As a child, it was magical; as an adult, I felt their website and pictures oversold the experience. The event barn was minimal. The crafts included coloring pages on tables, and most pages had already been drawn on. The letters to Santa were just pages laid on the table for kids to fill in the blanks. The smore pits had minimal flame and were so smokey you couldn't enjoy standing by them. The camels were neat but not set up as a live nativity like pictures online. No actual people for the live nativity, and sheep, donkey, and camels were just in fenced stalls. The train ride was again neat for the kids, but the storytelling was pre-recordings played over train speakers,, and the caroling was 2 high school students singing/yelling along (very out of tune) to pre-recorded songs played over speakers. They reference cast members performing on the train but it was only people walking through the car in not-so-great costumes (hair handing out of costumes heads). No actual performances beyond the elf that pouted in the corner most of the ride. Be warned that the line for the actual bathroom near the train is long. The porter johns set up near the event barn are clearly the cheapest option for them to rent with no "flushing" or sinks. They were covered in mud, and my child was too scared to even try sitting on the toilet since it was just a very disgusting open pit. I worried about my grandparents slipping on the mud inside. Again, kids loved it, but I very much felt like the website did not represent the experience. read more

They didn't have enough milk for my kids, the performance was poor, the props were coming apart, it was per my 16 year old a scam. This was nothing close to The Polar Express experience they advertise. We also froze the entire time on the train. When we departed the train our kid were hungry. We were told they were out of just about every because its end of season. So we paid full price to get so much less. Never again would I try this or recommend anyone to try it. read more

We liked the accommodations, the friendly staff. A light lunch that hit the spot. Though we weren't in a climate controlled car, the open windows across the aisle allowed for cross-ventilation that air conditioning can't provide. The young lady and young man serving our lunches were very attentive to our needs, and we chatted along the route, which made the ride more enjoyable. I was gifted a ticket for my birthday and really enjoyed my ride. We sat in car D (climate controlled) - dining with four course meal (appetizer, salad, main course, dessert) with complimentary bread (the cornbread was so good - it tasted like cake!) The car was not too crowded with 7 or 8 groups of 2-4 people so we all had a river side view. Madelyn (and Trenton (I think)) served us and were very attentive. My party tried both appetizers (meatballs and hummus with veggies)- both very good, we tried both the sea bass and filet - both excellent choices. The cheesecake for dessert was generously portioned and two people could share one - they were so big. The ride through the trough canyon was so beautiful. I would definitely come back during the fall when the foliage changes. The ride is smooth and very pleasant. I really enjoyed the history lesson throughout given by the tour guide - I learned a lot of new interesting facts. There are four eagle nests and the tour guide points them out over the intercom system. There is an observation car at the front of the train that you can walk to throughout the tour and there is a gondola at the very front of the train that is open air with no cover that you can ride but you can't walk to it while the train is moving. Once you are the gondola, you can't come off until the train stops once the transit through the trough is complete. I would definitely ride the Potomac Eagle again and ride to the end of the line at Petersburg or the other tours offered throughout the year. read more

Enjoyed a three hour train ride on a beautiful Friday evening. Saw bald eagles and their nests. Lots of deer. The train was comfortable. Our hostess was friendly and engaged with us throughout the tour. We had the five course meal, which had highs and lows. The dessert options were delicious. Three of the other four courses included crackers, chips and bread. This was in addition to cornbread and biscuits (a little heavy on the baking soda) to begin the meal. However, the scenery and company of good friends made for a very enjoyable evening. read more

It was a little under a 2 hr. drive to reach Romney, WV. Booked a Sunday scenic ride for the 1 pm departure. Plenty of parking on grassy area. Pick-up tickets at will call. Coach seating or club seating (includes meal service). Boarding opened at 12:40 pm. Club seats are cushioned, high-back, bench-style, with a reversible back (an employee helped me with reversing the seat) so passengers can face in either direction. Windows may be opened; limited heat is also available. Each section also had 2 tables with chairs which was a nice option for passengers to enjoy playing card games or dining on their packed food/snacks. A concession car is available to purchase snacks and drinks. Cash only (noted on website), but I forgot to bring cash and was able to use a credit card (purchases were written down and card was charged towards the end of the ride). Small lunch bags or coolers are permitted; please, no oversize or rolling coolers. Hotdogs, popcorn, nachos (chilli and chesse), candy, chips, bottled water, soda, sports drinks... A gift shop also rides along. Items for sale: postcards, puzzles, handheld fans, whistle, sweatshirts, tees, etc. A gondola ride (open top passenger car) with bench seating about halfway on the trip for about 45 minutes. No one under 6 allowed to ride. During our scenic ride, there were 9 sightings of eagles! We listened to brief historical facts along the way. We passed Sears Catalog homes, saw kayakers on the South Branch Potomac River. Helpful and friendly staff members (from departure to arrival)! I went on the North Pole train ride with my sister, her family and our stepmom today. We had a blast! The actors were great! Milk and cookies were served and the kids all got a candy can and met Santa. After the train ride, a bluegrass(?) band was playing in a tented area where you could buy hot chocolate. There was also a Country Roads sing-a-long. It was nice to get out and feel Christmas-y! read more

