I particularly love it at Christmas time when there is a Christmas panto, They are highly recommended and attended by many, including schools. We have had many a great night out at the Christmas pantos. During the intervals there is a tuck-shop in the corridor selling soft drinks, crisps and sweets etc and upstairs there is a bar if you fancy something stronger.

The Kelburn Castle has been a home to the Boyle family since it's construction in the 13th Century…read more It is the oldest castle in Scotland that has been continuously inhabited. Allowing the castle to be painted came about when the Boyle family were told that they would have to remove the tower because of damage to the stonework. Since it was going to be removed the family decided to ask four Brazilian street artists to paint the castle. Their graffiti art created so much excitement that the family appealed to the Historic Scotland to allow it to stay. They are a government agency responsible for preserving the country's historic monuments. The agency granted temporary permission and attached an end date. The end date has passed and the family is working towards extending it again. While I visited the castle it was under major renovations so perhaps the construction will stabilize the castle and allow it to continue to be known to tourists as the Graffiti Castle. It cost £9.00 to spend the day hiking on the property. It was an absolutely amazing day and I highly recommend visiting this property. There is a visitor office with hiking maps, bathroom facilities and an area to purchase food. Included in our entrance fee was a tour of the spooky forest. They had a children's section by day and adult section at night. I passed on the Halloween fun because of time restraints.

It is closely tied with Motherwells apparent interest in geneology, with a great geneology section in the nearby Library. Motherwell and Wishaw has a rich history rooted in steelworks with the knock on effect of unemployment when the Ravenscraig steelworks in Motherwell closed still very apparent. In conjunction with this, a longstanding hatred towards Thatcher is also still vibrant. I once saw a man sporting an 'I STILL HATE MAGGIE THATCHER' t-shirt. I wonder where he bought it. There are some decent family research facilities in here and let's not forget, the viewing tower, where you can watch people scratching themselves at the bus stop. It's like a cheap version of the Bat Signal, and quite cool on a dark night.. (Worst Yelp joke of 2010 nominee?). A decent afternoon can be had in here, if what the place has to offer is of interest to you and The Bentley Hotel next door is a good shout for a bite to eat before or after.

The actual exhibitions need a lick of paint and a wee dust though, as they have not changed since i was a kid. The wee 'cinema' inside has a dummy lady that's supposed to give you a ticket, and she never has. Ever. It is well worth it as it really is a little time capsule and is so well loved and looked after by the stewards that their enthusiasm is infectuous. There is a real loom and spinning wheel which the stewards work for you (in period costume)and you are given the opportunity to try it out too. Nothing has changed in the cottage since the 1800s - furniture is all authentic. It really is remarkably well preserved. It is also very child friendly. Kids are given treasure trove sheets to go through as they walk around. It has a lovely garden at the back to sit in on a summer's day. A great day out for all the family.

The space is outdoors so if you're going for an event dress for Scottish weather. That said it was a clear dry, if windy, night when I attended. Definitely worth checking out.
