1. 42 Day Cry Aged Bone-in Ribeye - O'Connor Premium - Berry's Creek, VIC 2. Humble Bakery Sourdough w/ Roasted Beef Fat Butter, Confit Garlic & Rosemary 3. Bruleed Duck Liver Parfait Creme Fraiche Pastry, Smoked Maple & Rhubarb 4. Chargrilled Tasmanian Octopus with Aji Amarillo, Pumpkin-Coconut Sauce & Salad of Newcastle Greens Hakurei Turnip and Butter beans 4. Triple Cooked Beef Fat Potatoes - Rosemary Salt Awesome, memorable experience to Australian beef. Ribeye flavor, crust, tenderness was easily one of the best steaks I've ever had, top 3 for sure. Duck Liver Parfait was incredibly rich and complex. Beef fat potatoes were triple cooked crispy and excellent. Octopus fell a little short of perfect tenderness. Service was professional and helpful. Very relaxed ambience. read more
Probably the best steak i have had in my life. We ordered the "28 Day Dry Aged F1 Wagyu", and shared the 850 gr of steak between 2 of us, together with a salad. The 850 gram of medium-rare steak presentation looked really nice in its simplicity. Immediately on the first bite, The steak was soooo flavorful and beefy. And the right amount of saltiness came through. Just the exact salt on the crusts for our taste. The crust was heavenly too. Can't describe how good the "just right amount of salt" added to the flavor. I found myself keep eating the steak just like that, without any add-ons or sauce, and still didn't get tired of it after the 3rd or even the 4th strip. We did order a bone marrow sauce, but we didn't like the sauce (thought it tasted fishy), and just kept eating the steak like that. Occasionally cleaned our palate with some salads and wine. Such juicy and beefy steak! The fat on the rib eye was so juicy as well, changing up the taste nicely. The amount of steak was just right for us 2. It was so good we almost were still craving for more at the end. read more

Porteño is my new place to go for steak in Sydney when I am in town. Argentinian food is known for its beef and you won't be disappointed here. I really enjoy the use of herbs and vinegar based sauces here as well. The accompanying dishes are also really good here as well. Not cheap but definitely worth the price for the quality and taste. Service is on point and restaurant has a clean and modern feel to it. Highly recommend coming here. Food: 4.5 stars Service: 4.25 star Overall: 4.25 stars Recommendations: Wagyu skirt steak, garlic rice, roasted asparagus and hummus, meat of the day The oven roasted asparagus was a special on my visit and I'm so glad that I ordered it. The asparagus was nicely cooked and paired really nicely with the hummus. The hummus is well dressed with olive oil and dill and served with a fried egg. I enjoyed this even more than the steak and that was fantastic. The Wagyu skirt steak is really great. The cut is quite thick for a skirt steak. It was cooked a nice medium rare. It is paired nicely with some roasted peppers. Definitely worth ordering if you are thinking about steak. I didn't think much of it when I ordered the garlic rice but wow it was really great. The rice is likely cooked in either a Dutch oven or skillet because you get a lot of nice crispy bits of rice. The rice isn't oily at all which is something I was worried about when I see garlic rice in the menu. I didn't get to order the house made focaccia but it looked really good and I would be surprised if it wasn't tasty. The daily meat choice is also really something I want to try next time I come. In the summer it is lamb and in the winter it is pork. The meat is cooked over an open fire and only served during dinner. read more
I've had Portenos on my radar for some time and finally had the opportunity while staying in Sydney. I think my husband, brother and I had a collective holding of breath when the waitress came to read the specials. It was a bit of a blur. I heard $250 this, wagyu, $270 that.... Holy crap we've made a horrible mistake!! I think we held our composure well enough and ordered some drinks whilst we perused a menu we had no idea we could afford. Thankfully we really had nothing to worry about. We ordered an indulgent selection of dishes that gave us a beautiful dining experience to be remembered. Starters of sliced pork belly, bread, halloumi and bone marrow. Followed by mains of smoked chicken, steak with chimichurri, fries and fennel salad. Served share style; we all tried every dish, we were all in heaven. My husband loved the steak and chimichurri; my brother and I praising the salad. Who praises salad?! Honestly, it was that good! We paid about $100pp including drinks which I think was more than reasonable given the beautiful food and service. Not to mention that inviting smokey aroma permeating the restaurant. Loved it! read more
Really great food, excellent service, but quite expensive. Good for a special occasion, the ambiance is very low lit and moody. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Steaks are delicious! Had the wagyu and it was melt in your mouth goodness. The chimichurri was excellent as a side. Will need to come back and try other menu items read more
I hate it when restaurants up-sell you water. What is worse is when you order one bottle and near the end of your meal, while you still have plenty of water in your glass to finish the meal, they open another $8 bottle of water and pour it in your glass without asking. I know, I could have said something at the time, but why did this restaurant do it? It must be greed because they also charged me $3 for 1 slice of bread. The food is very good here. The service is fair at best. For a $300 meal for 2 people I was not impressed. read more

The food and service were both excellent. There were multiple servers but the primary one was awesome. He was very personable and could immediately tell we were on vacation (the American accent was a pretty obvious giveaway). He asked if we were celebrating anything (as it turns out, yes we were - our honeymoon). He was so genuine. Probably one of my favorite waiters from the whole trip. We ordered a couple of small side dishes and a main entree to share (tapas). It was plenty of food even though we both came in very hungry. We were barely able to finish. As he cleared our plates he asked if there was anything else we needed and we politely declined. He then let us know that they were giving us a complimentary dessert to celebrate our honeymoon if we were didn't mind waiting a few minutes. Obviously we waited. The dessert was also good although we probably would've chosen a different one if we were picking it ourselves. But hey - it was free and it was a great chance to try something we wouldn't have otherwise had. 5 stars. read more

