One Man and a Tool Box - Handyman Near Me - Elmwood, Louisiana

I used One Man and a Tool Box for two things. One was to fix a French door we had at our house that takes in water with big rains. The other was to fix the door knob to our outside gate. I forgot the guys name, but he was nice enough. I explained both problems to him and what I was interested in. We went back and forth about the French doors. I was interested in updating and upgrading my weather stripping but he assured me that was not the problem. It was my door jam that was keeping my door from shutting completely. Gate in his estimation was an easy fix. I cannot remember if he spent half the day or the whole day fixing both issues but by the end of the day, neither was fixed. Once he fixed the door jam, he stated that something else was really the problem but definitely not the weather stripping. I cannot remember the details, but the french doors needed more work. And the gate, he continued to run into similar hiccups. I get it. Sometimes when you look at a problem especially with construction, it's a process of diagnosis and fixing. But in this scenario, he was 0-2. To his credit (although I did give him some firm coaxing), he came back the next day and fixed the gate knob which continues to work well. All in all, One Man and a Tool Box was a let down. I love having a guy who can come to your house and do small jobs. The price point was already a bit high and the results didn't pan out. Search for a good handyman continues. read more

Our experience was the same as Karen L.'s. This is not a professional handyman service. The guy they sent was nice but clearly not a handyman. We hired OMTB to adjust and paint two exterior doors. After the first day of work, he hadn't properly adjusted the door and managed to only put one coat of paint on it (the door was already primed). He didn't bother to remove any of the hardware or weather stripping so there are little white spots peeking through. It basically took him six hours to half-ass a single coat of paint on one door. I relayed all this to OMTB and they understood but asked to give the guy a chance to correct the mistakes. He came back this morning. He didn't seem to understand that you should sand glossy paint before applying another coat, refused to remove the hardware before painting (literally two screws and the doorknob's out of the way) and didn't quite get how to make basic adjustments to a door so it properly latched. To top it off, about twenty minutes after being here this morning, he left without saying anything. I eventually called the office to see what was up (Lowes run to fetch sandpaper?) and found out he didn't think he could do the job so he took off. They offered to send someone else out but I (of course) declined. My understanding is he wasn't a OMTB employee but that they hire independent contractors to do the actual work. So it's possible it's all a crapshoot and you might get someone competent, but how do you express that in the initial call? "Hi, yes, I'd like to get some doors painted, and please send someone out who actually knows what they're doing." I thought I could trust them to choose competent, experienced people to do their work, but I was wrong. So, if you like wasting multiple days meeting someone who doesn't have even have basic handyman knowledge, being left in the dark as to what's going on, and then figuring out what to do with your half-painted, still sticking door, give OMTB a call. Otherwise I'd look elsewhere for your handyman needs. read more

The gentleman they sent was very nice, but did not have the skills or the tools to do the work. He went to Home Depot several times while on the clock. We were charged 2 full days and only received 6 hours of work. The two toilets he "fixed", are not fixed. Both have the same problems as before. The handyman cleaned mold from a bedroom and hung 1 picture. I was charged $1600!!!!!!! Save your money and hire licensed professionals to come out individually. Also, the lady who answers the phone and makes appointments is rude and has difficulty with scheduling the work. read more

I sent them an email and they called me back with in an hour or so! And with 24 hours I had someone scheduled to come by the house and give me an estimate. A week later the work started! Now this timeline might not be the norm but for me it was great! I had called a half a dozen independent contractors over a period of months to look at various carpentry repairs and either got zero response or "let me get back to you when I'm less busy." Then my tenants moved out of the rental side of my house so work needed to be done ASAP. Randy was prompt and made an early morning call so I could make it to work, almost on time. He wrote up a quote. Their automated system for quotes and acceptance is a tadbit clunky but I'll take technology where I can get it. Everything was typed out and readable. The man who did the carpentry was polite and meticulous! I'm sure the doors he repaired haven't looked so well in 100 years. Then the painter came in and took care of the rest. Will definitely use them again. I do think their prices might be higher than hiring an independent. But they also show up and do the work when and how they promised. So definitely worth it. Bought a house and for years our Attic was a blight, I'd refuse to go up there or even use the space. Finally decided to enlist some help to get the space cleaned up and drywalled in to make the space usable. Installed insulation, drywall and sealed up allllllll the crevices. My husband and I were in need of redoing our front porch.Having a rotting front porch wasn't cutting it on any level.I called One Man and a Tool Box.A technician was sent out(truly this gentleman was more like a skilled craftsman,who takes his profession seriously).We were given a reasonable price and a time frame for the job to be completed.The job was scheduled and the work was done efficiently and with professionalism.The old decking was removed,old runners were replaced with new runners.The composite decking was put down.We requested that the exterior beams be wrapped w/white aluminum metal.To give the porch a more finished look.The handrails we're repainted and reinstalled.And all debris was hauled away.It was very evident to my husband and myself that this wasn't this gentlemen's first rodeo.We will be using One Man and a ToolBox again,no doubt.DW read more

