Dominating the statue that used to have his name, Dante stands with his arms crossed and holding his works in his left hand while he looks down at us disapprovingly. Dante Alighieri (c.1265 - 1321) is known as the author of the Divine Comedy that is widely considered as one of the most important poems of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. His use of the Tuscan dialect for works such as The New Life (1295) and Divine Comedy helped establish the modern-day standardized Italian language. His work set a precedent that important Italian writers such as Petrarch and Boccaccio would later follow.
Dante lived here in Verona from 1312 to 1319, which are the very years in which Shakespeare set "Juliet and Romeo".
The statue is here since 1863 when it was erected to celebrate the 600th year of his birth. Stop by and check it out.
