We always come in and out of Moynihan Train Hall when visiting NYC. It's celebrating its 10 year anniversary as well. This is such a welcomed sight from coming into the older, darker Penn Station across the way. This new train station also has a food hall with a variety of food vendors, stores (including a Walgreens/Duane Reade), and a bar as well. There is a dedicated Amtrak lounge for first class ticket guests, and one for regular ticketed guests. All in all, this is my go to train depot when coming in and out of NYC by train. read more

I love the Moynihan Train Hall for the most part. I've probably taken 50+ rides starting/ending at Moynihan the past three years. I feel pretty good on commenting about the experience here. Overall though... Moynihan is big, it's spacious, it's bright. Outside, the architecture cannot be understated. Inside, it's beautiful. The modern upgrades it's gotten do not go unnoticed. Bathrooms are decent sized and always clean. Moynihan connects to Penn Station which is nice. The Food Hall is on the west side of the building, not too bad. Signs throughout the Train Hall help with directions for new travelers. Announcement for your rides can be overheard but it's best if you stay near the gates. There are ways to circumvent the long gate lines to get your preferred seat on the train, but I won't give away my secrets hehe. Note: if you have an early train (before 5am) you have to enter Moynihan through Penn Station which can definitely confuse new riders. My biggest gripe is their lack of seating. This isn't a new thing, it's been known. Passengers and visitors rely on the floor for rest. There is a boarding seating area for paying passengers but it gets full quickly, and it's tucked away which disallows users to use the benefits of the new Train Hall. Passengers can find seating in the Food Hall as well, but it's not the same thing as a few benches near the gate entrances. read more

This is one of the main train transit hubs in Manhattan, part deux of two sections of Penn Station, new-ish-ly renovated as of 2020-21. A lot on the history of Penn Station is covered in my separate review of the station, so I'll just add some logistical notes here: - Moynihan Hall is where Amtrak trains arrive and depart, LIRR and NJ transit trains still depart from the depths of the un-renovated hel% oh I mean half under Madison Square Garden. - there's a walkway that connects Moynihan with the MSG basement thru underground tunnel beneath 8th Avenue. You have to look for the signs that direct you to the right escalators downstairs, otherwise some signs will point you outside to walk across the street, which is a perfectly available way to connect, though less convenient in inclement weather. - food options are fancier in Moynihan since it's newer though some may feel pricier too. Personally I'm think most food options in the station (both sides) are over-priced, though Moynihan probably has the better tasting choices, and newer, more pleasant looking stores and stands. - for subway transfers, Moynihan is close to the A/C/E blue lines that run along 8th Ave and MSG section is between A/C/E and 1/2/3 red lines that run along 7th Ave. The MSG exit is closer to B/D/F/M orange and N/Q/R yellow lines at Herald Square too. - While Moynihan is shinier and newer, the older section does win out in that it's slightly more centrally located for those arriving or departing the city. I travel to New York for business a lot. I spent a lot of time in this train hall I think it is unfortunate that whomever designed this location did not really care about the people who are traveling. There's a small and congested seating area if you do want to see, but it is out of the way and it bothers me that there's no care for the general public. Also, they limited the trash cans in the area so when you have something to throw away, you have to search for something. The eateries in the businesses in the hall are nice, but depending upon what time of day it is, the line may be very long. read more

