While browsing the vendors at Essex Market, my friends and I stopped at Porto Rico for a post-lunch coffee. One of them had tried their coffee at a another location and liked it, so we each decided to order a drink here. CORTADO - 3.40 I love how affordable it is compared than other cortados I've had in the city. It's literally 3.40 including tax, which is at least 50 cents to a dollar cheaper. The cortado was fine, but it didn't really stand out. I'd probably try a different drink next time. My friend had an Americano, which he seemed to enjoy. The coffee pricing here is reasonable, and the vendor's setup is minimal and unpretentious. read more

This coffee shop location is located in Essex Market. It is a very small booth area. I waited in line for kind of a little while as what I assume to be a regular was being helped as he and the guy taking his order seemed to know each other. The employee could have said excuse me I have to take the next guest but didn't. I got a latte and it was not good to me. Tasted flavorless and just wasn't my cup of tea. Stopped by to grab a cold brew before crossing the bridge - it's located inside essex market, which means you can peruse the other vendors and get food elsewhere if you're looking to make a larger trip of it. Coffee was good and very strong, and reasonably priced as well! Would certainly recommend for anyone needing a caffeine fix in the area. read more

My husband go to coffee shop for the best hot americano. I usually go for the iced coffee but if I'm feeling fancy, I would get the iced latte. Staffs are super friendly and when they accidentally made an iced americano instead of a hot one, the barista was very apologetic and quickly made us another. Iced coffee was not water down at all and every sip makes me want to take another sip immediately. read more

Porto Rico Importing is a NYC institution. Best coffee in the neighborhood hands down, and it's not $6 a cup, which is rare these days. These people know wtf they are doing. The coffee is proper, that's why they've survived for the last 200 years in Manhattan. This is an NYC coffee shop at its best. Any hater's writing bad reviews are extremely sus, and are probably Karen's IRL. Try the ice coffee, with oat, and a splash of Chai, also known as the CHAI ME TO THE MOON! Honestly, I knew better. Porto Rico is a favorite in my household so when the caffeine withdrawal headache hit this Saturday and we were near the market, I figured we'd give this location a shot against my better judgment. Let me preface this by saying we knew things would be different with this new Essex Market. This wasn't going to be an easy transition. But, at the very least, we expected the stores that made the transition and the NYC staples to be similar. Normally we pay $1 per drip coffee at any Porto Rico spot, which we normally opt for when we're picking up beans on our weekend errands. When we arrived we saw they were charging almost double their normal rate. We were told $3.90 for two small drip coffees at first, and when I went to hand in a $20 bill, the cashier suddenly raised it to $4.40 for no reason. I called him on it but he said it was "tax". I'm not about to split hairs over $0.60, but also that doesn't make sense. The coffees were $1.75 each, which should take it to $3.50 (and $3.80 after-tax). Somehow we were upcharged another $0.60 on top of that. Not a big deal. The coffee was still okay, but the shadiness of this experience just ironed in that this new location is just as much of a sham as we had thought it would be. Unless, unbeknownst to me, NYC suddenly started charging 25% tax. Overall, I'd avoid it and the whole new Essex Market as it's pretty apparent everywhere here has started upping their prices and giving less service to afford the new developer's rent. read more

This small branch of Porto Rico is located in the Essex Street Market. The space is crammed with bags of coffee beans. It gets the job done but if you want to experience the eye-opening revelation of why people become so invested in coffee and what Porto Rico Importing Co. has to offer, I recommend heading to their main store located in West Village. It seemed to me that staff at West Village is more passionate and willing to help out customers more thoroughly than those who work here. read more

I've gotten their iced latte and iced coffee and both are very good. Their iced latte is probably one of the best I've ever had - the coffee is strong and the flavor is rich. I've had iced lattes in other coffee shops and sometimes the coffee tastes a bit diluted. I love to take my iced latte up to the seating area upstairs at the Essex market and do work. The perfect "cafe"! I definitely want to buy their coffee beans next time, I always see other customers purchasing beans. read more

This is the newest--and smallest--location of Porto Rico. It's conveniently located in the Essex Street Market, and they recently upgraded the size of their cubicle, moving a few stalls uptown, so they're able to sell more varieties of beans--as well as more appliances, and even some cookies and cakes to go with your coffee. (They even usually have gluten-free and vegan options from "This Chick Bakes™".) This location is eminently convenient for me when I go downtown twice a day to walk my Broadway/Canal dog; I usually duck in here to get my 65¢ decaf--a refill of regular or decaf of the day is only 65 cents!--before I board the J train to Canal. I still prefer to get my beans at their St. Mark's location, which is closer to me anyway; they're more likely to have the variety I want. read more

I will preface this with "I am not a coffee connoisseur," but I know a good deal when I see one. There's something about the hodgepodge, borderline hoarders quirkiness of the various Porto Rico shops, this one at ESM being the smallest of them all I think. Simply put, if you want a more than decent, cheap cup of coffee, Porto Rico is here to serve, going on decades now. Certainly, don't end up a caffeine-less hell-on-wheels like I did one morning when you fail to realize the Market doesn't open until 8am and there's no time for plan B. However, anyone who shows up appropriately between the hours of 8(:15)am-7pm M-F should be pleased with a lovely cup of joe at an even lovelier price. My love for Porto Rico resurged the other day when I sought again to avoid Starbucks, but needed big to-go cartons of coffee for a staff meeting. After not finding any clues on the website, to my lovely surprise at the ESM stall the next morning, they do have 96oz. barista boxes! And the counter guy didn't act at all like I was putting him out of sorts with my rather rushed request. :: Shout out to you whose name I'm sorry I don't know!!! :: So now none of you have excuses for defaulting to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts in such scenarios! I would advise to leave about 15 min per box for brewing and such, but if you want to be part of spreading the local love for this "historic" (read: anything older than 10 yrs in this town) NYC-born/bred coffee chain, then keep Porto Rico actively on your radar! read more

Place is nice and friendly. The coffee bean aroma fills the shop and market. But their regular blend is really not good. One time i thought it was end of day brew so i gave it another shot. These guys do not deserve your business - or at the very least the owners should consider a staffing change. Went to buy some beans in the afternoon, knew what we wanted and ready to pay in cash so should've been a quick transaction. Arrived at 3.55pm, stood there patiently waiting as we watched them reorganise and clean the counter. BOTH attendants ignored us until 4pm, which is when they turned around to tell us that they close at 4pm and cannot serve us. This isn't the first time service has been lacking or non existent at this store - during any time of day/hours of opening - they really do not care to sell coffee at all. Wanted to support this local business but will no longer especially during these times where there are other small businesses with actual customer service that are shutting down around the city. read more

Whenever i'm on the LES and need a coffee. This is MY SPOT. Located inside Essex Street Market, Porto Rico serves out really good coffee. Along with whole beans that they can freshly grind for you. I'm not a hot coffee drinker, so I always get mine iced. It's really cheap to get an iced coffee here. Less than $3 and the quality is great. I grab an iced coffee, roam around the market and make my away on Rivington and hit up shops there. read more
