I debated whether or not to leave a review here because it will be based entirely off of one interaction. That being said, it was so positive, I've got to do it. Last summer, after having lived in Portland only a few weeks, my bike was stolen out of a secure bike storage area at my apartment complex. I was told by coworkers I'd never see it again and that it probably wasn't even worth filing a police report. After a bit of convincing by one person, I figured it couldn't hurt to file a report anyways (worst case it's a waste of time, best case, I get my hike back). Anyways, I filed the report, bought a new bike, and forgot all about it until a few weeks ago when I got a call from officer Dave Sanders. Dave did some good old fashion police work, arrested one bike thief, and was able to track down a stash of bikes at a homeless camp. Sure enough, one of the bikes found was mine. Dave was incredibly friendly during the whole process. He even waited around after his shift to get my bike back to me then, to save me having to get it out of evidence which would have added some extra legwork on my end. When I showed up to get the bike, he helped me get it registered on Project 529 (great way to keep tabs on your bike if this sort of thing ever happens). That about sums it up. I'm still speechless they were able to find my bike. Not only that, the thief even put new grips on it, and it came back in better condition than when I lost it! One more thing: Dave said the vast majority of bikes they recover end up getting auctioned off because people don't file reports when their bikes are stolen. File that report! You can do it online and it only takes 5 minutes. read more

As a recently sworn-in police recruit with a documented history of serious heart conditions and multiple prior cardiac surgeries, I entered the academy process with both commitment and vulnerability. During training, I experienced alarming symptoms, including tasting blood, and raised concerns about my health. I did not feel there was meaningful follow-up, individualized assessment, or clear coordination to ensure that my medical condition was being fully evaluated in light of the physical and academic demands placed upon me. Given my documented medical history, I found this deeply concerning. Police organizations appropriately hold recruits to high standards of performance, discipline, and accountability. Those same standards of care, communication, and attentiveness to serious medical concerns should apply internally as well. When someone's health, career, and reputation are all at stake simultaneously, there should be a clear and transparent process that prioritizes both readiness and well-being. I hope future recruits with documented medical histories receive thorough, proactive engagement when concerns are raised read more

My daughter lives in Portland. Her car broke down in the middle of a busy road. Three young ladies were pushing a car out of an intersection and an officer drove right by. No aid offered I was just in Detroit and was met with please and thank you by officers and randomly walking down street, was greeted with "have a nice day" Needless to say ,, I would go back to Detroit in a heart beat, as far as Portland does, can't convince my daughter to get out of Portland fast enough Talk about a crime!! It has become apparent that the police department is not hiring high grade officers. Many officers lack the training to handle a wide range of situations effectively. There have been multiple instances where officers appear unprepared for handling complex interactions, showing a lack of assertiveness, common sense, proper communication skills, and failing to de-escalate and understand situations appropriately. This has led to both ineffective responses and, in some cases, worsened situations unnecessarily. Common sense and assertiveness should be a high priority. HIRE AN OLD SCHOOL EX COP (EAST COAST) TO RECRUIT AND FORMULATE A TRAINING PROGRAM AND GET THESE OFFICERS FIT AND OUT OF BEING SECURITY GUARD, CAR TROLLERS AND LEAVE OUT BOY SCOUTS except for very specified situations. Furthermore, there seems to be a troubling tendency for law enforcement to focus its efforts predominantly on neighborhoods perceived as high-crime areas, while neglecting to properly address crimes occurring in other regions. This disproportionate allocation of resources leaves certain neighborhoods feeling underserved, even though they too experience issues ranging from property crimes to disturbances and more serious offenses. This selective attention to certain neighborhoods risks undermining trust in law enforcement and contributes to a perception of inequality and injustice among residents in lower-priority areas. What we have are high grade security guards who work an 8-5 from their cars, never on foot ( most couldn't even run a mile), act like a boy scout where clearly they need to overpower the situation. They're frankly, gullible. I recently was a witness to a horrific accident and informed the police that one of the vehicles blew through the red light at a high speed. HIS RESPONSE: "Yeah, sometimes that happens." They (both) officers didn't even have any idea what people do (without an officer) in an accident. They treated the cause of accident individual like a friend that should have been tested for alcohol/drugs or other traffic infractions. I had to tell them that the other party needed to collect license, insurance, registration and I had to encourage the officer to look at expiration dates. RESPONSE: "We're just here to make sure everyone is alright." WHAT?!!!! When prompted to test for intoxication, his response was, " that's perfume, she's wearing, a lot perfume." This guy needs to sit down and watch real cop reels for 5 days!!!! Apart from these 2 police officers, I challenge the force to take a pop quiz on what they should do if they are ever in an accident with 1 or more cars. I guarantee more than 50% would fail. The best however was a recent call about a potential assault/rape with a woman pleading for help, physical appearance/clothing "appeared" normal, but she appeared like she had been given something. She was walking down the street, near a park. The police showed up 30 min later and told me they "drove" around for 10 minutes but couldn't find her.. They were first 30.min late and I then asked if they had "WALKED" through the park. Imagine the response. DON'T SEND 20 OFFICERS TO 1 GUN SCENE OR 20 OFFICERS TO 1 KNIFE SCENE AND DEPLETE YOUR SMALL FORCE. TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN! SE Precinct needs an attitude adjustment. Called 911 for help & safety regarding threatening trespasser and very rude & entitled dispatcher would not send out a unit. I ended up hanging up on her. Use PPD at your own discretion. Just get yourself to a safe space till all potential harm has left area. It's each person for themselves out here in the wilds of outer SE Portland. read more

