Kalyan was a great attorney for a period of time. I started my own company and needed a reliable attorney who could help me and wouldn't take advantage of me. However, came a point in time when I asked him to review a letter of intent. I was expecting a brief review and a summarized write up of points that I could discuss with him and have him rewrite certain things. To my surprise, Kalyan burned through my entire $2500 retainer and billed me for an additional $1K+. I was absolutely shocked. Over $3500 for something that I was expecting to cost under $1000. Instead of doing what I asked, Kalyan spent the entire time telling me how he disagreed with certain terms and even tried to renegotiate the agreement. I made it very clear that I had agreed to what I had agreed to and his job was to make sure that the contract was written to enforce my agreement. I told Kalyan that I could not afford to pay more (keep in mind - we have to also draft an operating agreement and services agreement) and asked him to not go over 2 more billable hours for the LOI. Kalyan billed me for 4 more hours and handed me an incomplete version of the LOI, which wasn't anything near what I asked for. It included all of the changes that affect the structure of the deal which I negotiated, essentially changing the entire deal. I was nothing but polite and respectful with Kalyan, however, after slapping me with my last bill, terminated services with me. After consulting with other attorneys about this experience I was told that the way Kalyan handled the situation was unethical and questionable - to slap me with a huge bill then terminate me afterwards is suspicious.
