Doctor's House Bed and Breakfast - Great place to relax on a wark summer night

What a lovely place to stay!…read more My family of five (all adults) stayed at their Crow's Nest rooms on a summer weekend. Our hosts Miriam and John were lovely and gracious, and the space was perfect for our needs. I had a hard time looking up places to stay in the area as I was in Michigan and it just seemed there was very little useful or well-organized information about housing or rentals online. I'm so glad I found this place! They were always prompt with answering emails and accommodating concerns and turned out to be an ideal place to stay. The home is very nice and well maintained. Very large! There must be 7 rooms I think, although not all for guests. It apparently used to be a county doctor's home in the past. There is a large common area on the main floor with a fireplace, but we didn't use it as our rooms had a great living area enclosed. The Crow's Nest room area at the top of the BnB is great for families or small groups as it has two adjoining rooms and a large living area and a tv and small balcony and well-equipped kitchen, and is great to just "hang out" and play games, catch up etc. The grounds here are beautiful! We played frisbee in the yard, lay in the hammock, chatted on the lovely deck. The lawn is very well maintained! There is a firepit, veggie patch. I haven't even had the breakfast yet (that's tomorrow morning) but the hosts were very accommodating with our requests for a diabetic meal for my mom. There is a restaurant down the street (Sulky Sam's) which came recommended from the hosts, which we enjoyed as well :) Nearby there are all the great things the Bruce trail and recreation area have to offer. Port Elgin is great for relaxed cookouts with the family, Sauble beach is right there, and then a scenic drive from Wiarton to Tobermory is not to be missed (Flower Pot Island, Chantry Island, etc). STAY HERE! We've stayed at BnB's in Mackinaw, Michigan and in Stratford, Ontario among other places - this is our favorite so far!

I do not drive but that was not a problem. Miriam put me in contact with Sandra Howe from sole and spirit. Miriam was prompt in answering emails and worked with Sandra and I to make this an unforgettable experience for me. The home has a Victorian look and is well maintained. My room was on the main floor at the front. Its room was large with a comfortable bed, an ensuite and furnishing to match the time era. The grounds are well kept with gardens,a fire pit and a place to just relax. I enjoyed the hammock, the covered glider and chairs on the spacious deck out back. Miriam's breakfast was excellent what a cook. I'd recommend the restaurant down the street (Sulky Sam's) or the BBQ chicken dinner at the Legion. (a short walk away) A not to be missed spot is nearby Paisley. Sandra who provided my transportation to and from the bus station, shared the history of the area on the drive. I did a bike tour that was personalized to my needs and seen the Mills. The next day Miriam showed me the route to bike to Arron Lake, a scenic ride and relaxing spot. An excellent trip, all very affordable,no car or bicycle needed. Back to city life now.

Hosts Kim and Kevin are so welcoming and knowledgeable about all the doings in Stratford. The house is impeccably decorated, with tons of books to read and spaces to sit outside and enjoy the gardens. Refrigerators for personal use. Rooms and beds are comfortable and many have private decks. Tea and cookies always available. The most wonderful thing is that a big thermos of coffee is brought up into hallway in early morning for self serve. How great is that? No getting dressed! Outstanding ample breakfast each day featuring top notch very fresh and innovative breakfast items. A station with granola, fresh breads, croissants, biscuits and homemade jams starts one off. Then a hot item of astonishing quality. Dietary restrictions accommodated. Cannot wait to return next year!

Kevin got back to me immediately and replied to my inquiry and we quickly and efficiently arranged everything. My friend and I arrived a bit earlier than we'd initially indicated, but both Kevin and Kim were welcoming and helpful. We were shown to a reasonable sized room on the second floor and all necessary amenities were explained to us. The decor of the place wasn't really my cup of tea, but the room was clean and cozy, so I can put aside my own personal aesthetic. The private bathroom was a decent size and well laid out. The bed was a wee bit smaller than I'd imagined, but it was very comfortable. My favourite part of my stay though hands down had to be my breakfast! Because Kevin and Kim knew we had an early start, they got breakfast going extra early for us. We started with freshly baked croissants, lemon poppy seed cake, and assorted fresh berries. DEELISH! Then we had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce with heirloom tomato on a wonderfully salty rosti. SO SO GOOD!!! The eggs were cooked to perfection and the splash of pesto on the tomato added a perfect kick. I was in heaven. I love coming to Stratford to see the theatre. Next year, I am totally coming back here, but I am going to make sure that I have dinner at the Old Rectory too!

Tom and Connie were great hosts and more than willing to have a conversation and fill us in about the area. Also nice enough to let you be on your own. Cottage appears to be a converted garage but once you walk inside you will be pleasantly surprised. Main part of cabin has a bathroom with shower and toilet, a very nice raised kitchen with all the appliances you might be used to and a small dining area that sits right next to the bed in this room. Gas fireplace, sofa, book shelf and small closet are here also. This part of the cottage is a little too crowded especially if there are more than two of you. Off of the dining area is a very large addition that has two beds, a couple of chairs and a flat screen TV with satellite. This room is done nicely in white pine panel but could use some comfy chairs. There is also a washer and dryer in this room hidden in a closet. All of this sits on 30 or 40 acres of woods and manicured lawn. Tom told us that there was a creek and a tree house about a quarter mile back in the woods but that some one was renting the tree house back there so we did not go back. We did see a deer right outside our back room on Wednesday morning. You have the option of getting breakfast here and Tom and Connie delivered it to our room at 9 am. Nice touch. For the $95 we paid this was a deal. Would definitely consider coming back.

We were definitely pleasantly surprised when we walked in to the "cottage house" a nice kitchen, large living area and a gas fireplace that was greatly appreciated since the second week of June the temp had dropped to 52. Tom made an amazing breakfast in the morning and him and Connie delivered right to our cottage. We will definitely be staying there again when we need to escape.
