The Lilydale General is brand new and it's obvious that the creators care about good produce and know a thing or two about what the public are wanting these days. I spied products from Mount Zero and milk from Jonsey's Dairy. The fit out is great, though the music choice when I was there did nothing to add to the atmosphere. Metal? In the afternoon? In a cafe that has decor reminiscent of an American Diner meets hipster Melbourne Cafe? Very odd indeed. My long black was decent enough. Any bitterness I'd chalk up to the darker style roast of Coffee Supreme, rather than the technique of the barista. It's certainly going to be where I head when I find myself on the way out to the Yarra Valley and in need of a hit. Hopefully next time I'll be here at the right time for breakfast as the menu has some interesting options including fish tacos and pancakes!

In summer it is a great place to relax with the parrots and other bird life. In winter a spot by the fire is sort after, and a warming experience, but i still prefer the balcony with heaters. Stonehouse Cafe is a family run business and located in a historical building. The menu has traditional European and modern Australian cuisine and i can recommend the chicken burger. Filling and fill of flavour and juicy chicken. They do coffee well and the cake cabinet is tempting, look at your own risk. The staff are fast and friendly and I would feel confident recommending this place to locals and tourists alike.

On a wet summers day the mist was rolling in so it made it all the more pretty. Everything about the cafe is thought thru, from the bakery to finishing touches of the decor. Our waiter was efficient and had a great sense of humour. He certainly made it all the more memorable. The drinks came quickly followed by our delicious meals. We were there for breakfast but there is everything from buying a loaf of bread and toasting it yourself, pastries to the purchase of three different sized picnic baskets. And if the salads on display are anything to go by I'll certainly be back to order one and stroll through their gardens. They are currently expanding the gardens. But there is plenty to do! From lawn bowls, children's play areas, picnic area and meet bubble and squeak the residents of the pig sty. I couldn't recommend the Piggery Cafe enough. I will certainly be back. There's no phone signal (for us anyway) so it's a rare chance to fully focus without the temptation of peeking at the phone. The meals took a fair stint to arrive, but we weren't there for fast food and the location is incredibly beautiful so it was a nice chance to stop and breathe. Speaking of breathing - we were seated outside, and every time the wind gusted our way there was a waft of .... I don't know what. Sewage? Pigs? It's probably now more of a romanticised version of a Melbourne Milk Bar, but that's not to say it's not authentic. Rowena is still in the same Greek family (given away by the large Greek mural on the wall) - you can often see several generations sitting at the tables and behind the counter. It still functions as a Milk Bar - you can still buy milk there, but it's probably not the place for your weekly shop. That said, they definitely do have the essentials - and they also stock a some great homemade take-away meals - and when I say homemade, they genuinely do seem homemade. I'm a big fan of the Rowena burger, which has caramelised onion just right. My only gripe with their breakfasts is they don't butter the bread - which seems to be to some people's taste, but not mine. The service can be variable. Very much depends on the people on the day - That said, it's always friendly. You just sometimes need to put up a smoke signal to get served. Also, they won't split bills, so if you've got a large group, be prepared to sort the maths out yourself. Out the back there are some longer tables and a sunny garden. You need to walk though the kitchen to get there - which initially feels a little weird, but rest assured it's common practice.

I sampled the Bacon and Egg Burger which came with all the usual suspects but actually had TWO fried eggs on it with bacon and cheese, etc. Very tasty and very filling. Another person tried to the fruit toast - very fresh, tasty and nicely presented. Still another tried the poached eggs and enjoyed them a great deal. I've had all day breakfast (poached, sour dough, usual extras), chicken salad was ok (chicken a bit dry), lamb salad much better. They do sell little cakes and muffins etc to either eat in or take out. I must say, not all looked appealing, but there was a great variety. Parking could be an issue at busy times. The council seem to think that by taking away parks, it "beautifies" the street. Uh, not so much. But if you go for breakfast early enough, it's a good spot. I highly recommend eating here.
