out. Diverse, family-friendly, teen friendly, rock climber friendly, lazy tanning friendly and of course, swim friendly. Life guard also available and knowledgeable. read more

Are you: a) Stressed Out? b) Overworked? c) Dogged by 'The Man'? d) Fed up with the Rat Race? Clearly you need to make some serious structural changes to your assed-out life. Sure, one little day trip to Pt. DOOM won't do much to save your sucky life, but it might help prevent a cardiac event or at least get you all tickled 'pink' for an afternoon... So whether your life just t'aint what you wished it could be, or you do love your life but just need a beachside chillout away from most of the annoying LA humanity, Point Dume is the Rx you need. Some tips: a) Play hooky on a week day (as opposed to a weekend day)--you'll avoid the legendary 10 fwy/PCH gridlock, and when you swiftly arrive, you'll be treated to a semi-private beach environment. Against the grain ALWAYS pays dividends... :O} b) If you come on a non-amateurs day, you won't have to pay that $7 parking fee and can park for free on Westward Beach Rd. c) Chillax with a cocktail or an appy at the Sunset Restaurant on the beach. d) No Need to strain those eyes...YES, them there are Dolphins frolicking two by two, just past the breakers...showoffs! Sure, none of this will conjure up white sand beaches or 'balmy' water temps much above 60 degrees, but this spot is hands down the best beach hang along the '27 Miles of Scenic Coast' known as the city of Malibu--Zuma to the north is waaay too commercial and crowded, and Paradise Cove to the south is a big ole' 'Meh.' Hooky, anyone? DONE. read more

I don't know how you can knock a star off this place. Nothing really to add except the OBVIOUS CAVE that's in the middle of the beach. Bring a flashlight and go to the end of the cave. It drops off a couple feet and there's a little pit down there. Bring some weed and enlighten your mind! Parking is a pain, but there's more parking on Fernhill or Grasswood. If you can't hoof that, you deserve to stay inside. Please pick up your trash too, especially in the cave. I hear super left wing radicals scope the place out and violate trash offenders with giant organic cucumbers. Families with kids should also stay away. The water is actually reefy with lots of sharp rocks. It's a beach for romantic quiet types anyway. Families should go to Zuma Beach or really just stay in Santa Monica. read more

I used to travel North and South along the PCH searching for interesting sites and smaller less crowded beaches. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon Point Dume, whether it was random or if it purposeful. It's one of my fave beaches here close to LA, the other is some little beach I have no idea what name a little south of Laguna. I'm not one of those girls that loves to just sit out in the sun for hours at a time and do absolutely nothing. Sometimes yes, but often times I like to play in the sand, or fly a kite, or just do something. Not only is Point Dume clean, with the occasional piece of tar (yea sucks but just watch out for that black stuff), there's also lots to do if you are closer to the cliffs. You can climb the rocks below the cliffs to peek into the small tidal pools near the water. I've seen little crabs and anenomes before. The proceed over the rocks to find a little cliff surrounded beach. A bit of a secret surprise. Be careful and give the rock climbers a lot of room. Just in case. If you're an outdoor climber, you can bring your own ropes and rig them up to climb several routes they have here. My sister actually has actually climbed up before and it looked pretty cool from where I was standing (at the bottom). Don't wanna get wet? Walk up the path to the top of the cliff and check out the great view. Also lotsa plants and some of those little lizards all over the place. You may also see a sea lion from there too. I've heard that they have a rook somewhere near the bottom of the cliff. I saw one swimming round near the tidal pools, and my friend heard them barking the weekend after I went. There's also free parking here if you get here early or just come during off seasons. Since it doesnt get super crowded here, its a good place to fly a kite too. No worries about it falling on some poor unsuspecting person's head and, plenty of open space. Wind gets pretty strong as the day wears on though, so better tie it properly! The best thing for last....I've seen whales here before! The migration season I think is from December to March, and its a bit hard to see them unless they fluke or blow out water...but sometimes they get really close. The easiest way to spot one is to look around for a crowd of people, and maybe one with a huge camera. They get pretty close to the beach and you don't need binoculars to see them at all. I was unlucky last time I came here as I was searching for whales but didn't see any. I did see a few dolphins though. read more

