I'm late with this review. I visited Pollard's Chicken and Catering in May for an anniversary lunch with my wife. Let me get the small stuff out of the way before I get to the food. You can order online, by phone, or in person. There are also kiosks you can place your order at in the store; I tried one, and it was a little confusing, and I did not see all the menu items listed. So, I placed my order with a server. This food is almost cooked to order, so you will have to wait. If you are eating in, they will bring your food out. There is nothing special about the decor, but I love all the little reference pictures of chickens and the history of Pollards. The restrooms were clean, which indirectly refers to how the kitchen looks. Now, the food; when I tell you it was served hot, I mean it was hot. The sweet biscuits were fresh, the green beans were favorable, and the cole slaw was crisp. Now, the chicken--is exceptional and second to none. This chicken was served fresh out of the oil. It was crisp, favorable, and juicy. When I bit into it, you could see the steam, so be careful not to burn yourself. The service was amazing; it was like being in your mother's kitchen. Horrible!! Placed a pick-up order for Chicken & BBQ Dinner, 4pc Tender Dinner, Small Gizzards, and slice of Coconut Cake - disappointed in everything. I live less than a mile from the Tidewater Drive location and yet everything was barely warm. I reheated all of the fried items in my air fryer to keep them crispy, but within minutes the stench of old grease and smoke filled the air. My partner and I could only ate a few bites before throwing it all away. The Coconut cake good, but for nearly $4.50 it should be larger than a 1 inch slice. We placed an online order at 5:13pm - showed up a half hour later to get it. Our order was not even started - was told the cook forgot to put the thighs in the fryer. It would be at least 20 more minutes!! A half hour later it was still not ready. Told it would be another 10 minutes! Finally was done at 6:35. Took it home and everything but the thighs were ice cold. AND....there was no Cole slaw in the dinner. Fire everyone in that place!!! I picked up dinner tonight, Friday April 19, 2024, and was a bit surprised. I placed my order on the phone with the Tidewater Drive location. First, the chicken was good. The sides, cole slaw and potato salad, were good but small. The price was very high. Now the items that really disappointed me; the honey "sauce". The ingredients listed high fructose corn syrup first. It also listed other corn syrup, sugar, honey and natural flavor. That is ridiculous! read more

OK... I want to love this place because I have heard from so many people that it is THE place to get chicken. I just can't bring myself to love it. The last time I got take out, the chicken itself wasn't even crispy and I think that the breading is a bit bland. Their sides are entirely too greasy for my taste... I do understand that in the "south" this is how fried chicken sides are done, it's just not for me. Also, their "puffs" a.k.a. hush puppies are not really anything to get that excited about. I still went with three stars because the service was awesome, if a little bit slow. I understand that with more homemade foods, the wait is higher, so I tried to give them credit for that. The folks here were so nice, great at explaining the menu and how the ordering works. I probably won't be back because there are so many other options as far as chicken goes in the area. I'm sure that I will come across Pollard's again at a function or friends house, so hopefully I will get to try again then and maybe I will have a better experience. read more

My main craving was for clam strips. I couldn't believe it when we opened all THREE containers and there appeared to be the "bottom of the fryer" of clam strips. Not only were they over cooked, but there wasn't even a handful in each container. Very disappointed. Our gizzards were on point and plentiful. But that was the only positive in our order. They bill themselves as the best chicken around. I have to agree with them in most part. The chicken is hot there's all kinds of super good sides to have with the chicken. The chicken could be a little bit better if seasoned, in my opinion. This is not a place for fast food unless you phone in your order. Everything is cooked as you wait. The collard greens and the fried okra are exceptional sides. Getting away for under $10 each, we grabbed our two dinner specials and headed down to Ocean View Beach to sit on a bench and watch the bathers and sun worshippers as we "dined." read more

