I'm not sure what the problem was with other customers but this place is great! I was in the market for a new guitar. Jeff was patient as I tried about 10 guitars. He said just keep coming back until one of the guitars talks to you. I came back 5 times and there was one that had the feel and sound that I wanted. It was at the top of my budget and in a sunburst pattern that I would never have thought of buying. Jeff remarked how striking the colors were. On the 5th visit I decided it was purchase day. I played the three I liked the best and 4-5 new ones. In the end, I bought the one that talked to me. I am glad that I found this shop and could tap Jeff's vast knowledge of guitar manufacturers and models. I played many guitars and Jeff was very patient, giving me space but occasionally filling in some information about the construction or quality of the instruments. This place is an excellent shop for a guitar purchase. They also carry everything under the sun and have contracts for students instruments. read more

I just left here after having an absolutely horrible experience with customer service. We were trying to rent two instruments for my rising 6th grade twin girls. The girl at front wasn't very informed, but gave me the blank contracts to fill out, specifically stating that if we had good credit, they didn't need a co-signer and just to fill out all appropriate information and get it back to her. I filled them out with one (instead of the 2 personal references they ask for, because I don't keep my address book on hand) and was immediately told that I needed two personal references. I'll admit that I got frustrated because I had my SSN and personal information on the sheet to run my credit, so surely they weren't going to call both of my references to check on me. Especially since if they ran my credit score they'd see that I have excellent credit and an excellent score. She said they can't accept it without another reference. I said I don't have any addresses on me, and they suggested someone from my work. I told them that I'm a stay at home mom, that I don't work outside the home. They shrugged and stated policy. I figured out a friend to write down as the other personal reference and handed the contracts over again. I said that I hadn't signed it yet, that I was going to wait to sign it until the financials were filled out. Immediately, without looking at the contracts, I was stopped again. This time they insisted since I don't have a job, that I need a co-applicant. They never ran my credit, never checked my background, nothing. They refused to check on anything and insisted I get a consigner, even though she said when she handed me the contracts that if I had good credit, that we wouldn't need a co-applicant. They basically turned me away and refused to rent to me because I'm a stay at home mom. What if I was a military spouse and my husband was deployed? Would you not rent to me because I don't work???? Just unbelievable. I got annoyed. They wouldn't run my check, wouldn't do anything. They refused my business until my husband comes in on his day off (45 minutes from our home) to co-sign. They kept standing on policy. Just unbelievable. I could walk in to a car dealership and buy a car, but I can't rent a $28/mo flute? Then the girl tried to say that they had to keep my paper for their records, but it had my SSN and my AMEX number on it, so insisted they return the forms to me. Also, I was in on the last day of an inventive to rent early, so I don't qualify for that, either. To be honest, I don't want to ever step foot in that store again. I'm not quite sure my girls even want to play instruments anymore after witnessing this and being turned away. read more

Im a seasoned hobbyist who paid a visit to Portman Music today. Randy (pro-audio/keyboards) is a nice and helpful gentleman who took care of my needs. His counterpart had an ego and wasn't friendly: he was dressed in a suit and tie and hesitated to greet, smile or reply to questions. Most employees in the store are nice as well. While the store is well-equipped, they do not give discounts like the bigger chains do. Also, generally, the store closes earlier than the Guitar Center next door. My advice for the management would be to fix the few issues mentioned; that will make the shopping experience better for the customer. read more

Can someone please explain to me how this place is still in business? I wanted an electric piano ... went in, but couldn't get any assistance at all. Meanwhile this jack*** is playing around with one of the keyboards ... just screwing with the sounds ... not a kid, a grown man, and this went on so long I wanted to break the guy's fingers. He was also blocking me from trying three of the keyboards, while he clearly wasn't buying. The staff will completely ignore you in favor of chatting about weekend plans. Ready to pay good money but got jerked around by the staff. 7 people just standing around doing nothing and all I wanted was to talk to the guy that I was promised would spend a couple of minutes with me who would do the work. This place must be heaven for serious music lovers. They have departments for pianos, violins, guitars, drums, DJ stuff, etc...whatever you want, and there's an expert working in each area to make sure you get all the right information/equipment. They also have a bunch of sheet music and miscellaneous things. I haven't taken any music lessons so I can't attest to that, but I always see people going in for them, so it can't be too bad. I'd say the prices for the instruments is fair, and there's a points system - although I'm not sure what the points are for. I bought a nice keyboard, piano bench, and pedal for about $750 - not too shabby, and I love my keyboard. read more

These guys know nothing about customer service or their business. I brought in a guitar for repair with bad piezo pick-ups. The guy did not know what piezo pickups are or where they were located on the guitar. He did not know that they were a Godin Dealership because "they didn't have any on the walls". The manager without any information made it clear that this was not under warranty. Terrible customer service. Arrogant and a complete lack understanding of retail skills. Will never go back. I love visiting music shops when I'm visiting new places, and this did not disappoint! I will start out my review saying I only interacted with the guitars section, so I can't speak to the rest of the store, but my experience was excellent. I felt bad rolling in about half an hour before closing, but the staff greeted me and helped me all the same. The section of guitars, amps, and effects was incredible, with brand new releases from top brands on the shelves ready to be played. They carried a selection of effects that I have trouble finding stocked at all the big box stores. I was shopping specifically for a fuzz pedal, and I had a great conversation with a very knowledgeable and kind salesman about what they had in stock. All in all, I was incredibly impressed and will definitely give them my business again if I'm ever back in the area! read more