Not a lot of things can top starting a day with the view of the California coast. I really feel like Sunday's were made for Malibu!!! Probably the easiest hiking trail I've ever experienced, but still very worth it nonetheless. It's a very brisk workout (if I could even call it that), but again... you come here for the view. Even with the overcast, the view was still breathtaking! Kinda glad the sun wasn't gleaming because we forgot to bring sunblock lol. The breeze from the beach and the sound of the waves... I just couldn't get enough of it. Parking is $10 at the beach and the entrance to the trail is at the very end of the parking lot, you won't miss it. There's also a lot of street parking along the beach if you want to save ten bucks and walk a little more... I recommend it! You get to walk alongside the beach anyway so it's an enjoyable walk to the trail. read more

Dume is the place to go to kick the gloom. This is now one of my top favorite SoCal beaches. It's far enough away to get way and still close enough to be near city life. I decided to haul out and see how far a tank on gas on my bike could take me. Here is just before the halfway point. I ended up seeing other beaches further out but came back to Dume because there is more beach to sit on and the sunset was setting itself up to be beautiful here. Note to drivers: Please look out for motorcycles. I know it might be a beautiful day but please stay alert. Oh and you silly boys who ask to see a girl do a wheelie; yes I can but not for you, you smiply aren't worth the risk. read more

For the nature lovers and for beach lovers. This place is perfect, you owe it to yourself to visit this PCH gem. Come around sunset for a beautiful view with your significant other. I come here all the time to get away or after a drive down PCH, parking is free... At least I think it is. There's an easy hike at the end of the road that leads to a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. I've gone on the trail, I just don't remember it because I may have been a little intoxicated. But my party seemed to really enjoy the hike, and if a drunk can do it, can't be that bad. read more

This was such a scary nature walk for me. Not because of my fear of heights, but because of the random lizards I encountered during my trek up. A couple of times I lost my balance because I was trying to avoid lizards that were dangerously close to my exposed toes. Yes, yes...I did a nature walk in flip flops. I was ill-prepared...but it was only partially my fault. I was told I would just enjoy the nice, quiet, and CLEAN sandy area of Point Dume...!! Point Dume has a great view of the good ole Pacific Ocean. The view was wonderful and the air was not filled with sea-stink. One thing I don't like is the pricey parking. I paid $7!! My friend and I were wondering why the parking lot was so empty...and then we later realized that there was free parking outside the lot. AIYAAAAAAAAAAAA! read more

It's one of the many beautiful beaches in the Malibu area, but what makes this one stand out for me is the little trail you can take to the top of the cliff. There's seating up there you can pack your lunch and head up with your friends and enjoy the gorgeous view. The hike is easy, I saw little old lady's up there. You get pretty close to that cliff so if you're going up with the little ones keep them close. I can hear the sea lions off the rocks from up this cliff. read more

This beach is freakishly beautiful! Its full of awesome scenic views of whales, birds, and gorgeous hues of blue water. Getting down to it not so great but definitely worth it! First, there is only 8 parking spaces available for this beach with 2 hour parking. So if your not lucky enough to get one of this 8 parking spaces be prepared to park at least, a couple of miles away because there are residential no parking signs and will tow signs posted everywhere! Once you get a parking spot you have to make it down to the beach with all your beach wear, so I suggest you pack as lightly as possible because balance is key when getting to this beach. Also, I suggest not talking small children who you have to carry or have not mastered walking, hoping, balancing, or climbing yet. At least everyone in my group almost fell once and I also talked to an elderly lady that informed me to be careful because she had fallen on the rocks that are down the beach. There is a narrow trail that reaks of urine in some spots (no restroom facilities in beach) that leads you to a VERY long steep staircase (in need of repair) that takes you down to the beach. But once your down on the beach it's not over! You have to hike and maneuver across rocks to finally get to the beach sand part which can be considered a mini workout! However, once pass these rocks its awesome! We had sooo much fun looking at the water! Why, because of the sea life. But I must warn you, we did see baby sharks everywhere in very shallow water (2 feet of water). I would have definitely given this beach 5 stars if it were not for the lack of parking spaces and the climb down which was made harder by having two 5 year olds with us. However, I will definitely visit this beach again but will bring hiking shoes and only bring things I will absolutely need! read more

