Very clearly separating the old city center, this massive gate is on the south west corner of the Piazza Bra. The beautiful stone archways also have a modern clock with the current time. Passing through these gates is like passing into the old city and imagining the many thousands that have done so over centuries.
The gates date back to as much as 1257 and were part of the separation of the city from the sub-urban countryside. The doors are formed by two arches with round arches, terminated at the top by a dovetail battlements; between the two arches there is the clock installed in 1872. The construction materials used were Veronese marble for the lower part and bricks for the upper part, corresponding to the covered walkway and the battlements. On the right of the door is the Pentagona tower, a crenellated defensive tower from the municipal era.