It was lousy diner chairs and a plain table. Fodd was just so so. Train ride was very boring and could mostly just see trees beside the tracks. NOT worth the price. read more

We spent $307 on club car tickets for a three hour ride. It came with a meal. When we arrived at will call our tickets were not there, the ticket manager informed me I would have to go to the office to hunt down the tickets. -okay, no biggie, stuff happens! But five star experience they are marketing would be them bringing the tickets to me, not me hunting for them. Additionally the staffs stress was palpable to you as the guest. It felt like maybe some folks had called out? All of that would have been fine, but one employee in particular was so overly familiar and rude that my husband and I were physically taken aback. This happened twice in a row. This was supposed to be something special on our honeymoon and this event was not at all what we expected. Then the food was mediocre and cold. All of these things combined really made a distasteful experience. Would never spend this amount to come and be treated poorly again. Some employees were very kind and working very hard. Brenda, Caleb, the historian, the servers in our car, Randall, the eagle spotter on back of train, all were working double time to make the experience special. It was just tarnished by one employees ugliness. Views on the train were very pretty I will say. read more

My daughter and I joined some friends and other children for the Polar Express ride. There's a few things to keep in mind that I may have missed on the website, but wanted to point out for my review. If you want to go as a group, you have to all buy your tickets at the exact same time under one order to end up in the same train. It's very important. Otherwise you have to do what we did and negotiate your way on because all the seats are reserved. You should also arrive early because there are a lot of activities and things you can do before the train ride and if you go on the evening one as we did, the kids are much too tired at the end to do the other stuff. Our children were all under 10 years old. I highly recommend you go at the evening ride though, because otherwise you miss out on all the Christmas lights and they are beautiful. The children only get a drink and a cookie which is actually kind of good because there are no bathrooms on the train. The show during the ride is adorable. Some of the costumes can be construed as creepy but they made sure everyone was comfortable. Santa came on the train, which was so cute for the kids. They even gave out coal to some of the adults which was really funny. All in all we had a really great time I just wish we had more time at the front end so we could've enjoyed more of the experience. If I had to point out anything negative I would say it is the boarding procedures. But there's not much flexibility it's a train, so what can you do? You have to go down the narrow hallway, and go from train to train. It did not work out for one of us because she has claustrophobic, but they were very considerate and let her go all the way at the end so she didn't feel trapped. I did feel really bad for one of the pregnant women that was on the train because there was no bathroom. read more

The overall experience was good. We wanted to see eagles and we did. We paid for the premium service since the package was the best bang for the buck, but the food was not up to par. Not what we ordered, not given a chance to make a change or hey would you like something else? The fish was supposed to be a mango peach salsa and I got a cucumber onion tomato which was disappointing. The steak was overcooked. We are gluten-free and expected a chocolate cake but instead got banana/grapes/orange slices. What?? Not what I paid for! the staff is great the food not so much for the price. On August 17 my wife and I along with my cousin had an amazing time on the Potomac Eagle "trough" dinner excursion. This was all of our first time. Everything from the time we got there to the time we left was awesome. The staff was pleasant, friendly and helpful and everything ran like a well oiled machine. The train moved along at a slow pace while a lady gave details about the different homes and other buildings along the way. There was a lot of farmland with cattle and corn fields. However the real highlight was the mountains,the river, the wildlife, the eagles were certainly the stars of the show. For Dinner we had the orange roughy it was very tasty. The meal started with a fresh salad, my wife is allergic to cucumbers and they made her salad special. Our waitress was awesome, she knew that my wife was allergic to cucumbers and let us know that the mango salsa for the orange roughy had cucumbers in it. She then offered my wife the option of lemon,butter,dill sauce which was an excellent choice . The sides were mashed potatoes and green beans. The green beans were the thin ones and done well and lightly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were homemade with lumps :-). The dessert was a chefs choice. I'm not sure what it was called. It was lemon (I'm not a fan of lemon), however it was light and surprisingly very very tasty. We all had a wonderful experience that we will remember for a long time. I was looking for fall foliage train rides. I wanted to experience a new fall adventure besides the haunted attractions, pumpkin patches, and corn mazes. I found Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad! It is 2 hours and 20 mins from where I live. It isn't that far of a drive. I purchased tickets for my parents and I. I went October 21st. The leaves were patchy at this time, but the view was still beautiful ! I enjoyed the view of the river. The river's colors are gorgeous! They have a cute little snack bar, and my mom and I got hot chocolate. If you are looking to experience a new outdoor adventure (inside a train ) I totally recommend doing this train ride! My only wish is that they expand their trips to beginning or mid November when the fall colors are really popping! read more

