It's a bit overwhelming to shop here, as the space is jam-packed with merchandise and has low lighting. Moreover, scores of tea types, tea blends and their variations make it challenging for me to decide. Yesterday I decided to get Blood Orange Blended Tea in order to give it a try and restructure the routine of such blends as English Breakfast and Earl Grey. Tremendous tea selection! Throw in rich history (founded in 1895) and a charming neighborhood (West Village), and McNulty's is a must visit for any tea/coffee connoisseur. Initially I was confused since the shop looked dim and closed though I walked by when it was supposed to be open. And there was scaffolding in front, but luckily the door granted me entry, and a heavenly coffee smell greeted me. I was the only customer for a while which was pure bliss until some others came in and since McNulty's is cozy-sized, led to more complications navigating the aisles. Anyway, the employees are laid-back and the way it works, you tell them what you want in what amount, and they will prepare your tea for you. I cannot believe this place still exists with all the way retail going! The last time I was there was 1979 when I moved to New Mexico. Every time I drink a cup of good coffee, I think about this place. It was the first time that I got the wonders of real coffee. And what it really means for the world! Real coffee growers from around the world at market value. At that point I was drinking instant coffee with my mom that's what she drank , I was 20 and then a whole world of coffee opened up to me. I became a real coffee drinker after that. I don't just drink coffee. I am a coffee drinker like I identify as that. The people there taught me about beans, and how to store them. McNulty's has the best coffees and teas I ever tasted. In business since the late 1800s on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, they only stock coffee, teas and brewing equipment. I started using them in the 1980s when a coffee guru told me about them. Back then the owner, David would ship before payment with an invoice. Alas those days are gone but David and his amazing products and service o are still there. They don't gouge on shipping costs and just pass them on. They have real Jamaican Blue Mountain and real Kona as well as Puerto Rican coffee. There selection includes all types from the Americas, Africa and Asia. They also have terrific blends like "Old Judge". Dave will make recommendations and is not hasty or pushy. He and his colleagues are very customer focused. They grind to order or ship whole beans. The whole bean has a longer shelf life. I love Mocha Java, Mexican and Kenyan. My blend is old Judge and I love Typhoo which is the original British "cupper" tea. Also their Russian teas. If you go in it is like stepping back in time. The wood floors are burnished by the customers who came in since the 1800s. The aroma is intoxicating. There prices are very fair and you are treated like royalty by people like David who knows more about coffee and tea than anyone I ever met. Shipping is fast and efficient. I really really like this tea and coffee shop. It has a great amount of teas to choose from, and the staff is very attentive. It is slightly hard to find though, but once you find it it's definitely a gem. PROS - great selection of teas of all kinds - good pricing, worth what you pay for - good selection of equipment - staff knowledgeable and polite CONS - spacing is really tight in there to maximize selection. My friend Mark introduced me to McNulty's in the late 1960's when we were undergrads at a college in Jersey City. He was an NYC guru and knew all of the great places to shop. My thing at the time was good, hot tea - most of the coffee I tried back then was bitter. That included a cup I had on a date to see Tony Bennett at the Waldorf Astoria (I was a good date, back in the day). I told the owner what I was drinking and he made some suggestions. I first bought some quality English and Irish tea bags - all we had at home was Lipton's. That's when I learned that Irish Breakfast was a magic elixir. I went back for more but the owner then suggested Assam in loose leaf form and a simple infuser. Wow! The taste was even more exciting and I have had a bag of Assam or Golden Assam on the shelf ever since. Their coffee choices were a little different since I started from a different place - no frame of reference except mom's instant Sanka. Eventually he picked a kona ground for French press and, for the first time, I had a cup of coffee that didn't taste like crap! Kona is now an occasional pleasure since I still drink a lot of Assam tea. I love this place. It's a trip back to a great time in my youth and the folks in the store have consistently helped me learn and grow in my appreciation of one of life's simple pleasures. This is a cute little tea shop with a wide variety of teas. They sell most of the teas by weight so you can get just the amount you're looking for. So supermarket Twinnings bags aren't authentic enough for you anymore? Needing to go more in depth with your leaves and grinds? McNulty's Tea is a wonderful local little shop crammed full of tea and coffee. Not unusual for NYC, per se, but a cool experience. This place 1- has hundreds of different kinds of tea, 2- looks like a dark, haunted movie set, and 3- is arguably the best smelling place in the city. Plus, it's almost 125 years old! I bought one milk oolong from here, and to date, it remains the only tea I've ever thrown out. It had an aroma very, very similar to that of buttered popcorn and I just couldn't stand it. After doing some research, I realized it must have been a flavored milk oolong and not an "authentic" milk oolong. However, I was able to find a Java Santosa tea that tastes and smells exactly like the tea I got hooked on in Indonesia, so that was a win. I recommend you search for that one if you're looking for a light, malty, floral tea that goes well black or with milk. $7 for a 4 oz bag, which serves 20-30 cups, is the average price. It's worth exploring here if you're searching for an obscure flavor you got turned onto in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East, or if you just want to be introduced to something new. This cozy tea shop is not for high tea rather it's for your loose leaf needs. They have some imported bagged tea (mostly English brands). Their loose leaf tea variety is great. They have a section of decaf tea, they have many regional teas (India, China, Japan) and many blends (Irish, English, Russian, Fruit, etc) but it's so much more than that. They have a chocolate mint tea, dragon fruit tea, creamy earl grey and other surprising tea flavors. They offer some rare teas, tea balls, as well as coffee. I love this place. Visit anytime I'm in Manhattan for a few days. Have brought family and friends--the ambience is great. But the reason I decided to review is that I love purchasing their tea through the mail. I order from numerous places but this is my go-to for Lapsang Souchong and other China black teas. Also, the Dang Ho Pa is a great oolong. The mailing costs are higher than elsewhere, so I tend to stock up when I put in an order. I wish they had more teaware and mugs (which are usually sold out) but here it's all about the tea. read more

For tea-philes, this is mecca. Don't let the simple storefront fool you. Inside lies an Indian Jones-like cavern of wondrous treasures inspired by the miracle of camellia sinensis--from pure loose leafs to aromatic blends to convenient packages to molded cakes. My personal favorites were the delicate jasmine pearls, as well as the astonishing breadth of pu-erh grades (the latter being my favorite tea of all time). My mom hails from mighty London town, so I've been reared on tea, glorious tea. While I am not as picky as other family members when it comes to what goes in my cuppa, I appreciate places and people who pay special attention to the art of tea making. And at Mc Nulty's, it is most certainly an art form. Let's start off by the service. The people who work here are knowledgeable, attentive, happy to give suggestions but are by no means pushy (a rare combination). After literally walking to a dozen or so big glass jars, lifting the lids and inhaling a gloriously long whiff of each, I decided to get down to business. I forget the man's name who helped me (older white guy, slender?), but he showed me the full spectrum of their offerings and gave his advice while being careful to hear me out on what I wanted/needed. I ended up getting the stronger variety of their lapsang souchong (a smoky tea which my brother adores) and a fruity herbal delight with all sorts of tropical berries and flowers. My fiance grabbed a few bags of different green tea varieties for his family. Bags are available ranging from 1/4 lb to 1 lb in size, with prices that range from $3.50 for a quarter pound (for the simpler green tea and herbal varieties) to $20 a quarter pound for some of the rarer kinds. But most seem to be in the $5-6 per 1/4 lb range. read more