We arrived around 11:30 and luckily found street parking along the beach. It was nice out, sunny and a good amount of people along close to the water. We found a spot and made ourself comfortable. There was a good half dozen or so school buses parked where the volleyball courts are. Either a summer camp or school is back in session and it was a beach day. The odd thing, after an hour we arrived, the clouds started to roll in. Within minutes, it went from sunshine to overcast and gloomy. Stayed like that for a good hour and half. Even looking out to the hillside, it was so gloomy that you couldn't see down the beach. When the clouds burned off, it was back to beautiful beach weather. Lifeguard towers were in full force. We did notice that security on four wheelers were patrolling. They did questioned some people. It's a beautiful stretch of beach if you haven't been. The water was beautiful and looked clean but the waves were on a different level. They were pretty massive so lifeguards were on full force. People did go in the water but not a lot. To make it more magical, there were schools of dolphins swimming close by the shore. Even more fun, you could see them basically surfing the waves. That brought everyone on their feet trying to get the perfect picture. There's a good amount of restrooms and showers. It was actually clean which is a major plus. There's also a little lagoon that's a hangout for all the seagulls and pelican. Sand was soft and hot. Beach was clean, water was clean so it's was a good experience. It's a must if you haven't been.

I wish there were more trash cans present on the beach part as well as some sort of food options available. I know there used to be some small food stands, but they have since closed. Love coming here with the family for a beach picnic. Love that the bathrooms have showers to rinse off after a day of playing in the sand.

I went for a run along the beach. When I came back my feet were covered in tar. It took me a long time to get it off as soap doesn't work well. If you got tar on yourself, cooking oil works well to remove it. I was having a nice time until my feet got covered in tar. I'm not sure if it's the road construction nearby or the naval base that caused the tar problem. I probably wouldn't return. The beach charges $3/hour or $8/day to park at the beach. I recommend picking a different beach. Although there are some hikes nearby here that have awesome views.

Timing really matters here. It is best to come during off hours if you want any chance of getting a lounge chair to set your belongings down or take a break. When it is busy, seating is very limited and can get crowded quickly. The pool itself is not ideal for young children or anyone expecting a gradual entry. There is no graded or zero-depth entrance. Instead, you enter via a ladder directly into about four feet of water, with a rope separating this area from the deeper section. This setup may be fine for confident swimmers, but it felt less family-friendly than anticipated. Conversely, if you are looking to swim laps, this is not a lap pool. It is purely recreational. The changing and bathroom area is very open, and the showers offer no privacy. The shower water was also quite cold, which was not especially comfortable, particularly for kids. If you are expecting enclosed changing rooms or warm showers, this may be disappointing. Parking is public street parking only, paid at meters, which adds another layer of planning and cost. Overall, while the beach house is in a beautiful spot and can be enjoyable under the right circumstances, the lack of amenities, limited seating, and less-than-ideal pool and changing facilities make it hard to fully relax or recommend, especially for families with young children.

We arrived around 11:30 and luckily found street parking along the beach. It was nice out, sunny and a good amount of people along close to the water. We found a spot and made ourself comfortable. There was a good half dozen or so school buses parked where the volleyball courts are. Either a summer camp or school is back in session and it was a beach day. The odd thing, after an hour we arrived, the clouds started to roll in. Within minutes, it went from sunshine to overcast and gloomy. Stayed like that for a good hour and half. Even looking out to the hillside, it was so gloomy that you couldn't see down the beach. When the clouds burned off, it was back to beautiful beach weather. Lifeguard towers were in full force. We did notice that security on four wheelers were patrolling. They did questioned some people. It's a beautiful stretch of beach if you haven't been. The water was beautiful and looked clean but the waves were on a different level. They were pretty massive so lifeguards were on full force. People did go in the water but not a lot. To make it more magical, there were schools of dolphins swimming close by the shore. Even more fun, you could see them basically surfing the waves. That brought everyone on their feet trying to get the perfect picture. There's a good amount of restrooms and showers. It was actually clean which is a major plus. There's also a little lagoon that's a hangout for all the seagulls and pelican. Sand was soft and hot. Beach was clean, water was clean so it's was a good experience.
