I was lucky enough to observe nap time and the entire experience is really relaxing (I almost fell asleep myself!) haha There are sounds of nature while the kids sleep and all the children have their own mats and individual space. For being in the top 20 of his class, he's been offered a full-ride to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and will join their Electrical Engineering program when he gets back from bootcamp for the US Air Force Reserve! My child is definitely an over achiever, but please don't sleep on Fortune School. I enrolled him as a Kindergartener. He's the baby of 6 and the only one FORTUNate enough to be in a charter school from beginning to end. The difference between my public school educated kids and him is glaringly obvious. He has been poured into not only at home, but his educators have literally empowered, and uplifted this kid to unimaginable heights, and the experience with my older children in public school settings was never like this. I especially appreciate the goal of "closing the achievement gap." That means that my little brown son wasn't unnecessarily sent home when he was in class talking too much the way public school did my older children. He was treated with patience. He was advised that there was a time and a place for his voice to be heard. He was given chances and not just pushed aside, overlooked, and treated like a nuisance. From Fortune Elementary School, to Ephraim Williams College Prep, all the way to Fortune High School, this kid was loved for 13 straight years outside of my home and I'm not just proud of the young man he is and is becoming. I'm also proud of every single staff member we've encountered along the way. Some of them were already a part of our lives, but the rest will always be as dear as family every time we cross paths. My son right above him also attended from 2nd to 8th grade. He was a bit more of a challenge, because he just didn't do as well in such a structured environment, but the teachers loved him and covered him as long as he was one of theirs. One day after work, I went to pick the kids up from daycare, and my provider advised me that child #5 wasn't allowed to leave the school, and I was advised to go there to get him. I was LIVID! I didn't feel like going the opposite direction on Stockton Blvd. to get him, and I was ready to give somebody at fortune school a piece of my mind about it. However, when I pulled up to the school, I parked directly in front of Mrs. Howards 3rd grade class and what I saw brings tears to my eyes even now and it's been 10 years. My son was seated at a table, obviously working on a difficult assignment, but Mrs. Howard was next to him, not seated, but on her knees, on the bare floor, tutoring him one-on-one. School had let out at around 4pm. I wasn't off till 5, and it took me about 30 minutes to get to the daycare, another 10 to round up the kids, and another 10, to drive back to the school. So here it is nearly 2hrs after school had let out, when Mrs. Howard should have been home with her own children, but she was sacrificing her free time to help ensure the success of mine. She has held a special place in my heart ever since. I have similar stories about, Monisha Blake, Odisa Nyong, Mr. Emeh (RIP), Malcolm Ajai, Mrs. Kirksey, Ms. Royal, Mrs. East, Mrs. Ibarra, Mr. Jones, Joseph Gambino, Stefon DuBose, Marcus Atkins, and many others. I would recommend the Fortune family of schools to any family that wants to give their child a quality education, while preparing them for college from the very first day. An administrator at the Capitol Campus forced my daughter to sit on a stool in her office for…read morehours. Ms. O said she forgot my daughter was in there. Forgot. My child. She left her and went outside. She left one voicemail message for me stating that my daughter was in trouble and I needed to call the office. No other attempts to reach me were made, even though I have 5 different emergency contacts available and the school readily called them all if one of my children was ill. I showed up to the school for an event and saw my daughter sitting, on display, in the administrator's office. She was alone and I had no idea she was in there and almost walked past. She immediately burst into tears BECAUSE SHE NEEDED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM BUT WAS TOLD NOT TO MOVE. Ms. O was told to apologize the next day but "forgot". I'm not even kidding. She finally did apologize (guess what- my daughter hadn't even done what they accused her off, which really doesn't matter because even if she did this was child abuse). CMP's response was to promote Ms. O to Principal of her own campus. I would never trust this administration. They can keep deleting my reviews all they want but I will keep returning. Parents deserve to know.

I really appreciate how much choice kids are given throughout the day. The teachers are experienced with long tenures at the school, which speaks volumes about the work environment and quality of the program. Love how communicative and hands-on the director is--my kid is always excited to greet her which I think reflects how she's involved in the day to day classroom experience. The facilities are also fantastic including a big grassy area, kid-sized garden, playground with sandbox, and access to an indoor gymnasium on rainy days. As a working parent, the afternoon extension program (12:00-2:30 pm) has been great. I do wish it ran through the summer, but I imagine this model helps prevent teacher burnout and keeps staff happy and engaged. While the preschool is housed in a church, the program itself is almost completely secular and welcoming to non religious families.

The FNS program is designed to meet the learning needs of children, but is not full time child care for a parent's work day. I think there is a big difference between school and babysitting. This is a developmentally appropriate school for 3 and 4 year olds, hence the limited time frame.

The community is unmatched- loving, thoughtful, supportive. A lot of family members don't understand the Waldorf method of teaching and make jokes, but my kids are both strong readers with curious minds about every subject. They offer Spanish, choir, strings, and band as part of their regular curriculum along with gardening, movement, etc. The students are taught in a way that offers a depth of understanding that other schools simply don't have the time to teach. Rather than doing a written project about catapults, for example, they actually build one. We love this school and community and are confident our kids will be very well prepared for what comes next.

