Let me start by saying that this company is fantastic and should be hired for your next project or repair. I have had the opportunity to work with them twice, once to do a small dryer vent repair/installation and once to replace all my major appliances, upgrade my home's electrical breaker boxes and repair/install new outlets. Both times, their professionalism, frequent communications, and monetary value for services provided were second to none! During projects things sometime do not go according to plan, but this company takes immediate action to correct any problem and to make sure things are set right. I will give you an example, during my appliance replacement, the microwave that was ordered from a vendor in NJ (I believe) was delivered to these folks and had sustained obvious damage during the shipment...not caused by them, but man, before lunch, they had procured the exact same make/model from a local provider which made sure that they did not fall behind schedule; their problem solving was done seamlessly, and took away all my worry about this major project. Really cannot say enough good things about this team....they are my go-to contractor when I need their expertise...do yourself a favor and make them your go-to contractor as well!! read more

I hired Pokorn to do demo and framing on an interior condo renovation project. It is fortunate that I kept the initial contracts small. Thankfully, I wasn't stuck with them for the whole project. I have experience in renovation and historical restoration, and am detail oriented, and had high hopes for a successful professional relationship. On the plus side, they were always responsive to my communications, and seemed to understand what needed to be done. On the minus side, I don't know where to begin. All of the work, except management, on our project was handled by sub-contactors, not direct employees of Pokorn. Adding that additional layer of management inflated the cost of the job significantly. Too many generals, not enough soldiers. Their subs are of varying quality. For example, one subcontractor framed for a new closet in a way that partially obstructed an adjacent door because of a measurement mistake on the architect's plans. The sub didn't think "Oh look. Something's not right. I should ask how to proceed". They just went ahead and built it, even though the drawn plans showed no obstruction, necessitating tearing out the mistake and rebuilding. They also put the subfloors down in the bathrooms before the plumbing drain work was done. The plans clearly showed the fixtures being relocated within the rooms. Something else to tear out. When they removed the subfloor I saw that the bathroom vent duct for the bathroom below had very obviously been crushed (stepped on at the joist), which is why the bathroom vent below had no air flow. If the subfloor hadn't needed to be torn out, this air flow problem could have been difficult to diagnose and expensive to fix later on. Somehow all the generals didn't notice the substandard work. All these blunders would be comical if they weren't so frustrating. Pokorn did correct their mistakes after I pointed them out and asked them to, which is the only reason they got 2 stars. I should not have to do this work: it's their responsibility. Read their contract carefully before signing. It is written in a way that keeps too much power in their hands. They are strict about expecting payment within 72 hours of their submitting an invoice, even if they've screwed up and not yet corrected the work being invoiced. If you're late in paying, they can immediately stop work and require an extra $500 to start up again. You can make the payment "under protest", but then have to trust that they will fix the issue. To their credit, they always did, but I was upset that I had to trust a company that was messing up left and right. Why should this even have to happen in the first place? As is pretty standard, they ask for periodic payments as work progresses. They are the sole determiners of when a phase is substantially completed, which is not unusual, but ask for payment at a point when other contactors I've worked with (and I) would have considered the phase only partially completed. These examples do not exhaust the deficiencies or problems experienced during the short time I employed Pokorn. Let the buyer beware. read more

Had a car drive through my fence into my shed the week of Thanksgiving. Called to get a quote to assess damage, either repair or replace my 17x20 ft shed. Owner refused, as it wasn't worth their time to have an estimate sent to insurance to not be picked for the job. This was stated in an incredibly rude and condescending tone, as if my phone call alone cost him time and money. Definitely left a bad impression and I will not bother seeking them out for any other services for my home. read more