One thing I learned from dating my boyfriend, is that no Filipino party is complete without lumpia and fried chicken. Usually somebody's auntie brings lumpia that she spent three days rolling in her kitchen while everybody else brings an assortment of KFC and Popeyes. With Pollards, you can pump up the Filipino jam with one easy step! Give them a call and fifteen minutes later, SHA-ZAM! Lumpia, fried chicken, okra, and gizzards in one trip. Pollards makes fried chicken like my church WISHES it made fried chicken.... juicy insides, crispy outsides, and perfectly seasoned. Servers are very friendly and even packed me some extra gizzards to snack on during the car ride home (I passed but I appreciated the effort!). Not impressed at all. This is one of the newer franchise Pollard's. It's located in a building that used to be a bank in the Woods Corner Shopping Center on the Centerville Turnpike. Next door is a Sonic. The newly renovated building has been completely redone inside with a vary large dinning room that can seat a group of just about any size. There is also a banquet room just after the main dining room on the right. The food was excellent. I had a 4 piece chicken tender dinner with fries and a regular sized drink. Ran just over $9.00. What killed this visit for me was the experience. It stunk. Plain and simple. They got my order wrong. I ordered dine and and received my food in a carry out box. There was no sense of urgency and everyone just seemed to be meandering around back behind the counter and in the kitchen. Adults and teens alike just hanging out. The leadership definitely needs to be looked at here if they intend to have repeat customers. read more

Alleluia...alleluia...praising fried chicken. Can't even think right now because I am in a food coma. My tummy is full and my heart is satisfied. Whoaa, I am for sure going to spend more time at the gym to burn some calories...lol^_* Seriously, I must agree that Pollard is the best fried chicken in Hampton roads. The chicken itself is cooked to perfection - golden and brown. The meat is tender and juicy, just addictive and insanely delicious. With my lunch combo, I ordered the hush puppies and sweet potato on the side. The hush puppies is greatly portioned and probably one of the best I ever tasted. It was crispy on the outside and soft inside. while the sweet potato is seasoned well with sugar and cinnamon. Overall, thought it was wonderful place. My only criticism is the distinct smell of fried is quite alarming. It can be forgiven once you try the FRIED CHICKEN. Apart from that, I am well satisfied. I was driving down Kempsville and decided to go to Pollards since I hadn't been in many years. I ordered the 12 piece chicken only for like 19 bucks since I was headed to my family's house, and you have to bring something for the Sunday meal. I waited about 15 - 20 minutes for the order, but the chicken seemed hot and fresh so that was cool. I have to be honest, the general consensus from the group was not good. In my opinion the chicken definitely doesn't taste the way I remembered it tasting. The seasoning just wasn't there, and everyone agreed it was pretty bland. The expectations were pretty high especially for that price, but it just didn't hold up. It wasn't really bad, but it wasnt good either. I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

There is a reason they are continually voted the #1 chicken in Hampton Roads. They are a local chain but each restaurant feels like a stand alone store. This particular store has a banquet room and big booths. The quality of the food overcomes the slight smell of fryer oil when I first walked in. I came in for a late lunch and was torn between the Tuesday special of chicken liver and gizzards dinner or a three piece plate. I love gizzards but I settled on the three piece with hush puppies and sweet potato fries. The chicken was crispy and fresh, the hush puppies was fresh from the fryer and just right, crispy on the outside and hot on the inside. The sweet potato fries were the best I've had in a long time. The fries were not soggy and were cooked perfectly. If you're in the Hampton Roads area and want chicken, head to a Pollards, you won't be disappointed! read more

I've actually passed this place everyday on my way home for 3 yrs and never thought to go inside. Man I didn't know what I was missing. First I'll say that the service there is actually amazing being that it's a fast food chain. Unlike the McDonald's next door these people are extremely friendly and patient (being that I had to look over the menu for a little and figure out what I wanted). Now the food...man that chicken is as fresh as can be. The fries are even better. And the puffs... well I could go there exclusively just for them. Give it a go you won't be disappointed read more

The food tasted like Pollard's used Stouffer's Mac and Chessmen, greens from a can and they served us wet corn muffins. In the past they cooked their vegetables themselves and added seasonings to turn food into. a great Southern Meal. You can go to Golden Corral and get better tasting food. So disappointed! I've had Pollard's cater three events for me in the past six months. I was very satisfied with the quality of the food at such a reasonable price. The last two times I selected the 'Open House' catering package with was a good combination of both hot and cold items. The fruit display was beautiful. The price per person for this package was just $12.49 Their delivery option has been very reliable - even arriving a few minutes before their scheduled time. I would definitely recommend Pollard's for anyone looking to host a party with a nice spread at a very reasonable price. read more