So far, my interactions with the Police have been friendly and professional. That could have something to do with the fact that I like to work on my laptop at the Starbucks across the street from the Police Station. They also tend to order to "normal" drinks and avoid the Unicorn, fru-fru whipped cream drinks with cherries on top (although I do catch them doing that every once in a while too). The city non emergency and responce personel are extremely understaffed and next to useless if you need help either reporting a situation or with cops just never showing up to clearly dangerous situations requiring the police. Tonight I tried reporting an out of state car possibly stolen left for a week which now was broken into and had what looked like a body in the back. I was protesting the bureau of Indian affairs when a woman backed into my car bent my license plate up. I've tried to do a report it as a driver not doing her duties and my treatment by the police officers was not acceptable I've been sent a link to download my video but I'm not a cop I don't have a log on. or a password to do this making it impossible for me to prove my case .I'm going to try to add my video on here and the damage is done to my front license plate. After inspecting my plate I realize there are two bolts on the back side of my plate that punched through my license plate causing the holes.that the officers are asking about. Now I'm trying to report a crime stoppers tip about an assault. Where the dispatcher on the phone was very abrasive you cannot leave a tip on crime stoppers without leaving a lot of information that some of the questions I couldn't even answer. How are you supposed to leave a tip. Crime stoppers tip line is disconnected. I tried to leave a crime stoppers tip on Facebook. Where after I left the tip. It said the messages are not monitored. I recently did a ride along with a central precinct officer and found not only he, but all the other officers I encountered that evening to be kind, fair, and professional. At no point did I see any officer be rude or unprofessional with any citizens we encountered, even if those citizens were less than kind to the police. Honestly, I was very impressed at the current state of our police force. I'm sure they have their issues, but I certainly did not see them and instead found friendly, kind, and genuine men and women that seemed to genuinely care for the city they patrol. read more