I am a NYC resident who is fortunate enough to own a condo in New Orleans' Warehouse District which needed a total bathroom renovation. I chose Pokorn Construction late April 2023 to do this tub to walk in shower conversion after visiting their website and seeing impressive photos of a condo that they had renovated in my building. Christian Pokorn, owner of this company, took a hands on and personal interest in this project and what a win this was for me. From my initial in-person meeting arranged via email and at my convenience, I found Christian and his condo specialist, Reggie Abaeo, to be very pleasant, patient and most accomodating. I received an honest and most importantly, accurate estimate with a straight forward contract. Christian graciously drove me to a nearby Floor Tile superstore where I was easily able to make my selections which he then forwarded a portfolio of fixtures needed. It turned out to be exactly what I wanted! Work began in earnest late May when Reggie and his talented crew came and delivered this beautiful custom bathroom for me. I received updates and photos of the work as it progressed and was billed as each stage completed. When I did the final walkthrough in August, I was very pleased as the estimate turned out to be spot on and without any surprises. I've waited seven years to remodel my home so I could save the cash to get all the upgrades I want. Called Pokorn about 6 weeks before Ida and told Christian what I wanted done: kitchen counter replaced, reface cabinets, new siding for entire home, and new windows. Once I gave him my zip code (I live in the east), he said he'd call me back. Three months later, I never heard back. I didn't bother to call again. Meanwhile, I found plenty of reputable contractors who DO want my cash. Thao with PRISM construction (with perfect, 5 star reviews on EVERY site, including yelp) won the $40,000 job. Christian and Lee are absolutely the best. When we built our back porch, they walked us through every step of the planning process and never made us feel like a change was a burden. Their work teams were all wonderful, efficient, and trustworthy. Additionally, after Hurricane Ida, they even came by to see how the porch (recently finished) had fared in the storm. Despite taking on a giant tree branch (which also toppled a fence), none of the construction was damaged. They know how to build stuff! They then put us on the books for our Hurricane Ida repairs (fence, new floors, etc.). This is a sad review to post. I've known Christian for 3 years and have used him on several home repair and update projects. The latest project was a garage remodel which included installation of two new windows, insulation, and leveling our floor and applying an epoxy coating. This project started in November of 2018. The first phase was clearing out old cabinets in the garage and prepping the walls for the insulation to be sprayed. I asked Christian what would go over the insulation to make it aesthetically pleasing. He told me you could shave the insulation flat then paint over it. Not having ever experienced this process I took his word for it. The finished area looked like dry foam that could not be painted over. He then put up plywood over the insulation and claimed he was giving me this for free since I was a good customer, only to find out later that he estimated the cost to be $1,700 for labor and materials. Seriously? To put plywood on just the walls of a 250sq ft garage? Next were the windows. I was out of town when these were installed, only to return and find that one of them wouldn't open at all. He came out after a month had gone by and worked on it for over an hour, only to have it break again. After another month an employee that I had never met came out and fixed it in 2 min. telling me it was a simple lever that needed to be adjusted. Why Christian didn't know this is strange. Next was the floor. The cement was laid and not allowed to dry for the appropriate amount of time, meaning 24 hours instead of 30 days! So the epoxy that was laid over it never adhered. The Sherwin Williams rep for the epoxy product came out after I called to tell him about the flaking, and he confirmed that the cement was the issue, and that nothing, not even cement paint would adhere to it. After bringing this to Christian's attention, he gave me a check for the amount of two boxes of epoxy and told me to have the current contractors I have working for me to fix the issue.I'm now left with a peeling floor I can't do anything with except put a floating floor over the entire area. This will definitely cost more than two boxes of epoxy! This was a very straightforward project that went to hell in a hand basket with an extremely passive resolution on his part. The confusion for me is why he never had the human decency to come here and talk with me face to face so we can constructively come up with a solution. All I received were apologies from his employees saying how embarrassed they were with the job they did. And he wonders why I hired other contractors for the remainder of our house project. Wow! 6 months to complete a super simple garage remodel and it's still a mess. Seriously the most unprofessional business practices I have ever encountered. If I could give a zero star rating I would. Treat people with respect and professionalism Christian! That's the foundation of a successful business! read more

Mr. Pokorn was nice enough to send me a personal message and referred me to someone else who would be less expensive. I greatly appreciate the gesture but I think I'll just do everything myself, especially after the harassment I received after my original review. Mr. Pokorn gave me an explanation of how he figured the costs but as an industrial engineer, my entire job is nothing but dealing with numbers in all business capacities, and I can't for the life of me figure out how charging nearly $300 to clean a gutter could possibly be justified. But, their balance sheets and cost/benefit analysis are none of my business. Also, you should all be aware, about two hours after posting my original review, someone (Yelp name is Atom B.) created an account just to harass me because they didn't like it. I actually had to block the person because they wouldn't leave me alone. Now, it could have just been a troll but it is AWFULLY suspicious that the Atom B. account was created the same day as my review and there has been no other activity on his/her account...at all...just sayin'... If it wasn't someone associated with this company, Pokorn, they should probably let Yelp know. Because now there is absolutely no chance this company will ever get my business after being harassed like that. We were in the inspection period for a new home we were interested in buying and knew there were some big issues that we needed to discuss with the seller before we could move forward with an offer. Christian was referred by a friend and he met us at the house the same day I called him. We went through every inch of the house together and he explained every problem -- major and minor -- that we would have to address if we purchased the house. Christian is extremely knowledgeable about all areas of construction and was so nice, patient and helpful throughout the process. We ended up purchasing the home, but not before negotiating thousands of dollars off the sale price based on the report he provided. I contacted Christian to provide me with an estimate for some roof work and remodeling of a bathroom. He showed up on time to our appointment, seemed knowledgeable, and answered my questions (all things I appreciated- which is why I'm giving 2stars). I provided my email per his request to send me the estimate but I still have not received anything from him and it has been about 2-3weeks. I contacted him via text message (as that was how we had communicated prior) asking about the estimate but he never responded... I guess he didn't want my business? Update- I told you up front that I was getting the estimate as the cost of this remodel was an essential part of my decision to buy the house. Before you left you asked for my email and did not say you could not provide me with an estimate I would not have wasted either of our times. read more