Was able to get an appointment the same week and was able to get my floors repaired and my threshold replaced and new weather stripping added to my door. I was thinking of hiring these people to do a small repair job for me. I was informed that they charge $175 for an estimate. Wait, what??? $175 just for an estimate? They apply the $175 to the final cost if they do the work for you, but if not, you're out the money. Their website states that they give free estimates, but that's obviously not the case anymore. From the initial call with Kellie, the free estimate, showing up on time, to the work being completed; I could not have been happier. I needed a wooden fence gate fixed and a damaged hurricane shutter (23 feet off the ground) removed. Randy did an amazing job, including hauling off the old shutter. You may be able to find a cheaper handyman, but you will not find one that is more professional or more competent than the team at One Man and a Tool Box. read more

I cannot say enough about the workmanship and the craftsmanship of the workers at this company. My husband and I had a bathroom from hell we were trying to renovate. In small Metairie cottages you run into a lot of problems and the carpenters and drywall and painters that were hired did such an amazing job making an unsquare bathroom square - This is a major problem when you're trying to set a new shower and install windows. After we also hired them to repaint our entire house. They worked so clean and so fast - and our house looks so beautiful. Thank you so much to the team that was at our house. I have had the pleasure of using One Man and a Toolbox on a few occasions. From what I would consider in-depth Construction to minimal fixes here and there. Sadly I have never taken the time to write a review for them. Most recently, With the Wind driven storms , I have needed to call on them again . I can't say enough about this company . Henry coming out to once again stand our fence up to Jason who is just an amazing person outside of his skills . They have always been helpful in every way , accommodating to our situations and life issues , trustworthy, and extremely skilled! It's difficult to come by skilled, trustworthy help When Storms come about , but I am so very grateful that we have learned about One Man and a Toolbox. A friend who relocated to Texas after Hurricane Katrina requested my assistance to have some small repair jobs done on a house she recently inherited in Metairie, This One Man and a Tool Box Company was willing to do the small repairs and deal with the out of town owner for payment. Jeremy was the technician who came to the house to perform the work .Jeremy was punctual, knowledgeable and very honest. Jeremy helped with an older car that needed a battery jump and air for the tires, painting a small water spot on the ceiling, fixing an issue with a toilet, some cosmetic concerns and was able to properly diagnosis an issue with a wall switch and kitchen lights. Told me he would have an estimate in about a week and could start work in about 3 weeks. After getting the run around for over a month, never did get an estimate or a straight answer about the project. Very disappointed. read more

I hired One Man and a Toolbox to repair some siding and door frames that were water damaged on the front of my home. Initially, they were very responsive and friendly, and sent a man named Leonard. He looked at the work, gave me a reasonable quote, and promised to return when I had pressure washed the home. I then had trouble getting in touch with him for several weeks, at which point I called the main office and was told that he no longer worked there. They gave me the number for another employee, Kennedy, who came out to the house and quoted me $100 more for the same job. I accepted because I needed the work done immediately before it started to mold. It took him several weeks to schedule a time to actually do the work, and when he did, he only did about a quarter of the work that was expected, gave me a flyer for his personal business, and had me sign a contract with his personal business stationary instead of One Man and a Toolbox. I called the office afterward and was told that he had ALSO been fired. I talked to the owner of the company because I was upset that the job hadn't been completed, and was told that it was MY responsibility to call the office to find out that he was fired, and that basically there was nothing they could do for me. Furthermore, the first guy that came out (Leonard) was fired in January even though he came to my house and had me sign a One Man and a Toolbox contract in February but still they claimed no responsibility for that. So basically, I'm stuck with a half done job and as an elementary school teacher, cannot afford to hire someone else to complete the job at this time. I am VERY disappointed with One Man and a Toolbox and would NEVER recommend someone use this company. read more
