This was my favorite winery in the area. It just has a very calm, comforting feel. The staff were all smiles and greeted us right away. They did a good job explaining the wines and didn't seem "stuffy" Also their wines are derived from apples! Sweet! I would give them 5 stars if they served food (bruschetta anyone?) or some fun non-alcoholic drinks for the DD (NA apple cider maybe?)

Playful George. Super fun wine tasting.

Pomona Winery is a small vineyard and winery located on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in a wooded section of the Shawnee National Forest (10 miles south of Murphysboro). They have a rural tasting room with a back deck that overlooks the forest. The grape-less wines they offer are unique and tasty. Most are made from apples, berries and other locally sourced fruits. The cost is $3 for a tasting of all 10 wines. George and Becky are informative, entertaining and fun. This winery is small, but unique and is definitely a worthwhile stop on the wine trail!

You have to come here if you're in the area for a tasting. Truly unique wines. We bought a lot to take home.

There was lots of inside seating, but it was extremely loud (and crowded) when we visited. The front room is decorated like a German beer hall. We sat in a large room off to the side that looks like it would be used for wedding receptions or large parties. There is also a patio with seating but it was a cold day so we stayed indoors. The patio looks like it could use a refresh but the view is very nice.

We were invited into this large bar space with ample seating and easy access to another attached large space that had even more seating which led to even another large seating space outside with a view of the valley. Von Jakob offers, wine, beer, and limited bourbon which we were told was really a one time offering, and once the bourbon is gone, that's it. We were only there for a tasting and did pick up a few bottles. I never felt rushed and the host was knowledgeable and offered information on all that was available as the tasting list was extensive. There was no live music while we were there but I would not hesitate to come back for that. A solid experience.

Owl Creek Vineyard has 10 hard ciders to choose from and it has some sangria too which is a bonus. Staff here was not really too friendly and their food was pretty expensive which is probably the only reason why I'm subtracting a star. A lot of other people like to dine outside and I can see why because then scenery out there is pretty beautiful especially by the little river where you can see the train go by. Parking isn't too bad either so going up that hill is a little bit treacherous upon entering. The ciders were pretty good though nothing stood out to me as the best flavor ever but they were good nonetheless. We enjoyed seeing the Cat come by . Restrooms were pretty clean too. Overall, I really enjoyed coming here and if I ever come back over here I would come back again to The Owl Creek Vineyard.

There is also food for purchase (and they allow you to bring your own picnic food as well). The space is large and relaxed with seating indoors and outside (several levels behind their building). We enjoyed our tasting flights on the top covered, shaded patio. You are able to mix wine and cider in a flight. They have lots of different cider flavors and they are all gluten-free. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable. You may want to bring your growler to take cider home - they were sold out of cans on our visit.