I have used Pokorn for two projects so far and I could not be more happy with the outcome on both. They installed a driveway and handled the entire process (permit and all). Most recently, they remodeled my master bedroom. It has made a use difference in our quality of life. We had noise and light issues in our bedroom that made it difficult to sleep Christian's knowledge of what to do is so reassuring when trying to resolve any issue with a house. I don't envision a circumstance where I would use anyone other than Christian and Pokorn for any projects on my home. read more

I do not recommend Pokorn Construction Co. (Pokorn). We hired them to do a bathroom remodel which they estimated would take about a month to complete. Although they started demolition just a few days after we signed the contract, they have yet to finish the job. A lot of work was done in the first 3-4 weeks, about 70-80% of the job. But then virtually no work was done for the next 4 weeks, although workmen would occasionally drop in sporadically for an hour or so. We asked several times about the schedule and were never given a definitive answer, but were told that the shower panel had been ordered on April 19 (one month after the job was started) and that it would arrive shortly. It arrived May 11. We were then told that Fed Ex broke the panel upon delivery (at the end of week 8). Midweek of week 9, workmen arrived to complete the punchlist that we had put together. According to our contract, the punchlist was to be completed with 10 days. During the week 9 work, the shower fixture was damaged by a reaction with the chemical being used to clean off a thick layer of grout that had been left to dry and harden for 5 weeks. The shower fixture had to be reordered and replaced along with a shower tile that had been broken during that same work. At the beginning of week 10, Pokorn hired a subcontractor to reorder and install the glass shower panel. No schedule for that yet. We are now at the beginning of week 11. Last week we were told they would come on Friday to complete the punchlist. Late Friday, they postponed the work until Saturday. They could not complete the work on Saturday, but promised to come on Monday to finish. Today is Monday and noone has shown up or called. To be continued.... UPDATE The remodel was halted during the 12th week because we were out of town, but was completed by Wednesday of the 13th week. We were surprised by the extra charge of $300 on the final invoice to pay the shower panel subcontractor. We had anticipated that Pokorn would absorb any additional cost to expedite delivery as a good customer service practice since the original panel was not ordered until a month into the project and was broken upon receipt (2 months after project start). Overall, this has been a very unpleasant experience with multiple instances of rework due to defective initial installation. There are several items that we will just have to live with because they were too time-consuming to correct: the curb on which the shower panel rests is not level, tilting outward, causing water to pool against the panel and drain onto the floor; the hot and cold water supplies in the shower are reversed; the linen space is not square and not plumb, requiring us to custom build trapezoidal-shaped shelves to fit the space and leave a door off so that it is not so obvious that the space is not plumb; the lack of one of the promised hand rails in the shower because 2 tries resulted in broken tiles - we were not willing to attempt a third time; the modern P-trap that we bought and requested be installed was not put in because they did not pre-plan the proper alignment and it was too difficult to retrofit. There was a lack of quality control and a lack of supervision after the first couple of weeks of this job. We expected better based on the Yelp reviews we had seen. read more

