It's an historic building, designed by Maui-born architect CW Dickey, and opened in August 1929. It was the first public library in Maui County, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Inside you'll find a great selection of books in all genres, with varying displays of selected works that relate to current events or celebrations, and a staff of friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful librarians eager to help you get the most out of your library experience. There are adult and keiki reading rooms, a rack of books for sale (proceeds benefit the library), magazines, and much more. New automated checkout stations are super convenient and easy to use and offer you the choice of printed or emailed receipt for checked out items. As with all branches of the state library system, you can use their app to request and place holds on items and pick them up here (or any other location). The app also lets you see your due dates for checked out items, renew any if needed, and see where you are in line for items you've requested. The Wailuku library may not be physically huge, but it's definitely punching above its weight and providing great service to the community.

I've driven by a million gazillion times and today was the first time I've ever been inside. It clearly is historic and what a gem. Parking is on the street or in the County parking lot across the street. There is a crosswalk and a ramp in the back for handicapped and strollers. I have fond memories of going to my local hometown library as a child so I hope to do the same for my little blessing. The librarians and everyone were so nice. There is also a little one floor elevator to get down to the keiki area. I love that they have their own space. It is super cute. I can see so many more trips in the future with my little one. Not the fanciest library but still wonderful and for someone who loves books like me, it is one of my happy places.

The old station was that sunken, 2-level building right next to the county building and currently houses the county permits office. They moved from those cramped quarters to their current spot on Mahalani Street in the mid 80's. Back then, you could literally walk through the entire building as no doors were key-controlled. Not anymore. Today, the public has access only to the receiving desk and traffic sections. POSITIVE EXPERIENCES: Calling 911 has been quick and efficient. Like other reviewers have stated, I too have gotten a condescending operator on the line, but it is a high-stress job with measly pay, so I get it. Working with the public, you do get your fair share of a-holes just like at any job. My outcomes have always been favorable whenever I needed help, from health emergencies to minor traffic accidents to non-emergent issues. I even got out of jury duty once due to my relationship with the department, LOL! Years ago, riding in a friend's truck from Lahaina to Kahului, we almost got into a head-on collision as some idiot was overtaking cars. After we swerved off the shoulder, luckily an officer was right behind us and pulled the yo-yo over. Most recently, I had someone clip my vehicle and drive off. I gave chase, an officer saw the other driver speeding, he gave chase but lost them, I provided the license plate number, he got their info, their insurance paid. Yes! NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES: Once, I was driving to Lahaina and traffic was just stopped in the Ukumehame area. It wasn't the usual gridlock but one car that was stopped at the head of the line backing up traffic. I had no idea what was going on so I blew my horn as we were just sitting there. In any other city it would be accepted but not to this one dick-of-an-officer who came up to my car and gave me crap about it. Back around 1996, even after providing the license plate number to the attending officer of a hit-and-run driver, I got no info back on the other driver and got stuck with the repair bill. MPD already has a bad reputation with recent news. Officer Madariaga who is a rookie really needs to learn more about the community. I don't think I had a speeding ticket in over 20 years until today. The school parking lot is empty, gates closed, and he is hiding there to ticket vehicles in a school zone, auwe! Going 35 in a 20 (school zone, normally 30 on Papa Ave. So sad. $148 online payment. Let's go MPD, you can do better.

A little bit of Hawaiian history hidden in Kihei…read more Lovely spot to visit for anyone, not just the observant. "The Church by the Sea" is an open air church built in 1853, and was the first in all of Hawaii to have a Hawaiian ordained minister. Strangely this seems to be a quiet feature; I found the commemorating plaque hidden behind some half-alive potted plants. There's a small cemetery, and a simple but charming outdoor walk for the 14 Stations of the Cross. It's quiet, green and contemplative. Might be a nice place to attend a morning service, in the splendour of Creation. Certainly better than any crazy megachurch that looks more like a gaudy car dealership than a place of worship.

You know I am the first to recognize great efforts and give kudos to those who go all out and go…read moreabove the call of the duty and I think every fire fighter deserves that. Whether at home where I live I always "fill the boot" when our local first responders are collecting. When we left our home last week the Sandy Fire was burning very close to our place we almost didn't come to the beautiful Island of Maui because we were very nervous. We experienced the Mountain Fire last year and were nearly evacuated. We witnessed the Palisades and Alta Dena Fires and the massive devastation. When we arrived and were leaving OGG airport I saw the sign at the fire station about the T Shirts for sale. Every year I donate to "Fill the Boot" for our local fire fighters so why not donate here. We got to meet the crew and shake hands, got to meet the chief and shake hands and he actually hugged my wife. Such a special moment and such good hearted people it really touched me to know how good hearted the people are here on Maui and welcoming strangers into their house. We bought several T Shirts and if I wasn't so moved I would have grabbed a photo of the crew but again I was so moved at their kindness and generosity. So if you are visiting Maui please stop in and give gratitude to these hard working folks, while everyone is running out they are running in. We are blessed to have them amongst us. Vene and his wife gave us a brief history lesson and prayer and then got us into the outrigger. We were chanting and rowing away but unfortuantely it was a windy day and Vene turned us around. We spent the rest of the time wading through the large fish pen helping him repair the wall. There were 5 or 6 large sea turtles just hanging out in the sun. That was incredible to see. Vene is a great singer.