We bought the superior dining package. The food was excellent. My spouse had salmon and I had Cornish game hen. So good and plentiful...I couldn't finish it. However, the chairs were difficult to move (need wheels or gliders) and they sat extremely low to the floor; very difficult to get up. Although the food was great, the service was extremely slow and we had just been served our meals when they announced that we could go to the gondola. We were disappointed that we couldn't go because our food had just arrived. read more

Romney, West Virginia. This ad is deceiving. The train was cold, we were shivering and couldn't enjoy the "show." These are individual chairs, not like in an actual train. The walls were rusty, the decorations outdated, They advertised: "From caroling to milk and cookies, hot cocoa and cider." No hot cocoa, but cold chocolate milk in a carton and a "wrapped" Mrs. Claus' famous cookies. Not happy with the experience. Even the Christmas caroling sheets were recycled too many times. The sound system didn't help either. We were a group of 8 and all the kids were disappointed. I'm happy I didn't pay full price for this experience. read more

My 1 star review is specific to the North Pole Express. It was absolutely nothing like what was advertised online. I specifically chose this one to take my kids to because of all the stuff that was advertised that they did on the train. If I would've known it was going to be nothing like advertised I wouldn't of wasted the money, and would've went the cheaper route and took the Cass Christmas train ride! The actors that were dressed up acted like they didn't even wanna be there. There was no dancing, no singing. Just a plain train ride where we got a pre packaged cookie and a carton of milk. We rode on the train for The North Pole Express. I felt the cast lacked professionalism, as there were a lot of children and they acted embarrassed to be dressed up. It wasn't bad for my 20 month old, but I'm not sure older kids would be quite as impressed. My son really enjoyed the lights at "The North Pole," and I would hope further in December, there would be more houses decorated on the way to have more lights to look at while on the train. Santa was great and looked real! The barn outside of the train was also nice and decorated pretty. I honestly doubt I'd bring my son back to this when he is older. read more

My bride and I had an amazing day on the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad! I booked the last 9-hour trip of the season about a week out, and unfortunately there were no cave tours available. I expressed our desire to take the tour if someone cancelled to Ms. Ratliff (booking agent). Amazingly she also checked us in at the station. I repeated our request if anyone cancelled, to let us know. She said she would watch for us. About 90-minutes into the train ride an employee walked up to us and asked if we were the couple who wanted to take the cave tour as they had a last-minute cancellation. That is customer service. Ms. Ratliff made no promises, just that she would let us know. I am sorry someone cancelled, but was happy to take their place. We had so much fun and look forward to another trip next year because we're certain there are some sights we missed. If you enjoy travelling, seeing the beautiful sights and scenery of our gorgeous state, you need to take this trip. They offer shorter trips, but the day trip was worth the money. read more

We took the all-day trip with a layover in Petersburg, WV, and we had the Superior Dining package. The trip was fantastic! Beautiful scenery, the food service was great. The servers were very accommodating, attentive, and personable. There was a 3-hour layover in Petersburg, which allowed us more than enough time to explore the small downtown area (some walking is required). There was a bus that took paying customers to Smoke Hole Caverns during the layover, but we did not get that addition to ours since we have already been there multiple times. It is worth a trip there though if you haven't been. Train boarding and deboarding was quick and efficient. Train departed on time both times. Definitely worth the extra money to upgrade to premium or superior dining. We will be doing this again at some point. read more

My parents and I enjoyed our train ride. I'm sure it's fantastic when the leaves change color. The scenery is beautiful and I saw 4 Bald Eagles and a few nests. It was very exciting to see the eagles. Someone narrated the ride and pointed out in advance eagle sitings. We had food/snacks from the snack car and the were just fine, but a little pricey. To be honest, the Potomac Eagle scenic train ride is overrated. We saw better fall foliage and scenic views on our car ride to get on the train. It's a 1920s train, well maintained with clean glass windows that could be propped open halfway. But you have to like antique interiors. One good feature was that the seats could be turned around. The train conductors were pretty informative and friendly as well Was glad to support the WV economy by getting our group of 10 on this train ride, but would not recommend it as worth the money. read more