Liver or Gizzard Dinner, anyone? Talk about country cookin'. What else would you expect from a restaurant with a Crisco logo on its menu? Pollard's has been in the area for many, many years. I remember going as a kid at the Ballentine location and even then, the place was old! My parents and grandparents used to eat there. I grew up eating their chicken and puffs. Ah, the innocence of childhood! Now, I'm a health-conscious vegetarian. If I hear the event I'm attending is being catered by Pollard's, I cringe. Kinda sad, really. I mean, what's so bad about enjoying an occasional greasy meal, really? Even though I'm vegetarian, their vast menu of side items, including mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, macaroni salad, corn on the cob and other vegetables would sure offer enough variety. With the new shop at Wood's Corner, I couldn't resist a chance at reminiscing. I popped in with my mom and we ordered some puffs. Puffs are small Pillsbury-like biscuits that are---you guessed it!---fried. You then smother the tops in honey, a great move! Yup, still tasty! The new location is very clean and nice. The staff is friendly. And if you haven't developed into a health food snob like me, you will probably love it. read more

It's odd. I never order the chicken. Why? Because their other offerings are so tasty. The service...exceptional! The clerks are always attentive, polite and knowledgeable about the menu items. Heck, they ask your permission to answer an incoming call if they're taking your order. The dining area is clean and the drinks area is always fully stocked. My only "complaint" there really needs to be a veggie meal deal. I like meat, but prefer vegetables. Four out of Five stars (I very rarely, if ever give Five stars). read more

My parents tried ordering dinner from this Pollard's location this evening around 8PM. My dad was on hold for several minutes, only to be told that they were closing down at 8:30PM. Hmm... I could've sworn they close at 9?! And it's not like my parents were ordering 100 pieces of chicken... They only wanted an 8-piece chicken and an order of chicken livers. I'm giving this location 2 stars just for the food I've had in the past. Their customer service has gone waaaaaay downhill. read more

We always get nice service here. Food comes out the way we ordered, hot and fresh. It's decent barbeque with some other offerings. We do like their corn on the cob because it comes with no butter. They also have a dessert counter with some very tasty cakes and stuff. Not exactly the swankiest place in the world, but if you're craving a BBQ fix this will do it. read more

Pollards is my favorite chicken place to go to. This particular store, however is run by children. In which case it makes sense to have waited 45 mins for a 4 piece and still not get it. Nobody checked up on me, nobody said it was going to take a while, they just didn't put in the order. I'm never going back to this pollards again. I'm highly disappointed. read more

Always fresh! Always tasty ! On several occasions, I've had the opportunity to enjoy a treat from this Pollards location. Mostly because of it's easy to reach location can get a treat before I head south along Centerville Tnpk. towards home. The problem is that I eat everything before I get out of the parking Lot! The food is always breaded and seasoned correctly and every time cooked to perfection. I cannot fry chicken this good at home. Just can't. Try and find that at a burger place at around 4:00 PM! Trust me, its that good. I have also had catering for 50 people provided by this location, and, as expected it was just what I anticipated it to be. Hot and Fresh ! I chose the baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw, Minced BBQ, hush puppies, and Chicken. Love the chicken - hate the customer service, or should I say lack of it. Stopped by for takeout for a late dinner - relatively simple order, two 2 piece dinners and a piece of fish. Waited 30 minutes for my order! I complained to the Manager about the excessive wait and all I heard was excuses. It wasn't until I said I was contacting the owner via the email posted on the wall for feedback that she tried to remedy the situation- I left disgusted. Emailed the owner three days ago and still no response - I guess poor customer service is a systemic issue. read more

I have eaten at this particular Pollard's restaurant on several occasions and have left satisfied with my visit every time. I have only had one instance where the food I received was not quite as I ordered, but the staff was very polite when I spoke to them about it and the manager made sure that I left happy. The quality of the service and food I have received has always been fantastic. I live in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake where there is a Pollard's restaurant near by, but I always seem to travel to this location because of how great my past experiences have been.
