The two most frequented departments are the Labor & Industrial Relations and Tax Office. PARKING: The metered parking lot is small and rates are only 25-cents for 30 minutes which is dirt cheap! There is a very limited amount of free but timed street parking. ACCESS: The parking lot provides access to the first level. The main entry off High St brings you direct to the second level. There is an elevator but because the building looks so old, I used the stairs just for sanity's sake and a little exercise. The old station was that sunken, 2-level building right next to the county building and currently houses the county permits office. They moved from those cramped quarters to their current spot on Mahalani Street in the mid 80's. Back then, you could literally walk through the entire building as no doors were key-controlled. Not anymore. Today, the public has access only to the receiving desk and traffic sections. POSITIVE EXPERIENCES: Calling 911 has been quick and efficient. Like other reviewers have stated, I too have gotten a condescending operator on the line, but it is a high-stress job with measly pay, so I get it. Working with the public, you do get your fair share of a-holes just like at any job. My outcomes have always been favorable whenever I needed help, from health emergencies to minor traffic accidents to non-emergent issues. I even got out of jury duty once due to my relationship with the department, LOL! Years ago, riding in a friend's truck from Lahaina to Kahului, we almost got into a head-on collision as some idiot was overtaking cars. After we swerved off the shoulder, luckily an officer was right behind us and pulled the yo-yo over. Most recently, I had someone clip my vehicle and drive off. I gave chase, an officer saw the other driver speeding, he gave chase but lost them, I provided the license plate number, he got their info, their insurance paid. Yes! NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES: Once, I was driving to Lahaina and traffic was just stopped in the Ukumehame area. It wasn't the usual gridlock but one car that was stopped at the head of the line backing up traffic. I had no idea what was going on so I blew my horn as we were just sitting there. In any other city it would be accepted but not to this one dick-of-an-officer who came up to my car and gave me crap about it. Back around 1996, even after providing the license plate number to the attending officer of a hit-and-run driver, I got no info back on the other driver and got stuck with the repair bill. MPD already has a bad reputation with recent news. Officer Madariaga who is a rookie really needs to learn more about the community. I don't think I had a speeding ticket in over 20 years until today. The school parking lot is empty, gates closed, and he is hiding there to ticket vehicles in a school zone, auwe! Going 35 in a 20 (school zone, normally 30 on Papa Ave. So sad. $148 online payment. Let's go MPD, you can do better.

The building is made with hollow tile which is a natural insulator, resulting in a cool interior despite the hot conditions outside, and ceiling fans aid in the cooling process. The open beam ceilings provide for an airy feeling. The space can be divided into 3 separate rooms or 1 big one which holds about 400-450 people max. There are lots of big windows that allow natural light to pour in. The fixed stage is equipped with a garage door backdrop that leads to the back of the facility and allows for easy set up for bands & entertainment. The only downfall is the tiny parking lot. There's an adjacent parking lot next door for park users but more than likely a sporting event will be happening so parking is normally super tight.

It is an entertaining and informative 3/4 day to pick the jury from the selected attendees, with plenty of breaks for refreshments, toilet breaks and meter feeding. (If you park at Safeway you can catch a free shuttle Bee bus to the court, much easier than trying to find parking - the bus stop is right outside the courthouse). Attendees gas mileage is paid by cheque afterwards as long as you fill in the relevant form. I'm hoping that I am picked at a later date, so I can fill my civic duty and because I find it such a fascinating process.

JURY DUTY: I must be one of the crazy few who actually likes jury duty, LOL. While the government reimburses you peanuts, I still get paid through my job so what do I care? I find the whole process interesting and want to serve my community somehow. During the selection process, it's entertaining to hear others' excuses as to why they should be dismissed. On Maui, I've never had the opportunity to serve and have only appeared twice so far, only to be dismissed or the trial canceled. I did however have the opportunity to be an alternate for federal jury on Oahu which lasted five days. The only bummer was that I missed the deliberations due to being an alternate. SMALL CLAIMS: I've had to use small claims court twice so far due to others' negligence. Both were minor car accidents, one driver that had no auto insurance (judgement in my favor), the other refusing to call their auto insurance back (no court appearance as they cooperated with their insurance company upon being served papers). The process is all self-serve. Head to the Service Center office located in room # 141A (after going through security, turn right and it's the office near the front/center of the building). Here, they have an overwhelming shelf full of forms for whatever services they provide, a pay-for copying machine, but not a single pen. Office staff are available for questions. When your papers are in order, the Clerk's Office (behind security) handles the official filing and payments. Most recently, I've dealt with two ladies there, one nice but a smart ass, the other nice and genuine. For the serving of small claims papers, you can either have someone not involved in the case deliver it to the party or they provide a long list of civil service processors which is the route I went. I had no idea who to call but a familiar "Maui name" caught my eye and I went with that person. Ballpark amounts for delivery are $40 plus mileage, paid directly to the server. WAGE GARNISHMENT: This was unbelievably easy to do too. My first small claims case stopped making payments to me so I was forced to engage war! You'd better believe that I was paid in full after papers were served. Forms are available from the Service Center office. TIP: The parking meters are old-school and take coins only. OVERALL: Power to the people!

Johanna helped us get Part B, plus she managed to get some recent hospital bills taken care of, and she made some great suggestions such as applying for SNAP online. All in 20 minutes and one form! With west Maui being in such a state and having to deal with Red Cross and FEMA bureaucracy which is draining it was a relief for something to be easy for once! And to know that my friend would now have health cover even if he didn't have a home (working on that one with Red Cross!). The Lahaina disaster is HUGE and life is a struggle for a lot of displaced people now. Johanna (I hope I'm spelling your name correctly) was an angel for my 71 year old friend who is mentally and physically exhausted and fragile. 5* all the way for this office and Johanna :)

Both of the women who helped me were icy and judgemental. I felt like I was in a Catholic School and they were the nuns. I half expected both of them on those two occasions to have me put out my hand while they struck me with their rulers. I will shop around for another place before I set foot in the Kahului DMV. PS. I was helped at the first desk and given a number, but I missed my number as I was waiting for the folks selling me the car to fill in their part of the form, so my number was recycled and I was called up within 2 numbers again. My application was handled graciously by a really nice lady who kept me informed of what she was doing and was quick and efficient. I was in and out in 10 minutes registering a vehicle which is unheard of in Lahaina which takes about 2 weeks, 4 visits and a lot of confusion and abuse from the staff!! This will be my go to DMV when required in person. Everyone was helpful, friendly and the place was clean and efficient. I was pleasantly surprised.