KITCHEN FLOOR is now gorgeous and well supported. I was feeling "soft spots" in my kitchen floor and was concerned that there was moisture beneath! Christian came promptly and evaluated the floor. He gave me an estimate that was approximately $10/sq ft. for the labour & materials and I would get the actual flooring material (He provided all the other sub-floor material, and also found some gorgeous thresholds that matched and really improved the look!!). The 2 people who did the work were very smart, articulate and real problem-solvers (ubelievaly well educated!!), and Christian was never too far away so they could call for consultation or support. If I had any questions about the process Ly answered them thoroughly and I had no concerns about leaving the house while they were here. Christian was also good at explaining the method and outcome they were pursuing. The only reason for a resuced star was the cleaning we ended up doing. The subfloor was a nightmare. Tile on top of tile on top of wierdo plywod with an unexpected hle in the floor. Jackerhammering up the mortar was rough. Turns out...Plaster dust is a beast, and there was a lot of it. They tried to create a plastic barrier, but it just couldn't hold up. After they were finished I noticed an extremely small detail that I wanted fixed (being a little fussy admittedly) and they came back and finished, even doing a little extra painting to make it match. They are very concerned with the customer being pleased with all their work, and he never deviated from the estimate, even handling little details to make the whole thing work!! I would highly recommend this company, and if there is anything else that needs doing in the house, I will definitely give them a call. read more

Unfortunately I cannot give the review I would like to. Pokorn construction is now banned from my condo building. This is due to his company cutting a fire alarm system wire (which affected the entire building) and then his not paying the Honeywell invoice until we got lawyers involved months later at which time he paid only half of the $2100 invoice, causing me to pay the other half. When it happened Christian Pokorn assured me he would take care of it but then, even after 6 months, did not. I am very disappointed in his ethics. read more

I don't like to write this negative review because I liked Christian (hence the two stars), but whoever he had do work for me is costing me a lot. I hired them to do a series of things including a platform on my roof for AC units. Rather than properly bolting, they nailed through the shingles on my flat roof, causing me so much hassle and grief with roof leaks and other damage. I've had a roofer work on it extensively but now I just have to pull the platform off and have the entire roof redone due to the damage caused. Further I have to have the platform completely redone because they didn't create a platform that can withstand weather or hold things properly (incorrect materials used). I'm very upset about the thousands of dollars of damage caused by this poor work. I realize now that I should have been up on the roof seeing what they were doing and demanding it be fixed properly, but I had a job and couldn't watch them nail holes. I shouldn't have had to. If they didn't know what they were doing, they should have either told me and declined the job or gotten the information from a reputable source. Now I'm looking at thousands of dollars in repair costs and am very upset. read more

Having had some bad experiences with contractors in this past, i braced for this worst again this time. I didn't need to. Had some various construction and maintenance work done by Pokorn Construction. Found them to be very professional: arriving when promised, etc. For a NOLA contractor to (1) return phone calls regularly, (2) appear when promised, and (3) get a quote/estimate in short order are almost miraculous, and Pokorn did all three. Beyond the great service, the work was done really well, and exactly as promised. No surprises, no unexpected changes. We hired Christian and his team to carpentry, woodwork and painting in our home - everything from building a banquette to staining the treads on our stairs. We were very pleased with the craftsmanship and their customer service. Pokorn is more expensive than most other contractors we've hired. (When you live in a 129 year old building, you hire a lot of contractors.) But the added cost was more than worth it for a renovation job well done. It involved picking up some Home Improvement type that was only available at a store in New Orleans, breaking it down, and then shipping it up to me in Ohio. I chose Christian and his company because of the many positive reviews here on Yelp. Christian was able to assign one of his top handyman to the project, and it was completed flawlessly and on time and on budget. We could not be happier with how things went. He even made things simpler for me by paying for the merchandise and the shipping himself, and then just invoicing me one grand total, which was very convenient and much appreciated. I would thoroughly recommend Christian and his Construction Company on any projects and if I lived in the New Orleans area, he would be the first person I would get in touch with if I had need of a handyman or a general contractor! read more

Had a nearly 50,000 dollar budget to do siding repair, insulation, paint, adding a door and a window, some minor foundation work, and building a small deck. If that went well had another 50,000 dollar budget for kitchen and bath. This is absolutely poor business and a tremendous waste of people's time. I can't recommend people who don't even keep their word of giving you an estimate nor communicating any reason why. read more

I found them on Yelp for a bathroom tile job. In comparison to other jobs he's done on his website, our job is on the smaller end. He didn't treat it any differently. Christian, the owner, was great with scheduling the estimate, and went above and beyond with the quote. He was very thorough with explaining everything and called when he was running late. We got two site visits, and a quote within a week and a half from the first call. We ended up not using him as the quote was on the higher end of other estimates. I'm sure the work would have been worth it and he showed up when he said he was going to. I believe "you get what you pay for" would apply to them. They are the real deal, we just couldn't afford it. read more