It was also a significant financial investment for our family, one I was willing to make because I believed in what the school represented. Unfortunately, our kindergarten year ended in a way I never expected. The turning point was when I witnessed my daughter's teacher, Ms. Olga, physically pull/drag my daughter by her legs out of the classroom and leave her in the hallway. After talking with my daughter afterward, she told me this was not the first time Ms. Olga had pulled her out of the classroom that way and left her in the hallway. As a parent, that was extremely upsetting to learn. The school told me they investigated the incident. When I later asked about the outcome of that investigation, I was told the details were private information, but that Ms. Olga would no longer do that. I understand there may be privacy limitations regarding an employee, but being told essentially that it wouldn't happen again left me with more questions than reassurance, especially after learning from my daughter that it had happened before. I wasn't asking for anyone to be fired or trying to create a huge issue. I simply asked that my daughter be moved to another kindergarten classroom for the last six weeks of school. They offered Ms. Haley's class, but that class still shared time and activities with Ms. Olga's class. I asked for the other kindergarten classroom so my daughter could actually be separated from the situation, and the school would not accommodate that. My daughter ultimately stayed home for the remainder of kindergarten. What disappointed me even more was what happened afterward. My daughter and I were initially invited to the Fly Away Ceremony. After I emailed the school expressing my disappointment that they couldn't find another classroom for her, I was told it would be best if I did not attend. As a parent, I should be able to respectfully question a school's decision and advocate for my child without feeling like that makes me unwelcome. There are things about Waldorf education that I still love, and I know other families may have completely different experiences. I can only speak about ours. I just wish that when something this serious happened, there had been more accountability and more effort to find a solution for my daughter instead of her losing the last weeks of her kindergarten year.

The school is very small, classroom sizes are small, and this allows for the students to recieve the attention and individual support they deserve. Staff focus on safety and self regulation over anything else. Once those basic needs are met they work on educational and life skills. For such a small school there is an abundance of opportunities for the students onsite. Like a pool, laundromat, student kitchen, garden, and playground. Onsite occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavior therapy. Students also get to go out in the community to learn real world skills. Odyssey doesnt use food reinforcement but instead looks at more valuable rewards like prefferred items, activities and praise. They also focus on teaching students how to get they needs met in safe ways instead of using a punishment system. The staff and admin know every students name and build rapport and relationships because they truly care about the students they serve.

This review is about their school as I know nothing about their home facilities…read more This school is meant to cater to children in the Autism Spectrum or Autistic-like symptoms. This is their mission statement, "Odyssey Learning Center is committed to enhancing the lives of children with autism, using a collaborative approach to educate and nurture them in their journey towards independence with integrity and dignity." When you go visit to see if this is the school you want to bring your child to, things are always "perfect" as the classroom you will be checking out is informed prior to you getting there and even if a child is not behaving he/she is moved to a different classroom. If you are visiting and didn't go to the office, the minute any staff sees you they call the classroom your child is in to inform them that you have arrived. My son has a few behavioral issues as most if not all of the children at that school do. He acts the same way at home and I have NEVER had to resort to restraining and neither has anyone that worked with him before or after this school. While at Odyssey I would pick up my son some days exhausted to the point of falling asleep in the car, hungry and with bruises and nail marks embedded on his skin. Every time I expressed my concern to anyone there, they would brush me off and even lie about what had happened. Well as time went by and getting information from different sources whom I will not mention I started discovering disturbing things... If my son reached out and grabbed food from someone else's plate, his lunch was taken away from him so that he would not "steal". On numerous occasions staff would get upset at him and squeeze him by the arms leaving bruises or embedding nails til they opened skin. They rotate turns and the staff that worked with him in the AM was not the same as after lunch but I started noticing that every single time he worked with a specific girl, he was hurt. I even got into an argument with her in the class (all students were gone for the day) for which I was labeled as psycho for. She got fired recently... I know why and if Odyssey could respond honestly without getting into trouble they would now agree that the girl truly was sick in the head because what she got fired for could have even had her arrested. Once I picked my son up and he had what looked like a rug burn on his chin. Nobody knew what it was, how it happened. I was not taking that for an answer. They produced a false "incident report" having a new staff member sign it. I made a stink about that and had the teacher removed from that classroom also and my son continued at that school. Well eventually I found out that the children were being wrapped like burritos in giant yoga mats when they weren't behaving. I saw this a few times. They would call it "sensory". Let me explain something here... it is sensory if the child is in need of that pressure, done properly and for a specific amount of time. Oh and with sensory there aren't 2 women sitting on top of the child. I asked them if they were doing that only to find out that any time my son even looked like he was going to have a melt down he was wrapped. That kids were told "behave otherwise you are getting wrapped". That is not sensory, that is PUNISHMENT AND RESTRAINT! (I've enclosed pics of the mat bitten by restrained children all over the edges) Anyway I found out it was the wrapping that got my son hurt (rug burns on the chin). I can go on about this school, the NUTS that work there, their messed up doings, etc. but I'm surprised you have even read this far. If anyone wants any other information do not hesitate to contact me as I have NO problems telling you what they will not and I have PLENTY of witnesses that can back up anything I will tell you. Parents engaging in conversation is frowned upon and if any parents are talking to each other on campus, they are being monitored. In a meeting the principal lied to my face. She knew she was lying and I knew she was lying. That was very scary as she was bold enough to go ahead with her lie to cover her behind. The staff that works there (other than the teachers) does not need any prior experience working with special needs children. They are finger printed and a little background check is performed. PS when telling the San Juan Unified School District about Odyssey's practices their response was always that Odyssey was a private entity that they contracted with and that there was nothing they could do about anything. Well here... there should be no problems with me YELPING a private entity, A BUSINESS. And if anyone at Odyssey feels the need to address me, do it IN WRITING... choose your words wisely as I will make any and all responses public information. Your wrong doings have been kept quiet too long.