Awesome instrument selection but an awful experience with the staff. Having been told the wrong information by a previous employee about returning an instrument before the three month instrument rental time, I repeated this to another employee and got a very bad attitude from her. I told the employee that I was told this information and if I knew what the correct information was, I wouldn't have rented the instrument knowing I would return it early. They returned the money and I thanked the employee on the way out...no response from her. I don't see why you have to act such a way towards a customer especially since it's not my fault I was misinformed by you guys. read more

I'm not sure where all these negative reviews are coming from, I am in this store at least once every two weeks and I never have any issues with the staff, in fact they always seem to go out of there way to assist me and get me what I need! The sales staff is attentive and takes time to find answers to my questions even if that means calling the manufacturer for me. Don't expect Butch Breddy to take you seriously if you are a female drummer. Expect to be completely ignored... and have to stand there and wait at the counter while he plays the drums (quite poorly) instead of helping you. My wife and I stopped in on Sunday 10/20/19 to see about trade in values for some old equipment that I had, and to look into the purchase of a powered speaker. Your associate, Randy Lowery, was most helpful. He was able to take care of our needs while also tending to other customers in a very professional and courteous manner. He let me know the actual selling price and the trade in values for my old equipment. He gave me comparison figures and demonstrations of multiple powered speakers and mixers with effects choices to fit the parameters that I was looking to fill. He let my wife have a chair to sit in (she is somewhat disabled), while I was checking things out. He discussed with me other options in a lessor price range because my wife and I were concerned about our budget. He did all of this and attended to other customers without trying to push or rush us into buying something more expensive. We were thoroughly pleased with his service, expertise, pleasant manner, and professional conduct. Our purchase ended up costing the same as the single speaker we had intended to purchase, even though we were able to end up with a comparable speaker, speaker stand, mixer with effects, and cord for the connection of the two. My wife and I wanted to let you know that this was the most enjoyable purchasing experience that we have had in many, many years. Randy is a wonderful shining example of what we would expect of any salesman in any business and needs to be commended for his performance and considered as a model for all sales persons. Just went in today to look at guitar's. The sales rep that assisted me was Phillip McDonald. He did an awesome job helping me out. I am a very hard customer to please but with the great customer service that I received it could not have gone any better. The rest of the staff I dealt with were also polite as well. They match an Internet price I found and they also honor their military discount. I drove through Savannah all day going to different music stores and Portman's was by far the best. This place has TERRIBLE customer service with respect to cashier staff. I went in to price an acoustic gutair and upon leaving the shop I was sitting in my car returning a text message prior to leaving when a store employee came out to my car and placed a tow away notice on my windshield, stating parking was for Portman's customers only! I found this most alarming since I had left the store only moments before (approximately 2 minutes), and I did not visit any other stores. I took the notice back inside and stated to the individual who had placed the notice on my vehicle that I had indeed been shopping in Portman's and had left only moments ago. The employee was rude and dismissive, thus I will certainly be purchasing my acoustic guitar elsewhere. read more

I needed my instrument repaired and went in to Portmans for an estimate. The lady who was helping me wasn't very friendly and the estimate ended up being extremely expensive. I decided to try the Musikhaus, which was recommended to me by my child's band director. They are just down the road from Portmans, also on Abercorn, and the sales woman was absolutely wonderful. She gave us the estimate and it was half the price of what Portmans wanted to charge. I do not reccomend Portmans but I would reccomend MUSIKHAUS!!!!!!! read more

I had been advised against going here by multiple people in town over the years, but I needed some guitar strings and was on Abercorn, so I thought I would give it a try. Long story short, we were browsing the drum section when my son played a beat with his open hand on one of the display sets. It wasn't loud, it wasn't prolonged. Just a quick test. The bald gentleman who was standing in the drum section conversing with someone turned around and smugly muttered "Yeah, not good." He then turned back around and resumed his conversation. There were no signs or any type of indication that the set was not to be used or touched. Seemed pretty rude and short-sighted on his part. My son's drum kit is nearing the end of its lifespan, and we have been looking to buy another kit. I put the guitar strings back and decided to purchase them (and a drum set) elsewhere. Customer service is important, especially when you are selling expensive musical instruments. read more

We had a horrible customer experience at Portman's today. I called this morning to inquire about weekday afternoon/evening music lessons and instruments for my 2 kids. I was told that there was plenty of availability for violin lessons (which my daughter had her heart set on) and that, if we came by the store, the staff would be happy to help us explore the best instrument options for my son. When I mentioned this to my family, the kids were so excited that we immediately loaded up the whole family in the car and drove the 30+ minutes to the store - intent to lease or purchase two instruments today and sign up for music lessons. When we arrived at the store, there were plenty of staff members milling around but we were unhelpfully passed among 3 of them before being dumped at the "customer service" desk. At customer service, we were told that no violin lessons were available on weekdays and that my son was too young for the instruments that had been discussed over the phone this morning (piano and guitar). No one offered to us select an instrument. We all left very disappointed. It was the most shockingly horrible customer service experience I've had in a place where real sums of money can be spent. I hate that this is how my kids were introduced to musical instruments. read more
