This general store is awesome! They have grocery items but also a restaurant inside with a counter and a couple tables to order some great food. We had several pieces of pizza here that were fantastic and a ham and turkey sandwich. They also have grill items and a deli with high quality meats. They also have souvenirs. This is where people go to get their groceries to bring to Monhegan island, Port Clyde general store is right by the port for the ferry to go to the island. read more

Perhaps it was because it was the end-of-the-season, I don't know... but I was shocked at how rude the woman behind the food counter behaved when I ordered a sandwich. Unfortunately, the girl sitting behind the register wasn't much better, nor was the woman in the gift shop who took care of checking in ferry riders. I would go into town for breakfast. Basic breakfast, nothing special. And for the gluten free people? When they say "2 pieces of gluten free toast" for and extra $4.00? What you get is ONE piece cut into half calling it 2 pieces. So $4.00 extra for one piece of toast? Could have nearly bought an entire loaf for that. read more

My favorite thing about the Port Clyde General Store is the fresh bakery items such as muffins, cinnamon rolls, and scones. We grabbed breakfast at the grill before loading on the ferry to Monhegan, but the biscuits weren't great. Would recommend just sticking to the bakery items at the front. read more

What a delightful spot. Stopped in on a whim and the staff was friendly and helpful. Decided to have lunch and we were glad we did. The Haddock Chowder was spectacular, full of fish and potatoes, classically spiced, smooth with the right amount of cream and butter. The pastrami sandwich was tender with plenty of high quality meat, grilled and nice and warm. Even the coffee was good. I totally get that summer is a busy season and it's common to run out of things, but how about don't be a prick. Incompetent counter-folk. Well kids. And the chef or owner or whoever was behind the line was a total jerk when I asked for fries instead of chips -- got the order wrong. Didn't bother to tell me they were out of coleslaw, and the food was expensive and BLAND. Cute building, great location, sadly the people working it ruined the experience-- not like they care I'm sure. Of note: Fish tacos Fried Haddock melt Haddock Reuben Cheeseburger (note - may not be the best burger you have had but the buttery, lightly toasted brioche roll makes for a winner) Grilled and the Fried Chicken Sandwich (note - both on same great buttery brioche roll describes above) Hash browns Red Sky smoothie Selection isn't huge for groceries but the fresh vegetables and produce when in stock is really great (often from local farms like 3 Bugs Farm) as is some of the other gourmet items. Have eaten here many times,and never disappoints. Had a Lobster Roll today and it was as good as any I've had. Wife had a BLT and cup of vegetable soup and both were excellent. There where only two happy looking people there, one was a short girl that I didn't get the name of and the other was a kid named Noah. We asked him why he wears normal clothes and if he knows that might discourage people from wanting to ask but he just said that they where getting too it but maybe they should get on that so he can actually help people without looking weird. all in all the food was meh, the floors where clear, two of the staff were friendly and the shelves were stalked. read more

This is the most messed up place I have been to in the U.S. You must get the key to wash your hands to or use the rest room. You can't get the key unless you buy something but nothing has a price marked on it. We asked the lady prices and she said she could find out when she checked us out at the register. And yet again on my trip to Port Clyde I am disappointed by the port Clyde General Store. The service is extremely slow not knowledgeable and unhelpful. This saddens me greatly because the Port Clyde General Store used to be a wonderful place with happy, friendly, energetic people working, the store was the epicenter of community where many people would gather for coffee in the afternoons and now it is a tourist trap with trinkets, overpriced jams and things nobody needs. I'm not saying that a few tourist items like cute t-shirts or coffee mugs are not appreciated but think of the people who are here and provide groceries and supplies that are useful, we don't need 10 different kinds of whoopie pies we need the basics. I will continue to be hopeful that things will improve but the notorious reputation as being a useless store seems to continue on. read more

I ate here for breakfast and had an omelet with home fries and a grilled English muffin as sides. The omelet was really the only good thing as the English muffin was so lightly grilled it may as well have been toasted and the home fries didn't have much flavor with some bites and too much with others and appeared to be frozen and then deep fried with seasoning inconsistently applied after. I was also very confused as to wether or not I should have been tipping as I was told that coffee was "self service" when I asked for one even though I was sitting at the counter and had someone take my order at my seat as well as delivered my meal to me. The person who took my order seemed to be friendly and earnest to help me even though it was painfully obvious that English was not their first language. It seemed that the only native English speakers were either behind working the grille or at the front register. While the store does have a good selection to choose from for some items, a lot of items in the store were overpriced. I think I will avoid this place in future by planning ahead and purchasing items from a supermarket inland. read more

This is a cute little general store in St. George, ME. I stopped here with a friend because we had heard that the place has amazing pumpkin donuts. Sadly, the day we arrived, no pumpkin donuts were available. However, the super nice and helpful counter lady/cook recommended an awesome maple pumpkin bundt cake that she had personally baked. It looked glorious and my friend and I shared a slice. Incredible! The slice was richly flavored, moist, pumpkin-ey, and caramal-ey. We also picked up some lobster rolls, Utz's Old Bay seasoning flavored chips (if you've never had these before, you must try them), and cream soda for an impromptu picnic at the lighthouse. The lobster rolls were splendid. They were served traditionally in a toasted hot dog bun and the lobster meat was lightly dressed in mayo and herbs (perhaps dill?). The rolls made for a spectacular picnic at the Port Clyde lighthouse. Definitely hit this place up if you need a bite to eat near St. George. read more

Stopped into the Port Clyde General Store to grab a breakfast sandwich before loading the ferry over to Monhegan Island. It's a quaint little shop but has most essential for any day trip or even an overnight on Monhegan. You can crab snacks, soda, beer/wine, prepared food, bulk candy, produce, etc. We stopped in specifically to grab a few breakfast sandwiches for the ride over, as we had not eaten yet. We arrived to Port Clyde around 9:50 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. ferry (since you have to check in by 10:00 a.m.) and placed the order right when we got there. It took FOREVER! It was about 10:20 a.m. (30 minutes later) and the ferry captain was shouting to us to get on the boat or they were going to leave without us. It was a true #struggle because we were starving and had already paid for our sandwiches, but if we missed the ferry the next one wasn't until 4:30 p.m.! We asked the kitchen staff repeatedly the status, because if they weren't started (after 30 minutes!) we would just head on but if they were close to being done, we would risk it and wait. They kitchen really had no idea what they were doing, all very slow to answer questions and did not have a pulse on what was going on. They finally got us the sandwiches at 10:29 a.m. and we SPRINTED down to the ferry. They were delicious, however I don't know that they were worth the wait! Word to the wise: if you are hoping to get a hot sandwich and catching the ferry make sure you either allow 30-45 minutes or you constantly check in with the staff so they remember they are supposed to be cooking you something! Three stars for the selection available in the general store, and the quality of the sandwiches once we got them, but taking two stars off because the timing was seriously ridiculous. read more

Yes, the wait is long but I am usually not in a hurry. What really bugs me is the rude waitress. I ordered for my son and myself at the counter. He was standing next to me. The long wait was followed by a single plate with both orders. It was served with a smirk and the comment that I made a single order. When I explained what we had ordered, she only said that I had made a single order. I had to ask for another plate. i get this kind of service in Paris. not expected in Maine. read more