Moynihan Train Hall opened in January 2021 and is the newest train station in NYC. It was constructed on the lower level of the Main Post Office in Manhattan, just across from Madison Square Garden and the New York Penn Station. (Conveniently, the tracks and the platforms run under both buildings.) It is much more than just a station. There is a ton of stuff to do and see here. The Train Hall has many places to eat and shop. As you walk around, you will notice many art installations. They have many eateries, a post office, an Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge, restrooms, and Customer and Ticketing Services. Exiting the Amtrak train at Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, I found myself in a large space, seemingly between Penn Station and Moynihan Hall, and no idea where to go to more conveniently catch the F train. I stopped a passersby, and he proved very helpful, directing me to head right, take the right and head towards the escalators at the end. This took me out by W 33rd Street. Coming back later, I found the Moynihan Train Hall entrance helpfully labeled "to trains" on the corner of W 33rd Street and 8th Avenue. I found the bright glass ceiling large train hall with no trouble. The escalors to the trains were dotted about but no track had been assigned yet. Since I had a few minutes, I went searching for Magnolia Bakery. It wasn't in the Food Hall. Turns out it is its own little shop (not a stall), located just kiddy corner to the Amtrak counter! When they finally assigned a track to my train, about 6 min before our scheduled departure, a massive line quickly formed towards the assigned track's escalor. We didn't have long to get on board and off on our travels. Definitely the more stressful station of the two from this trip! read more

This is a beautiful, modern and well organized transportation hub right in the middle of the city. It was almost like arriving to one of those modern airport buildings in large cities. There was a nice food court, lots of benches to sit, large Amtrak customer service center area, plentiful seating for train customers and much more. All the exits are well marked and the train information can be found in many screens all over the building. The hall is located in the city's former main post office building, the James A. Farley Building, and it occupies an entire city block between Eighth Avenue, Ninth Avenue, 31st Street, and 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. The annex provides new access to most of Penn Station's platforms for Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road passengers, serving 17 of the station's 21 tracks. Absolutely a great re-envisioning of the James A. Farley Post Office Building. My only comment is that there could be another elevator or escalator leading from the hall upstairs closer to the remaining Post Office. (The only ones I see are almost a block away towards the 9th Avenue street exits.) Gorgeous overhaul of the old Penn Station. Bright, spacious, clean and inviting, Moynihan Train Hall is part of the ongoing Penn District renovations. I've seen it when they basically broke ground with the start of construction and it has evolved into something pretty special. It was once a gloomy tunnel of LIRR and NJ transit tracks accompanied by terrible eateries such as Au Bon Pain (remember them?), awful pizza and Subway. Though at the end of the passageway back then, was a restaurant appropriately named Tracks. I even ate there once. The redesign of Penn Station now includes upscale eateries and the ability to navigate in a modern space. Gone are some of the scary individuals that made Penn Station their home. Perhaps they've relocated. Overall, this is a refreshing start to making things better in NYC. I think it's an appealing welcome wagon for those arriving from out of town. read more

It's been quite a while since I last visited NY by train; what a difference! The Moynihan Train Hall is so bright and beautiful. There are dedicated waiting spaces for Amtrak passengers and a large amount of food options for you to choose from while waiting to board. In typical big city stations, the queue to board is overwhelming but moves quickly. If you have luggage with you then definitely opt to use the Red Cap service, they will get you to the train and load your bags for you...don't forget to tip them! I didn't realize this was the old post office until I was walking back to station and looked up opposite MSG and saw the postal motto, cool bit of history. Be sure to check it out! read more

Great experience here inside the second floor Metropolitan Lounge. Staff are very helpful while dealing with just so many people too. Just listening to half the people ask questions that seemed too simple to work out. Enjoyed the food before departure as well as the bag storage. While Amtrak carriages still need major updates, the train hall is good. read more

Man this place is such an upgrade from Penn Station. I arrived via Amtrak from Albany and was so happy to appear in this lobby. Penn has become so outdated and dingy. There is so much gorgeous technology here in video boards. There are many little shops, restaurants, and a food court. It seems to be kept very clean as I saw multiple instances of this in my time in and out here. There is a good amount of police presence for safety. The one downside is the only seating is in the pay lounges, or the food court. I understand the theory behind this to keep homeless out, but it is not helpful for actual travelers. Adding too that the bathrooms were also very clean. read more