We were genuinely excited to eat here after hearing all the reviews, especially after seeing it featured on No Reservations. In the end we left pretty disappointed. The meat itself was great, but our dishes were swimming in olive oil and under-seasoned. The wagyu skirt steak was cooked beautifully, but cut along the grain and pretty stringy. I'm not happy about having to wait for our table (at the bar) despite having a reservation (on a Tuesday night). Also, the "hand-cut" part of the chimichurri description is really unnecessary. It's chopped up parsley and garlic with herbs, spices, and olive oil. read more

This place is no joke, the steaks were delicious. Typically they require reservations, however my girlfriend and I went to see if they could take us, and fortunately they did! Honestly we were NOT dressed for the occasion... board shorts, t shirt for me and shorts+sweater for my girlfriend but they seated us outside and we felt comfortable. Honestly the steaks were next level... soo tender and perfectly cooked. The beers were great, and probably the wine as well, however we didn't order any at the time. The server and host was very nice, caring and attentive. May have been the best meal of my Sydney vacation. read more

Visited courtesy of Anthony Bourdains visit and rave reviews. We did the $80 tasting menu (there's a $120option too). It was a lot of food! 3-4 plates from the starter section, 4 from the mains and 2 desserts. The stars if the meal were the Brussels sprouts, the fried cheese and the wagu beef! The other meat dishes were good, but not great. Service was good, but again not great. Overall good for the money but I'd only go for a special occasion not a regular night out. read more

Normally I don't mind spending premium amounts of money for food. Even for small serves, however I would have to say that Porteno is poor value for money. We spent close to $500.00 for 5 people and the food was far from what we were expecting. The quality of the meat was very disappointing. The Short Ribs at a price of $60.00 with its lacklustre flavour was dry, over cooked and chewy. The Eggplant was burnt and blended with burnt flakes littered throughout the slurried mixture. The Chuleta was chewy, leathery and had more fat than meat. Not the kind of fat you would expect to caramelise and emphasise the flavour, and no it was not marbling. Rather, it was grizzle which makes it hard to eat and adds no value to the dish. What is more, it was for a ransom.... Ooops I mean hansom fee of $80.00. Had the quality matched the price, I wouldn't be writing this. I strongly advise people to steer clear of Porteno if you value the quality of your food. Paying such a large sum for something which can easily be hit or miss is not a gamble you should be making with food. As for the service, it is a mixed bag. Pressure from wait staff to order, regardless of how much money you spend, clearing and calling away tables even when cutlery is not in the "finished" position, and not asking the diners if they are finished. Serving from the right with their left hand and clearing from the left with their right hand. While topping up glasses is appreciated, mixing water into a glass pre-poured with Sparkling doesn't help gain service points. Ultimately, I wouldn't care so much about these points if this was a local medium priced restaurant that wasn't trying to act "upper" class, however with the price you pay and the way the waitstaff are dressed and presented (I will admit, they get some points for dress code and uniform consistency), I would at least expect that the staff would know how to serve and clear a table. I give the place five thumbs down. But one star to be able to make the post. read more

The skirt steak basically melts in your mouth and was perfectly cooked! We had a great bottle of Malbec wine that the waiter recommended for us. Overall it was a wonderful dinner and the skirt steak was enough for my husband and I to share. read more

Wanted to go since Sunday but it was closed and also on Monday, called on Tuesday and the earliest we could get in was 8:30 so I'm thinking "this place must be really special, cuz so hard to get a table " It was actually quite good and the service very good as well, not sure if worth all the hype but we would go back if in Sydney again... read more

Love the place. Lively ambience and good service from the wait staff. Animal of the day is a must have item on the menu. Everything we ordered was delicious and its the closest to what Ive tasted in Buenos Aires, so pretty authentic Argentinian food which you can find on this side of the world. A must go if you are in Sydney. Bookings are essential as the place is almost always full. RSVP can be done by calling or by the Open Table app. Enjoy! read more

This one is the one that really LOCAL steak lovers rave about, so if you're visiting Sydney, don't miss it! Be sure to try it! Especially worth it! Their beef is ridiculously flavorful! Every bite has just the right combination of grease and meat flavor! Reservations are recommended (be prepared to pay for it too, but it's worth it!) Otherwise, there might not be a spot available The five of us ordered three steaks, a signature T bone, and as soon as the greasy meat came up, we knew these two would be right, and we feasted on the whole thing! Another order of dry age, but also a bite to eat can smell half a month! Although the price on the 200, but super worth point, especially if you are traveling to Australia, this mouthful of beef really have to eat! The other diaphragm we ordered was a fruitwood smoked one, with a heavy grassy aroma, but compared to the other two triple-digit steaks, it really paled in comparison! For appetizers, we chose the mozzarella , which was beautifully presented like a flower, and the blood sausage, which was served with green tomatoes, which had a very refreshing and special taste! It cost 700 for the five of us, but it could have been more expensive if we went with fewer people, but overall the advice for this one is: if you want a good steak, definitely go! You'll never regret eating it! A trip to Australia will make your trip worthwhile! read more