Some people hate cops - some people say they will never "snitch", some people place loyalty to those would do them harm over those who would protect them. Ride along with these officers on a Friday or Saturday night in the North or Central precinct before you decide you hate cops or hate what they stand for. Imagine living in a society without police influence, protection, and presence...then realize that it isn't a society at all. Im really disappointed in the smug entitled attitude the newer police officers are exhibiting. It is a new generation of who cares, its all about me and if I get around to it or maybe I will follow up. There is a huge disconnect going on at the PPB and it has worsened over the years. I believe east precinct is the worst and the best is north they are much more helpful than east. There is a vast difference in attitude and training between the two precincts. The worst police force in the country. I'm trying to report information about a police officer that was hit by stolen Chevrolet truck the dispatcher tells me that he may not get it to the right people. And wants to argue with me about who to report it to when I'm trying to report it to the man that answers the phone. Very abrasive and hard to deal with. I had my 66 Super Sport stolen about 30 years ago I reported where it was to these officers. They would not investigate the car they would not even look at the guy and told me he probably bought it legal. This was a rare car I never saw another one in Portland that look like it and all the sudden the guy shows up with my stolen car in the police will not do anything. Over the years I found out who was involved in this theft and they've stolen other Chevys in the neighborhoods and it was kind of ironic that the guy disappeared right in the neighborhood where my car was stolen and several other Chevys. I expect an investigation on my end stolen car I could tell them who had it and where it went and they could track it through the DMV but they will not do it. These are the boys that ran your officer over so maybe this is a little karma for you. Cuz if you had done something 30 years ago they wouldn't be out stealing them today read more

I wanted to share how impressed I am with the Portland Police Dept, in particular Officer Marcum. I live in LA and have a sister that was missing in Portland who I ended up filling out a missing person report in LA since this is also where my sister lives. Within an hour Noho Police (in LA) had communicated with Portland and I received a called from Officer Marcum (Portland PD) to ask me further questions. Within just a few hours he located my sister. He went above and beyond to find her and also his follow through was exceptional. He even continued to check up on my sister who was only a few days later in the Portland Hospital. What a caring, compassionate human he is. Portland should feel proud and safer with cops like this! Thanks a million Officer Marcum. read more

I'll keep this away from riot cops because it's kind of not the usual things they do. I've had a ton of experience with police departments all over the US. The best experience I've had was in Portland. The PPB has been, with the exception of two officers in particular, always followed the rules with me. They stop me on the street and try to jam me up. I say you have no probable cause ask walk away and that's that. They should not be trying that shit in the first place that's why no more stars. But look I was selling heroin and they were well aware so all things considered not too bad. I don't do that shit anymore. The only problem I had was this guy Slyder, he's a POS that likes to hurt people and will violate your rights and lie about it. Also he stole money from me many times. Not as much as Valadez though he got me for 1000s. There were some that would stop and talk to see if I was okay too so. Sitting in Taco Bell @ 9350 SE Stark st. when two officers walk in responding to an alarm going off. The one officer walked up to the counter and asked the woman who is making food about the alarm. Obviously she would not be the person they speak to. Instead of asking for the manager of the store the office (looking completely annoyed) turns around to walk out, while telling his coworker officer (where EVERYONE CAN HEAR HIM) "the employees here have the IQ of squirrels". I found a wallet last night, not the type of person to do anything but turn it in. On my arrival the officer seemed bothered by me. Asked me why I didn't turn it into the leasing office Instead. I informed him that there's tons of people who walk by (theres also tons of college kids partying all night) and there was a hotel key in the wallet, I thought the police would be able to do a better job tracking the person down as there was no address in the wallet. (It belonged to a non us resident & seems to belong to 2 or 3 brothers) I wasn't expecting a reward or a parade of what a great job I've done finding some ones wallet. My wallet was stolen once & they took everything and went on a shopping spree, figured I'd do them a favor by turning it in to authorities in hopes they will be reunited one day. I felt worse for bringing it into the police than if I had just left it on the ground. Attitudes go along way, I hope he's confused by me just as much as I'm confused by him. read more

I had the misfortune of getting to know a few of these individuals (not in police custody). It was definitely the good o' boys club and the females ate their own. Downright unfriendly and non-inclusive. The social climate and dynamics of their interactions leaves no one wondering how they earned their reputation. Ego driven individuals with the need to control every situation. They aren't trusted or respected by most in the community due to their propensity for excessive force and gun violence. I would never make the conscious decision to interact with any member of the Portland police in anything other than a professional setting. The people attracted to these positions are not the kind of people I want influencing my life. Their demeanor in general is not an appropriate representation of the Portland community. It is really sad when the community can't trust the police. I am a pro police and military, but I cannot stand behind what I have seen. They are an embarrassment. read more