We regularly travel between Manhattan and Philadelphia. While last minute Amtrak fares are pricy -- sometimes rivalling a plane ticket! -- this is the most expedient way for us to go. Getting off the Q train we generally enter Penn Station on Seventh Avenue and follow the series of signs through the underground passage to Moynihan. This is preferrable to bearing the elements and walking outside when it's hot, rainy or cold. The station is light, bright and well maintained. Staff is generally helpful. There are plenty of places to grab a quick bite. Unlike the former Amtrak station, you must show your ticket for entree to the waiting area. No matter how quick we are when our track is announced, a long line has inevitably formed by the time we queue up. Regardless, we always get on, we always get seats. No complaints. read more

Mohan is a beautiful landmark in the heart of Midtown near the Pan District and next to Hudson yards. It's the transportation, Nexus for Amtrak and the connector to Penn Station, basically the nerve center of transit on the eastern seaboard and connector to the United States! Inside it is crisp and bright modern and actually kind of a fun place to hang out and wait for your train. Food selections are great. It's very safe and even if you don't have to travel, it's a comfortable public space you can dip into if the weather turns while you're walking somewhere! read more

I am clearly a fan of the Moynihan Train Hall. My wife and I were on our way to Pier 88 for Norwegian cruise and arrived in the city early enough to stop here for breakfast. This place is beautiful and I was blown away by the amount of restaurants here. Honestly, there was some good looking food here. What's nice here is that the place is big, bright and there is plenty of seating. I found this cute shop that specialized in danish, rolls and other breakfast items. I purchased an 'everything croissant' for myself and a 'chocolate croissant' for my wife. I think this was the best breakfast bread I have ever had. Yes, it was that good! This station is big and the layout is great for directions and trains. A lot of thought process and time to complete went into this place, and it shows. This place is the perfect addition to the newly redesigned Penn Station. I also like the way they put the ride share pickup in one spot. No longer do you have to figure out where you are when you call Uber or Lyft. If you come here, give yourself a little extra time to see this magnificent place is New York. How often is customer service, these days, unexpectedly good? How about on the 800-number for a government agency? How about during a federal shutdown? I was dead-bang certain that my experience would be abysmal when I had to call... Amtrak. In August we bought choo-choo tickets for a Baltimore-to-NYC day trip later this year. This morning I wanted to check that we had everything we needed for this mini-odyssey. I had a one-liner on a credit card bill. I had no email, pdf, Google Wallet save, or pdf from Amtrak, anywhere. So I called, bounced through the AI questions with my touch-tone phone and then waited for.... Only ten minutes. Then an extremely friendly and helpful agent came on, and in less than five minutes she had found our tickets in their system and emailed them to me, and waited on line until I had them and understood all of the information on them. read more

This train station is delightfully designed: clean lines, brightly lit and not a peep of trash to be found anywhere. I must say it was even difficult to find a trashcan in which to deposit trash I had. Once emerging from the train. I found coffee shops, flower shops, various places to buy food like burgers, tacos, sandwiches, more coffee, bakery treats, and adult beverages. What I found challenging to locate was a woman's bathroom that did not have a line of less than 12 women waiting to use one of the 6 bathroom stalls. I asked for a different restroom and I was directed to one that was closed and found my way back to the area where most of the restaurants were located. On this my third visit, I found again the line to the women's restroom, sneaking out of the area and into the hall outside of the restroom. On the other hand, the men's room had no wait. read more

This is a lovely train hall. I didn't take the train much when I was younger up to the city, but when I did start doing so, I really saw the before and after. Old times had me arriving in the massive and crowded Penn Station... was never the brightest thing to welcome me to the city haha. Now we've got this train hall that's connected to Penn Station, and I gotta say it's lovely! They have little lounges where you can hang out as long as you show your train ticket -- though you'd be shocked how fast they fill up. There are plenty of screens showing which trains are coming and which tracks they're on. It's incredibly hard to miss those, and I appreciate that. And everything seems pretty fresh in the train hall for it to be NYC, sheesh. I can't help but wonder how often they clean that place? I've had nothing but great experiences there. One thing I will say is that the main hall where you have to go down the escalators for the tracks has absolutely no trash cans. I was wolfing down a slice of pizza on a plate and I had to walk all the way to the food court... add one or two of those in the main area and this place is perfect. read more
